A case of dwarfism in 6th century Italy: Bioarchaeological assessment of a hereditary disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The skeletal remains of a short-statured individual (T17) are described and a differential diagnosis performed to determine the etiology of the condition. MATERIALS: An individual considered pathologically short in stature was discovered in the burial site of Piazza XX Settembre, Modena (northern Italy). METHODS: Morphological and morphometric analyses were performed, and T17 was compared to dwarfs from other localities and periods and to the adult female population from the same site. A paleopathological survey was undertaken to assess the degree of the skeletal elements of T17 w

Manifestation of infantile scurvy in a skeleton from the high medieval village of Trutmanice (South Moravia, Czech Republic).

The study describes the pathological findings recorded on the human remains of a 3 to 4-year-old child found in the burial site of Trutmanice (Czech Republic), dated to the 13th-15th century. The human remains were examined using standard macroscopic osteological and paleopathological methods, supplemented by radiographic examination. Although the preservation of the bones limited the analysis, multiple pathological changes were observed mainly on the skull: cribra orbitalia, small pores and fine deposits of newly formed bone tissue, hypertrophic diploë, grooves indicating rich branching of me

Evidence of behaviour change during an Ebola virus disease outbreak, Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in Ebola-related knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices during the Sierra Leone outbreak between 2014 and 2015. METHODS: Four cluster surveys were conducted: two before the outbreak peak (3499 participants) and two after (7104 participants). We assessed the effect of temporal and geographical factors on 16 knowledge, attitude and practice outcomes. FINDINGS: Fourteen of 16 knowledge, attitude and prevention practice outcomes improved across all regions from before to after the outbreak peak. The proportion of respondents willing to: (i) welcome Ebola sur

Super-Cooling Point and Effects of Temperature, Moisture, and Habitat on Overwintering Survival of the Threatened American Burying Beetle Nicrophorus americanus.

Most species within the genus Nicrophorus (Staphylinidae: Silphinae: Necrophorini) overwinter as adults during cold months. However, species that were once widely distributed, such as the American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, experience different overwintering conditions, altered by increasing climate variability, making cold periods less predictable. In this study, we determined the mean super-cooling point of Oklahoma N. americanus to be -1.98 °C, a value that suggests that beetles rely on behavioral avoidance of freezing soils rather than on physiological freeze tolerance

Differential diagnosis of a calcified object from the South Tombs Cemetery at Amarna, Egypt.

OBJECTIVE: This paper provides a brief history of the publication of calcified biological objects and presents one that was present in the grave associated with a mature adult female buried in the South Tombs Cemetery at Amarna, Egypt (c. 1353-1332BCE). METHODS: Macroscopic examination revealed an ovoid object constructed of concentric layers of a coarse sand-like material oriented around a dense core that lacked evidence of parasites. Microscopic examination revealed the object is composed of densely, yet haphazardly packed, elongated octahedron shaped crystals with no evidence of cellular s

Surgical Outcomes Following Gender Affirming Penile Reconstruction: Patient-Reported Outcomes From a Multi-Center, International Survey of 129 Transmasculine Patients.

BACKGROUND: Current literature on surgical outcomes after gender affirming genital surgery is limited by small sample sizes from single-center studies. AIM: To use a community-based participatory research model to survey a large, heterogeneous cohort of transmasculine patients on phalloplasty and metoidioplasty outcomes. METHODS: A peer-informed survey of transmasculine peoples' experience was constructed and administered between January and April 2020. Data collected included demographics, genital surgery history, pre- and postoperative genital sensation and function, and genital self-image

Virtuality VS Reality: Testing a virtual approach for the exploratory analysis of Bronze Age urns from Northern Italy.

Cremation is among the most destructive funerary practices. Over the past 30 years, radiographic imaging has increasingly been used to non-destructively extract information from cremation burials. Advances in scanners and imaging software have enhanced the quality of data retrievable through this method. However, scanning cremated remains, particularly when urned, presents challenges due to their fragility, size, material density overlaps, and the high cost of imaging equipment. These factors often result in low-quality images where distinguishing different materials becomes difficult and time

Ankylosing spondylitis: antiquity and differential diagnosis - a case study of a Bronze Age skeleton from Norabak, southeastern Armenia.

