Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease of public health significance. In view of its elimination as a public health problem by 2030, adopting a One Health approach is necessary, considering its multidimensional nature. Animal reservoirs, in particular, pose a significant threat to schistosomiasis control in Africa and beyond. In this study, we conducted a spatio-temporal survey of Schistosoma infections in small mammal communities and intermediate snail hosts in the vicinity of Lake Guiers in northern Senegal. Sampling campaigns were undertaken four times between April 2021 and August

The pattern of transmission of human schistosomiasis was studied in Amagunze Village, eastern Nigeria, during 1986-1987. The prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium in 119 schoolboys aged 5-12 years was 79%. The geometric mean of intensity of infection was 49 eggs/10 ml urine and the frequency of visible haematuria was 25.2%. No S. mansoni infections were demonstrated. A marked seasonality in population density of Bulinus truncatus, B. forskalii and Biomphalaria pfeifferi was demonstrated with reduced densities during the late rainy and early dry seasons. Schistosoma sp. infected B. truncatus we

Surveys for schistosomiasis of 2498 people of various ages from 22 villages in northeast Zimbabwe are reported. A high prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium (53.1%) and a medium prevalence of S. mansoni (17.5%) were found. Schistosoma haematobium prevalence among males was significantly higher than among females. Age prevalence curves for both schistosome species showed a typical pattern with the peak in the ten to 20 years age group, which is also the age group with the highest potential of contaminating water with excreta. Snail surveys at 12 local sites showed the presence of Bulinus globos

A cross-sectional survey for Schistosoma haematobium infection in 5,998 individuals, representing 31,803 persons in six rural villages of the Qena governorate, Upper Egypt, was completed. There were 2,223 persons (37.1%) excreting S. haematobium eggs identified by the nuclepore membrane filtration technique of a single urine specimen. Prevalence of infection ranged from 23.9% to 64.0% among the six villages. Quantitatively the overall geometric mean egg-count was 48.1 eggs/10 ml urine. A survey of proximal canals was conducted and 9 of 4,312 Bulinus snails were infected with schistosomes (0.21

The most frequently encountered human bilharziasis, urinary Schistosoma haematobium schistosomiasis, is endemic in Africa and western Asia: 51 countries are concerned. Humans are infected by contact with water harboring snails of the genus Bulinus that emit furcocercous cercariae. Older children eliminate large quantities of schistosoma eggs in urine. CLINICALLY: Schistosoma haematobium lives in the adult form in the bladder plexus, emitting eggs into the urine. Hematuria and signs of upper urinary tract dilatation are the most frequent clinical manifestations. There has been no data substanti

The potential role of 3 species of Bulinus in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in Saudi Arabia was assessed on the basis of their susceptibility to experimental infection, their geographical distribution and numbers, and the type of habitats in which they were found. B. truncatus, distributed mainly in the mid- and south-western regions, showed extremely low susceptibility to strains of S. haematobium from Yemen, Egypt and Sudan. The same species from one area in the north-west was refractory to a strain of the parasite from Yemen. In contrast, B. wrighti was very susceptible to inf

BACKGROUND: The planorbid freshwater snails of the two genera, Biomphalaria and Bulinus -have been vigorously studied due to the role they play as intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis. In Sudan specifically, most studies have focused on the chemical and ecological control of the two genera, but few studies have looked at their biological control. This study explored the coexistence of other species of freshwater snails and the two genera along with their trematode infections in relation to a number of environmental factors in the East Nile locality, Khartoum state, Sudan.
METHODS: Freshwater

We aimed to explore the population dynamics of snail in 3 sites of the White Nile in Sudan. More specifically, we aimed to investigate the annual patterns of snail populations that act as intermediate hosts of schistosomes and monthly snail infection rates and ecological characteristics presumably related to snail populations. We collected snails for 1 year monthly at 3 different shore sites in the vicinity of El Shajara along the White Nile river in Khartoum State, Sudan. In addition, we measured air and water temperatures, water turbidities, vegetation coverages, and water depths and current

The water bug, Sphaerodema urinator (Hemiptera : Belostomatidae), shares the same habitat of the freshwater snails in ponds, lakes, and streams. Studies conducted in lakes show that fish and crayfish predators play an important role in determining the abundance of freshwater snails. In contrast, shallow ponds and marches often lack fish and crayfish but have abundant insect predators. This study has been carried out to evaluate the predatory potential of S. urinator adult on two freshwater snails that serves as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma. Laboratory evaluation of predation by S. urinato

The relationship between schistosomes and their intermediate hosts is an extremely intricate one with strains and species of the parasite depending on particular species of snail, which in turn may vary in their susceptibility to the parasites. In order to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology of the disease we have been investigating the use of molecular markers for snail identification and for studying host-parasite relationships. In this paper we will draw on examples concerning schistosomiasis in West and East Africa to illustrate how a molecular analysis can be used as part of a

