Effects of inhalation of albuterol sulphate, ipratroprium bromide and frusemide on breathing mechanics and gas exchange in healthy exercising horses.

The possibility that pre-exercise inhalation of a bronchodilator by healthy horses could improve their mechanics of breathing and enhance performance was investigated. Ipratropium bromide (0.35 microg/kg bwt; n = 7) was administered by nebulisation 30 min before exercise and frusemide (1 mg/kg bwt; n = 6) was given in the same manner 2 h before exercise. Albuterol sulphate (360 and 720 microg; n = 7) were administered with a metered dose inhaler 2 h before exercise. Each drug was investigated independently of the others using cross-over protocols. Horses completed incremental exercise tests an

Effects of Heart Rate-Synchronized Breathing on Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Exercise Testing: A Preliminary Case Series.

Heart rate-synchronized breathing (HRSB) -- a technique in which the respiratory cycle is entrained to the cardiac cycle -- may optimize autonomic nervous function and ventilatory efficiency, potentially improving exercise tolerance. However, its effect on the anaerobic threshold (AT) remains unclear. This study examined the influence of HRSB on AT and related physiological indices during incremental cycle ergometry in healthy young adults. Three healthy male adults (mean age: 22.3 ± 1.2 years) underwent two cardiopulmonary exercise tests on separate days: Day 1 (normal breathing, control) and

Ticagrelor is associated with periodic breathing during exercise in coronary patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation: a retrospective observational study.

PURPOSE: Ticagrelor, a reversible P2Y12 inhibitor widely prescribed after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), induces dyspnoea and central sleep apnoea through effects on respiratory centre activity. During cardiac rehabilitation, we observed apparent ventilatory disturbances in patients receiving ticagrelor during cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET). This study aimed to evaluate whether ticagrelor significantly increases the risk of periodic breathing during exercise and whether this impairs functional or metabolic performance. METHODS: We performed a single-centre retrospective observational s

Sleep-related breathing disorder in a Japanese occupational population and its association with exercise-induced blood pressure elevation.

Sleep-related breathing disorder (SRBD) and exercise-induced blood pressure (BP) elevation are known risk factors for hypertension. However, the relation between them remains unknown. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between SRBD and exercise-induced BP elevation in a Japanese occupational population. Using the 3% oxygen desaturation index (3%ODI) obtained by a portable monitor for overnight saturation of percutaneous oxygen (SpO2), participants were classified into low (0 ≤ 3%ODI < 5), medium (5 ≤ 3%ODI < 15), and high (15 ≤ 3%ODI) 3%ODI groups. We included employees who h

A framework of transient hypercapnia to achieve an increased cerebral blood flow induced by nasal breathing during aerobic exercise.

During exercise, cerebral blood flow (CBF) is expected to only increase to a maximal volume up to a moderate intensity aerobic effort, suggesting that CBF is expected to decline past 70 % of a maximal aerobic effort. Increasing CBF during exercise permits an increased cerebral metabolic activity that stimulates neuroplasticity and other key processes of cerebral adaptations that ultimately improve cognitive health. Recent work has focused on utilizing gas-induced exposure to intermittent hypoxia during aerobic exercise to maximize the improvements in cognitive function compared to those seen u

Emotional Intelligence Training: Influence of a Brief Slow-Paced Breathing Exercise on Psychophysiological Variables Linked to Emotion Regulation.

Designing emotional intelligence training programs requires first testing the effectiveness of techniques targeting its main dimensions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a brief slow-paced breathing (SPB) exercise on psychophysiological variables linked to emotion regulation, namely cardiac vagal activity (CVA), as well as perceived stress intensity, emotional arousal, and emotional valence. A total of 61 participants completed a 5-min SPB exercise and a control condition of a 5-min rest measurement. CVA was indexed with the root mean square of successive differences (RM

Exercise during Short-Term and Long-Term Continuous Exposure to Hypoxia Exacerbates Sleep-Related Periodic Breathing.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Exposure to hypoxia elevates chemosensitivity, which can lead to periodic breathing. Exercise impacts gas exchange, altering chemosensitivity; however, interactions between sleep, exercise and chronic hypoxic exposure have not been examined. This study investigated whether exercise exacerbates sleep-related periodic breathing in hypoxia. METHODS: Two experimental phases. Short-Term Phase: a laboratory controlled, group-design study in which 16 active, healthy men (age: 25 ± 3 y, height: 1.79 ± 0.06 m, mass: 74 ± 8 kg) were confined to a normobaric hypoxic environment (FIO2 =

The effect of adding CO2 to hypoxic inspired gas on cerebral blood flow velocity and breathing during incremental exercise.

