Optimizing butorphanol-dexmedetomidine dosing for managing catheter-related bladder discomfort post-anesthesia: a randomized trial.

Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD) during anesthesia recovery increases postoperative risks and healthcare burden. This single-center randomised controlled trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of three regimens: DSF (dexmedetomidine 0.2 µg/kg plus sufentanil 0.1 µg/kg), DLB (dexmedetomidine 0.2 µg/kg plus butorphanol 10 µg/kg), and DHB (dexmedetomidine 0.2 µg/kg plus butorphanol 20 µg/kg), for managing moderate-to-severe CRBD in 102 adult patients. Primary outcomes measured CRBD severity scores and response rates (score of ≤ 1), while secondary outcomes assessed haemodynamic stabili

Intranasal sedation with diazepam-butorphanol in yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis): a preliminary clinical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) are frequently presented to wildlife clinics, often requiring safe and effective sedation and analgesia for diagnostic procedures. Minimising stress and restraint during handling are critical for both animal welfare and staff safety. To address this need, this study evaluates the first intranasal protocol in gulls, aiming to facilitate routine examination and diagnostic imaging without physical restraint. A total of 16 gulls were included in this prospective, preliminary clinical evaluation. A combination of diazepam (8 mg/kg) and butorphanol

Dual-route medetomidine-alfaxalone-butorphanol anesthesia: a refined protocol for balanced anesthesia in male rabbits.

Injectable anesthesia is widely used in laboratory animals because of its ease of administration and minimal equipment requirements. However, it necessitates careful monitoring as well as thermal and oxygen support. This study evaluated the efficacy of medetomidine-alfaxalone-butorphanol (MAB) anesthesia in male rabbits using a dual-route administration protocol. The anesthetic doses were as follows: medetomidine, 0.2 mg/kg; alfaxalone, 2.0 mg/kg; and butorphanol, 2.0 mg/kg. MAB anesthesia, administered via intravenous and subcutaneous routes, induced rapid and smooth induction, achieving anes

Butorphanol with oxygen insufflation corrects etorphine-induced hypoxaemia in chemically immobilized white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced immobilization is associated with severe respiratory depression in the white rhinoceros. We evaluated the efficacy of butorphanol and oxygen insufflation in alleviating opioid-induced respiratory depression in eight boma-managed rhinoceros. RESULTS: Chemical immobilization with etorphine, azaperone and hyaluronidase, as per standard procedure for the white rhinoceros, caused severe respiratory depression with hypoxaemia (PaO2 = 27 ± 7 mmHg [mean ± SD]), hypercapnia (PaCO2 = 82 ± 6 mmHg) and acidosis (pH =7.26 ± 0.02) in the control trial at 5 min. Butorphanol decreased the median effective concentration of ropivacaine in ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block.

BACKGROUND: Combining butorphanol with local anesthesia can enhance the analgesic effect of local anesthesia and prolong the duration of action for nerve block anesthesia. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of butorphanol on the median effective concentration (EC50) of ropivacaine in ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB). METHODS: This is a randomized, double-blind, up-and-down sequential allocation study. Fifty patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to the ropivacaine group or the butorphanol group

Butorphanol pre-treatment prevents myoclonus induced by etomidate: a randomised, double-blind, controlled clinical trial.

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: Myoclonic movements are common problems during induction of anaesthesia with etomidate. The myoclonus occurring after etomidate administration may represent a form of seizure. Agonistic modulation of the κ opiate receptor may reduce seizures, and butorphanol acts in such a manner. The aim of this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was to test our hypothesis that pre-treatment with butorphanol might reduce the incidence and severity of myoclonus induced by etomidate. METHODS: Patients (108) with American Society of Anaesthesiologists physical sta

Mu- and delta-opioid receptor antagonists precipitate similar withdrawal phenomena in butorphanol and morphine dependence.

The relative involvement of mu- and delta-opioid receptors in the mediation of butorphanol-, as compared to morphine-, dependence was examined with the use of highly selective antagonists at mu- and delta-opioid receptors. Extracellular fluid levels of glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp) were measured within the pontine locus coeruleus following precipitation of withdrawal from dependence on either butorphanol or morphine in conscious Sprague-Dawley rats. Dependence was induced by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) infusion of butorphanol (26 nmol/mu l/h), morphine (26 nmol/mu l/h) or saline veh

KETAMINE, MEDETOMIDINE, AND MIDAZOLAM ANESTHESIA WITH AND WITHOUT BUTORPHANOL IN SLOW LORISES (NYCTICEBUS BENGALENSIS AND XANTHONYCTICEBUS SPECIES).

Slow lorises (Nycticebus bengalensis and Xanthonycticebus spp.) are endangered small nocturnal prosimians that are frequently rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia. Routine health examinations under anesthesia are essential for their care but anesthetic protocols are based largely on protocols established for other prosimians, with limited species-specific data. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of adding butorphanol to a ketamine (6 mg/kg IM)-medetomidine (0.05 mg/kg IM)-midazolam (0.15 mg/kg IM) (KMM) anesthetic combination (KMMB) during health examinations of

The effect of sedation with a combination of butorphanol and midazolam on quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasonography of duodenum in healthy dogs.

Quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) enables non-invasive and objective evaluation of intestinal perfusion by quantifying the intensity of enhancement on the intestine after microbubble contrast administration. During CEUS scanning, sedation is sometimes necessary to maintain animal cooperation. Nevertheless, the effect of sedative administration on the canine intestinal CEUS is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sedation with a combination of butorphanol and midazolam on the duodenal CEUS-derived perfusion parameters of healthy dogs. For this purpose, duod

Effects of a mixture of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol on anesthesia and blood biochemistry and the antagonizing action of atipamezole in hamsters.

Syrian golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) are useful laboratory rodents for studying human infectious diseases, metabolic diseases and cancer. In other rodents, such as mice and rats, a mixture of medetomidine, midazolam and butorphanol functions as a useful anesthetic, although it alters some blood biochemical parameters. In this study, we examined the effects of this mixture on anesthesia and blood biochemical parameters, and the action of atipamezole, a medetomidine antagonist, in hamsters.
