Biobutanol production from rice straw using a redox-modulated fungal-bacterial consortium: Transcriptional regulation and process integration.

Producing butanol from lignocellulosic biomass is a key strategy for addressing climate change and the energy crisis. Consolidated bioprocess (CBP), which combines enzyme production, hydrolysis, and fermentation into a single step, offers an effective way to lower the production costs of biobutanol. Despite the crucial role of fungi in cellulolytic decomposition, developing efficient fungal-bacterial consortia for butanol production remains challenging due to the fundamental conflict between the aerobic nature of fungi and the strict anaerobicity of solventogenic clostridia. In this study, a m

Supramolecular organogel formation through three-dimensional α-cyclodextrin nanostructures: solvent chirality-selective organogel formation.

Novel supramolecular organogels were efficiently formed by mixing a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) solution of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) with 1- or 2-butanol via the formation of three-dimensional hexagonal nanostructures composed of head-to-tail α-CD channel assemblies. Mixing (R)- and (S)-2-butanol with an α-CD/HFIP solution realized (S)-2-butanol-selective organogel formation.

The frequency of ethanol, higher alcohols and other low molecular weight volatiles in postmortem blood samples from unnatural deaths.

The determination of various volatiles in postmortem blood samples has been reported in many previous studies. The presence of some of them in postmortem specimens reflects microbial activity in the sample while others are detected mainly after consumption of alcoholic beverages or due to antemortem metabolic processes. This contribution aims to determine in 1954 postmortem blood samples, from respective number of unnatural deaths autopsy cases, the frequency of detection of some common volatile compounds, including acetaldehyde, acetone, 2-propanol, ethyl acetate, methanol, as well as, the hi

A Thermoanaerobacter ethanolicus secondary alcohol dehydrogenase mutant derivative highly active and stereoselective on phenylacetone and benzylacetone.

The secondary alcohol dehydrogenase from Thermoanaerobacter ethanolicus 39E (TeSADH) is highly thermostable and solvent-stable, and it is active on a broad range of substrates. These properties make TeSADH an excellent template to engineer an industrial catalyst for chiral chemical synthesis. (S)-1-Phenyl-2-propanol was our target product because it is a precursor to major pharmaceuticals containing secondary alcohol groups. TeSADH has no detectable activity on this alcohol, but it is highly active on 2-butanol. The structural model we used to plan our mutagenesis strategy was based on the sub

Influence of hydroxyl group position and temperature on thermophysical properties of tetraalkylammonium hydroxide ionic liquids with alcohols.

In this work, we have explored the thermophysical properties of tetraalkylammonium hydroxide ionic liquids (ILs) such as tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAH) and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) with isomers of butanol (1-butanol, 2-butanol and 2-methyl-2-propanol) within the temperature range 293.15-313.15 K, with interval of 5 K and over the varied concentration range of ILs. The molecular interactions between ILs and butanol isomers are essential for understanding the function of ILs in related measures and excess functions are sensitive probe for the molecular interactions. Therefore, w

Chiral separations in microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography. Use of micelle polymers and microemulsion polymers.

In this study, microemulsions of the chiral surfactant polysodium N-undecenoyl-D-valinate (poly-D-SUV) was utilized for enantiomeric separation by investigating two approaches using polymeric chiral surfactant in microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC). In the first approach, poly-D-SUV was used as an emulsifier surfactant along with 1-butanol and n-heptane. Enantioseparation of anionic or partially anionic binaphthyl derivatives, anionic barbiturates, and cationic paveroline derivatives were achieved by varying the mass fraction of 1-butanol, n-heptane and poly-D-SUV. Cosolvents as Liquid Surfactants for Boron Nitride Nanosheet (BNNS) Dispersions.

Despite a range of promising applications, liquid-phase exfoliation of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) is limited, both by low yield in common solvents as well as the disadvantages of using dissolved surfactants. One recently reported approach is the use of cosolvent systems to increase the as-obtained concentration of BNNS; the role of these solvents in aiding exfoliation and/or aiding colloidal stability of BNNSs is difficult to distinguish. In this paper, we have investigated the use of a t-butanol/water cosolvent to disperse BNNSs. We utilize solvent-exchange experiments to demonstrate th

Cluster Structure and Ordering in the Nucleation and Growth of Binary Molecular Mixtures.

A complete understanding of aerosol formation remains elusive due to the microscopic scale and transient occurrence of nucleation. This process is further complicated by the multicomponent nature of atmospheric nucleating systems in which the properties of conucleating compounds influence the affinity of molecules to cluster. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate homogeneous vapor-liquid nucleation and growth of six binary mixtures composed of water, n-nonane, 1-butanol, and methanol. Structural analyses were performed to understand the dynamic configurations generated f

Effects of chronic treatment with ethanol on the development of cross-tolerance to other alcohols and pentobarbital.

The development of cross-tolerance to various alcohols and pentobarbital was examined in ethanol (EtOH)-treated mice. Chronic EtOH treatment (dosage rising in steps from 3.5-4.5 g/kg i.p. daily during a 23-day period) produced tolerance to its hypnotic effect. Such tolerance was seen as a reduction in the duration of loss of righting reflex (LRR), as well as higher blood EtOH levels at the offset of LRR, in EtOH-treated mice as compared to saline-treated controls. Cross-tolerance was shown by shifts in dose-response curves for the LRR induced by n-propanol and t-butanol. Such treatment, howeve

Activity of mushroom tyrosinase on catechol and on a catechol estrogen in an organic solvent.

A suspension of tyrosinase-coated glass beads in butanol effectively oxidizes catechol substrate. The enzyme is not soluble in the organic solvent and activity can be stopped by removal of the solid state enzyme after low-speed centrifugation or decantation. The product was assayed by HPLC and by its reactivity towards Besthorn's reagent, which gave a reaction typical for o-quinones. Addition of water to the extent of 0.5 to 4% raised the rate of substrate utilization but the accumulation of quinone first increased and then began to decrease. It is suggested that the product in dry butanol is