Seasonal density fluctuations of Bulinus nasutus populations with accompanying Schistosoma haematobium infection rates in relation to rainfall and habitat water volumes were studied at Ukiriguru, Mwanza, Tanzania. Alongside the snail investigations, 50 school children initially negative for urinary schistosomiasis were examined regularly to determine seasonal incidence rates for the infection. Of the 17,646 B. nasutus collected in 2 years, 156 (0.88%) were found shedding cercariae. Snail populations fluctuated seasonally as influenced by rainfall through its effects on habitat water volume. Mo

Located in an area where Schistosoma haematobium is hyperendemic, the town of Niamey is a focus of hypoendemicity. The aim of the malacological follow-up studies undertaken over a one year period was the determination of the mollusc species present in the water bodies, the appreciation of their space-time distribution of the snail and to find out the potential seasons of transmission. The investigation applied to 22 sites of transmission in the urban community. Four molluscs species (Bulinus truncatus, B. forskalii, B. globosus and B. senegalensis) are collected. The first three species are pr

A major factor in the geographical distribution of endemic schistosomiasis in Kenya is the discontinuous distribution of intermediate hosts. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is the main transmitter of S. mansoni and is found in the altitude zone 300-2,300 m; its absence from the costal region results in the absence of endemic schistosomiasis mansoni amongst the large human population in the coastal region. Snails belonging to the Bulinus africanus group appear to be responsible for all transmission of S. haematobium; they occur from near sea-level to an altitude of about 1,800 but are discontinuously di

The efficacy of leeches, as biological agents, in control of snail intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis (Bulinus truncatus, Biomphalaria alexandrina) and fascioliasis (Lymnaea natalensis) as well as their effect on the non-target snails Physa acuta, Melanioides tuberculata and Cleopatra bulimoides was evaluated. Two glossiphoniid snail leeches, Helobdella nilae and Alboglossiphonia conjugata were used. They destroyed egg masses and young snails more rapidly than adult ones. H. nilae showed a stronger destructive effect than A. conjugata. In a descending order, it preferred L. natalensis follo

A preliminary parasitological and malacological survey was effected in rural communities of some Local Government Areas (LGA) in Plateau State, Nigeria, to estimate the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis and identify active transmission foci. Out of 2888 persons examined in six LGAs, 1381 (47.82%) were excreting eggs of Schistosoma haematobium in their urine. Prevalence rates did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) between the LGAs: Pankshin (62.4%), Shendam (40.2%), Qua'an-Pan (22.9%), Langtang South (45.4%), Langtang North (58.8%) and Wase (50.0%). Infection rates were significantly differe

Experimental studies of mating behaviour of Schistosoma intercalatum and Schistosoma mansoni in mixed infections in mice showed that in simultaneous infections, without the possibility of choice of mate, heterologous pairing occurs readily. The paired females reach sexual maturity, are inseminated and lay parthenogenetic eggs. Miracidia originating from the S. mansoni male x S. intercalatum female are non infective to either Biomphalaria glabrata or Bulinus forskalii, whereas those from the reverse cross show a very low infectivity to only B. glabrata. The resulting haploid male cercariae also

We analyzed temporal changes in spatial patterns of active Schistosoma haematobium infection in different age groups and associated them with ponds infested with Bulinus snails. A major drought between 2001 and 2009 resulted in drying of ponds that were known sources of infection, and we detected very few or no snails in ponds that were infested in the past. The household-level spatial pattern of infection for children of various age groups in 2009 was contrasted with historical data from 2000. The significant local clustering of high- and low-infection levels among school-aged children that o

The present study describes the action of the latex of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (E. milli) on species of the genus Bulinus and on Biomphalaria pfeifferi, intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in Africa, and the Brazilian snails B. glabrata, B. tenagophila, and B. straminea, intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in Brazil. The impact of the latex on the egg masses and embryos of B. glabrata was also evaluated. Using the standardized methodology of the World Health Organization for testing plant-derived molluscicides, we obtained a 90% lethal dose (LD90) ranging from 0.13 ppm for B. gla

A schistosomiasis prevalence survey was carried out at Lake Kariba, Zambia--only the second since the creation of the lake more than 30 years ago. In the 20 or so years since the first study the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni has increased from 16% to 56% while that of S. haematobium has dropped from 69% to 17%. There was variability in the infectivity of contact sites (P < 0.001) and this had an impact on prevalence. In contrast, sex, age (within the range 5-19 years), residential area (distance from the lakeshore) and activity at the contact site had no significant effect on prevalence (P

During studies on schistosomiasis in Saudi Arabia, urine and stool samples from inhabitants of various areas (mostly rural) were examined, and 97 aquatic habitats in 46 localities were searched for snails. The results indicate the occurrence of both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in most parts of the country, with a patchy distribution and varying infection rates. The snail intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni was found to be Biomphalaria arabica. For S. haematobium three species of snails, namely, Bulinus truncatus and B. beccarii in the west and B. reticulatus wrighti in the nort