An excavation of a burial mound at Norabak site (Southeast Armenia) unearthed four burial chambers, the central one contained a single skeleton radiocarbon dated to about 1400-1200 BCE. The skeleton was observed to have a polyarticular erosive arthropathy, primarily affecting the spine, with diagnostic features of ankylosing spondylitis. The antiquity of ankylosing spondylitis is questioned in the literature, because there are few reliable and descriptive reports from prehistoric sites. Excellent preservation of the skeleton from Norabak made it possible to perform a detailed analysis of the p

Yersinia pestis genomes reveal plague in Britain 4000 years ago.

Extinct lineages of Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of the plague, have been identified in several individuals from Eurasia between 5000 and 2500 years before present (BP). One of these, termed the 'LNBA lineage' (Late Neolithic and Bronze Age), has been suggested to have spread into Europe with human groups expanding from the Eurasian steppe. Here, we show that the LNBA plague was spread to Europe's northwestern periphery by sequencing three Yersinia pestis genomes from Britain, all dating to ~4000 cal BP. Two individuals were from an unusual mass burial context in Charterhouse Warren, S

Use of a nationwide call center for Ebola response and monitoring during a 3-day house-to-house campaign - Sierra Leone, September 2014.

During May 23, 2014-January 10, 2015, Sierra Leone reported 7,777 confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease (Ebola). In response to the epidemic, on August 5, Sierra Leone's Emergency Operations Center established a toll-free, nationwide Ebola call center. The purpose of the call center is to encourage public reporting of possible Ebola cases and deaths to public health officials and to provide health education about Ebola to callers. This information also functions as an "alert" system for public health officials and supports surveillance efforts for the response. National call center dispatcher

Theory and classification of mass extinction causation.

Theory regarding the causation of mass extinctions is in need of systematization, which is the focus of this contribution. Every mass extinction has both an ultimate cause, i.e. the trigger that leads to various climato-environmental changes, and one or more proximate cause(s), i.e. the specific climato-environmental changes that result in elevated biotic mortality. With regard to ultimate causes, strong cases can be made that bolide (i.e. meteor) impacts, large igneous province (LIP) eruptions and bioevolutionary events have each triggered one or more of the Phanerozoic Big Five mass extincti

Diagenesis as the main control of clayrock brittleness.

Geological storage is expected to play an important role in the energy transition, in various forms spanning across CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste storage to that of short-term energy (H2 or compressed air energy storage, CAES). The efficiency of geological storage relies on the low permeability of clayrocks, whose integrity might be compromised if they exhibit brittle behavior. Therefore, identifying the geological conditions that lead to brittleness is essential to guide storage projects toward the safest options. Here, we show that diagenesis is the main control on clayrock brittleness

Taphonomic patterns of a WWI Alpine mass grave: insights from the Italian front.

Understanding taphonomic patterns on skeletal remains, along with associated entomological evidence, remains a critical challenge in forensic and archaeological investigations. This study examines the specific impact of an Alpine environment on a WWI mass grave of 12 Austro-Hungarian soldiers (Cima Cady, Italy). Alongside general poor preservation caused by acidic soil erosion, a distinctive reddish staining affected over 80% of the skeletal elements. This was linked to the invasive root system of Juniperus sp., a plant species typical of Alpine zones, which had penetrated the grave and bone c

The first known use of vermillion.

Vermillion has been shown to be useful in preserving human bones from 5000 years ago. Remarkably well-preserved human bones have been found in the dolmenic burial 'La Velilla' in Osorno (Palencia, Spain), carefully covered by pulverized cinnabar (vermillion) which ensured their preservation even in non-favorable climatic conditions. We believe the red powder was deliberately deposited for preservative use because no cinnabar mine is to be found within 160 km, because of the large amount (hundreds of kilograms) used, and because its composition, red mercuric sulphide, is similar to that of prep

A case study comparing the detection ability of cadaver detection dogs and electronic nose technology to a clandestine grave.

Cadaver detection dogs (CDDs) are one of the best tools to locate clandestinely buried human remains. However, large data gaps exist in what VOC classes and concentrations are targeted by CDDs for detection. This study compared the alert responses produced by CDDs used by the New South Wales Police Force to responses generated by an electronic nose (named the NOS.E) with metal oxide sensors to a clandestine burial. For confirmatory analysis, VOC samples of the clandestine burial were taken, and compounds were identified using GC × GC-TOFMS. While statistical work was limited due to sample size