Hypoxia increases the ventilatory response to exercise, which leads to hyperventilation-induced hypocapnia and subsequent reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF). We studied the effects of adding CO2 to a hypoxic inspired gas on CBF during heavy exercise in an altitude naïve population. We hypothesized that augmented inspired CO2 and hypoxia would exert synergistic effects on increasing CBF during exercise, which would improve exercise capacity compared to hypocapnic hypoxia. We also examined the responsiveness of CO2 and O2 chemoreception on the regulation ventilation ([Formula: see text]E) du

Sleep-disordered breathing with nighttime hypocapnia relates to daytime enhanced ventilatory response to exercise in patients with heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) induces nighttime disturbance of arterial gases, such as carbon dioxide. However, it is still unclear whether nighttime SDB-related gas abnormality is related to respiratory dysregulation in daytime. Therefore, we examined the relationship between the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO(2)) at nighttime and the respiratory response to exercise in daytime. METHODS: Eighteen men (age, mean ± SD; 55 ± 11 years) with heart disease underwent multichannel respiratory monitoring through the night with transdermal measurement of PaCO(2) (PtcC

[Periodic breathing Cheyne-Stokes type, predict excessively reduced exercise tolerance in patients with chronic heart failure].

INTRODUCTION: Periodic breathing (PB) is evident during exercise in some patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and is accompanied by hyperventilation. AIM: To determine whether the presence of PB predicts excessive reduced exercise capacity in patients with severe CHF relative to patient with CHF of similar severity but with no PB. METHODS: Sixty-one CHF patients underwent cardiopulmonary exercise from 2009 to 2011 as part of their evaluation for cardiac transplantation. From this data, we selected patients in which the term "periodic breathing" appeared in their report. Matching patient

The difference in respiratory and blood gas values during recovery after exercise with spontaneous versus reduced breathing frequency.

Extrapolation from post-exercise measurements has been used to estimate respiratory and blood gas parameters during exercise. This may not be accurate in exercise with reduced breathing frequency (RBF), since spontaneous breathing usually follows exercise. This study was performed to ascertain whether measurement of oxygen saturation and blood gases immediately after exercise accurately reflected their values during exercise with RBF. Eight healthy male subjects performed an incremental cycling test with RBF at 10 breaths per minute. A constant load test with RBF (B10) was then performed to ex

Periodic breathing during incremental exercise predicts mortality in patients with chronic heart failure evaluated for cardiac transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that exercise-related periodic breathing (EPB) would be associated with poor prognosis in advanced chronic heart failure (CHF). BACKGROUND: Patients with CHF might present instability of the ventilatory control system characterized by cyclic waxing and waning of tidal volume (periodic breathing [PB]). This condition is associated with several deleterious circulatory and neuro-endocrine responses; in fact, PB in awake and asleep patients has been identified as an independent risk factor for cardiac death. During exercise, however, the prognostic value of PB is still

Role of carotid chemoreceptors in control of breathing at rest and in exercise: studies on human subjects with bilateral carotid body resection.

Control of ventilation at rest and in exercise was studied in subjects whose carotid bodies were bilaterally resected (BR) for the treatment of bronchial asthma some 30 years ago. Ventilatory activities of the carotid body were estimated to be responsible for about 90% and about 30% of the hypoxic and hypercapnic responses, respectively. The BR subjects still revealed a weak hypoxic chemosensitivity, called residual hypoxic response (RHR). The nature of RHR was discussed in detail. Exercise hyperpnea was found to be depressed in the BR subjects when compared with the subjects with similarly im
