Integration of event experiences to build relational knowledge in the human brain.

We investigated how the human brain integrates experiences of specific events to build general knowledge about typical event structure. We examined an episodic memory area important for temporal relations, anterior-lateral entorhinal cortex, and a semantic memory area important for action concepts, middle temporal gyrus, to understand how and when these areas contribute to these processes. Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while learning and recalling temporal relations among novel events over two sessions 1 week apart. Across distinct contexts, individual temporal r

Seroprevalence and GIS-supported risk factor analysis of Fasciola hepatica infections in dairy herds in Germany.

A total of 20 749 bulk tank milk (BTM) samples was collected in November 2008 from all over Germany, corresponding to 20.9% of all German dairy herds. The BTM samples were analysed for antibodies against Fasciola hepatica using the excretory-secretory (ES) ELISA. A geospatial map was drawn to show herd prevalences per postal code area. Various spatial risk factors were tested for potential statistical associations with the ELISA results in logistic regression supported by a geographical information system (GIS). The mean seroprevalence was 23.6% and prevalences in different German federal stat

A Navigation and Augmented Reality System for Visually Impaired People.

In recent years, we have assisted with an impressive advance in augmented reality systems and computer vision algorithms, based on image processing and artificial intelligence. Thanks to these technologies, mainstream smartphones are able to estimate their own motion in 3D space with high accuracy. In this paper, we exploit such technologies to support the autonomous mobility of people with visual disabilities, identifying pre-defined virtual paths and providing context information, reducing the distance between the digital and real worlds. In particular, we present ARIANNA+, an extension of A

Partnering with parents in interprofessional leadership graduate education to promote family-professional partnerships.

Evidence supports the benefits to families of relationships with professionals that build on the concept of partnership, but there are few studies in the literature of strategies involving joint education for parents and professionals to enhance the capacity of parents of children with special healthcare needs to be effective interprofessional partners. Since 2007, parents of children with special healthcare needs have participated alongside graduate students from five different profession-based training programmes in a structured interprofessional leadership programme. The aims of this summat

Characterizing the Details of Spatial Construction: Cognitive Constraints and Variability.

Spatial construction-the activity of creating novel spatial arrangements or copying existing ones-is a hallmark of human spatial cognition. Spatial construction abilities predict math and other academic outcomes and are regularly used in IQ testing, but we know little about the cognitive processes that underlie them. In part, this lack of understanding is due to both the complex nature of construction tasks and the tendency to limit measurement to the overall accuracy of the end goal. Using an automated recording and coding system, we examined in detail adults' performance on a block copying t

Identifying clinical/translational research cohorts: ascertainment via querying an integrated multi-source database.

BACKGROUND: Ascertainment of potential subjects has been a longstanding problem in clinical research. Various methods have been proposed, including using data in electronic health records. However, these methods typically suffer from scaling effects-some methods work well for large cohorts; others work for small cohorts only. OBJECTIVE: We propose a method that provides a simple identification of pre-research cohorts and relies on data available in most states in the USA: merged public health data sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Utah Population Database Limited query tool allows users to

Advancing Discussions Using a Video-Based Support Tool About End-of-Life Care (ADVISE): Protocol for a Single-Center Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: More than 950,000 adults over 65 years of age are hospitalized each year after injury. Recommended care for this vulnerable group includes discussion of their goals for life-sustaining care ("code status") upon admission, but most older patients do not participate in adequate code status discussions. Randomized trials have demonstrated that video-based interventions are associated with better patient knowledge and improved alignment of patient preferences for life-sustaining treatment; however, there are limited data on the effectiveness of these interventions in acutely injured pa

Evaluation of a Telesimulation Program to Support Psychosocial Communication Training for Neonatology Fellows.

Parents of infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) frequently experience significant emotional distress, yet neonatology fellows receive limited training in psychosocial support. This study evaluates the use of online standardized-patient simulation to improve fellows' communication skills addressing parent concerns. Fellows (n = 13) completed two virtual interactions with standardized parents, with feedback from a neonatal mental health professional (NMHP), a former NICU parent, and a neonatologist using narrative comments and the Gap-Kalamazoo Communication Skills Assessment Scale

Engaging Medical Students in Curriculum Design: Evaluating a Model for Active Participation and Co-Creation of an Elective Course Curriculum.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging medical students in curriculum design provides numerous advantages, fostering a more effective, student-centered learning experience. As the primary "consumers" of the curriculum, students have a unique perspective on its strengths and areas for improvement. The integration of elective courses into medical curricula yields many advantages for medical students. This study aimed at evaluating learners' involvement in the curriculum design process of an elective course by exploring their perceptions. METHODS: A total of 277 final-year medical students, in a single institut

FMReward: Aligning and Evaluating Audio-Driven 3D Facial Animation with Human Preferences.

Audio-driven 3D facial animation is essential for advancing immersion and interactivity in virtual experiences. Although recent advances have shown promising capabilities, the training and evaluation of existing methods typically rely on ground-truth-based errors, which fall short of aligning with human preferences. To address this, we present a comprehensive framework that learns an automatic perceptual model from human preference data and leverages it to improve and evaluate the perceptual quality of audio-driven 3D facial animation. To begin with, we construct FMPair (Facial Motion Pairwise
