Lacquer cracks in pathological myopia: a clinical review.

Lacquer cracks, described as breaks in the Bruch's membrane, are unique lesions in the spectrum of fundus changes associated with pathological myopia. Lacquer cracks are generally believed to be relatively innocuous lesions by themselves; however, progression to other features of myopic macular degeneration, such as patchy chorioretinal atrophy and choroidal neovascularization, may result in irreversible visual impairment. With the rising prevalence of pathological myopia to epidemic proportions, particularly in the Asian countries, ophthalmologists expect to encounter lacquer cracks more freq

Clinicopathologic features of surgically excised choroidal neovascular membranes.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is a descriptive correlation of the clinical, fluorescein angiographic, and pathologic features in a large series of patients who underwent surgical removal of choroidal neovascular membranes. METHODS: The patients' clinical data were recorded for each surgically removed choroidal neovascular membrane received in the authors' laboratory. Fluorescein angiographic characteristics of the membranes, including well-demarcated versus poorly demarcated preoperative appearance, postoperative choroidal atrophy, and membrane recurrence, were recorded whenever possible

Biomaterials used for tissue engineering of barrier-forming cell monolayers in the eye.

Cell monolayers that form a barrier between two structures play an important role for the maintenance of tissue functionality. In the anterior portion of the eye, the corneal endothelium forms a barrier that controls fluid exchange between the aqueous humor of the anterior chamber and the corneal stroma. This monolayer is central in the pathogenesis of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). FECD is a common corneal disease, in which corneal endothelial cells deposit extracellular matrix that increases the thickness of its basal membrane (Descemet's membrane), and forms excrescences (gutta

Optic Disc Measures in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Community-based Study of Middle-aged and Older Adults.

UNLABELLED: PRéCIS:: This study found an association between thinner superotemporal retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, the lack of association of sleep apnea with other disc measures does not support a link with glaucoma. AIM: Previous findings on the link between OSA and increased glaucoma risk have been inconsistent. In a community-based study of middle-aged and older adults, we explored for differences in optic disc measures that may resemble preclinical glaucomatous changes in relation to OSA status and severity. METHODS: A total of 865 participa

[Multidisciplinary management of patients affected with pseudoxanthoma elasticum].

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE, OMIM # 264800) is an autosomal recessive, multisystemic disorder, associated with mutations of the ABCC6 gene. Ectopic mineralization is in the background of the clinical manifestations of the disease. Calcium-salt crystals are deposited primarily in the skin, in the Bruch membrane of the eyes, and in the vascular endothelium. Thus, in addition to the skin lesions, visual impairment and cardiovascular involvement also occur. Clinical symptoms show varying severity and display heterogeneous appearance. The identification of the phenotype and care of the patients r

A long history of dense deposit disease.

BACKGROUND: Dense Deposit Disease is a rare condition affecting the Bruch's membrane and the glomerular basement membrane. We report the progression of the ocular manifestations over a 30 year follow up period, longer than any previous report. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44 year old male presented with pigmentary changes at the macula noted by his optician. Best corrected visual acuity at presentation was good in both eyes. Fundoscopy showed pigmentary changes and drusen, and investigation using intravenous fundus fluorescein angiography did not demonstrate any choroidal neovascular membrane. The pa

[Unusual coloboma of the optic disc?].

A twelve-year old girl presented herself for a routine ophthalmologic examination in our clinic. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 1.0 on both eyes. On funduscopic examination we saw a yellow round structure inferior to the optic nerve head. In optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination the structure showed cupping and opening of the Bruch membrane and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Visual field testing revealed an absolute scotoma right in the area were the abnormal coloboma was localized. We diagnosed a pseudo-doubling of the optic disk, which is a rare condition with just a few

Retinal Distribution and Extracellular Activity of Granzyme B: A Serine Protease That Degrades Retinal Pigment Epithelial Tight Junctions and Extracellular Matrix Proteins.

Granzymes are a family of serine proteases first shown to be intracellular initiators of immune-mediated cell death in target pathogenic cells. In addition to its intracellular role, Granzyme B (GzmB) has important extracellular functions in immune regulation and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation. Verified substrates of extracellular GzmB activity include tight junctional and ECM proteins. Interestingly, little is known about the activity of GzmB in the outer human retina, a tissue in which the degradation of the tight junctional contacts of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and with

Optic Nerve Sheath Melanoma Presenting as a Central Retinal Vein Occlusion.

A 64-year-old woman, with a history of diabetes and melanoma, developed a central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in her left eye. On exam, she had severe disc edema with retinal nerve fiber layer thickening, and anterior deformation of the peripapillary retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/Bruch membrane layer (ppRPE/BM) toward the vitreous on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) suggesting an optic nerve sheath (ONS) meningioma. Magnetic resonance imaging findings and ONS biopsy later confirmed a metastatic melanoma. This case demonstrates that the shape of the RPE/BM on SD-OCT ma

Choroid and Retinal Pigmented Epithelium in Pigs: A Comprehensive Light and Ultrastructural Study.

This study was conducted on 12 adult pigs of a local mixed breed to examine the histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the choroid and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). The tissues were fixed in Davidson's Fluid for light microscopy and Karnovsky's fluid for electron microscopy. Due to the physiological, anatomical and metabolic similarities between pigs and humans, pigs are a suitable animal model for various ophthalmic studies. Bruch's membrane exhibited five distinct layers: the basement membrane of the RPE, the inner collagenous layer, the elastic lamina, the outer collagenous l
