Poly[bis-[μ(2)-2-(2-pyridylmethyl-amino)ethanesulfonato]cadmium(II)].

The title compound [Cd(C(8)H(11)N(2)O(3)S)(2)](n), is a two-dimensional coordination polymer based on a Cd(2+) atom and deprotonated 2-(2-pyridylmethyl-amino)ethanesulfonic acid (Hpmt). The complex has mol-ecular symmetry C(i) as a consequence of the Cd(II) being located on an inversion centre. Two N atoms of each pmt(-) ligand coordinate to the Cd(2+) ion and its sulfonate O atom bonds to an adjacent Cd(2+) ion. 24-membered (-Cd-N-C-C-S-O-)(4) rings are formed between neighbouring Cd(2+) ions; these are inter-connected, forming a two-dimensional layer structure. In respect to stereogenic amin

Jejunal mucosa lymphoid cell subsets and the expression of major histocompatibility complex antigens in children.

Using monoclonal antibodies with the immunoperoxidase technique the distribution pattern of class I and class II antigens of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), and of the lymphocyte subsets have been studied in intestinal biopsies from children without mucosal lesions, from children with coeliac disease (CD) and from infants with cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI). The staining of the intestinal mucosa for class I antigens is unaltered irrespective of the histological picture or the clinical diagnosis. Class II antigens are only partially or not expressed at all by epithelial cells

Multicenter validation of the Italian Pain in Dystonia Scale in idiopathic adult-onset cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: The Pain in Dystonia Scale (PIDS) is a self-administered instrument to assess pain in dystonia, validated in cervical dystonia (CD). OBJECTIVE: To translate and culturally adapt the PIDS into Italian following a standardized forward-backward procedure and to validate the resulting Italian version (I-PIDS) in patients with idiopathic adult-onset CD as part of a multicenter effort aimed at evaluating its clinimetric properties across dystonia subtypes. METHODS: I-PIDS was completed by 64 Italian patients with cervical dystonia from 16 centers, three months or more after their last

[Non-responsive coeliac disease: what to do?].

Coeliac disease (CD) is the most common cause of villous atrophy and is increasingly recognized. The majority of CD patients responds to a gluten-free diet (GFD). However, some patients experience persistence or recurrence of symptoms despite a GFD. These patients require further diagnostic workup. We describe a 62-year-old female with recurring symptoms attributed to refractory coeliac disease (RCD) type I. A 66-year-old patient with a similar history had aberrant intraepithelial lymphocytes characteristic for RCD type II in her duodenum. Furthermore, in a third CD patient described here, mic

Cultural Adaptation and Reliability Testing of the Coeliac Disease Food Attitudes and Behaviours Scale in Brazil.

Background: Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune chronic condition that requires a strict diet without gluten as a single effective treatment. However, adherence to a life-long gluten-free diet (GFD) may promote psychological suffering and disordered eating. The Coeliac Disease Food Attitudes and Behaviours Scale (CD-FAB) is the only instrument specifically designed to evaluate these aspects in individuals with CD. Objective: This study aimed to translate the CD-FAB and test its reliability in the Brazilian population. Methods: The research was conducted in three stages: (i) translation and c

Induction of metallothionein mRNA and protein in murine astrocyte cultures.

Astrocytes are known to express metallothionein (MT) and were studied in culture to determine whether MT could be directly induced and which isoforms are induced. Primary astrocyte cultures were established from neonatal CF-1 mice. Both concentration-response and time-course analyses for MT induction at the protein level were determined. At the mRNA level, induction of MT-I, -II, and -III was examined 6 hr following the addition of the inducing agents. Dexamethasone (Dex), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), or zinc (Zn) increased (three- to fourfold) MT protein in the astrocytes, whereas methyl mercu

Reducing sleep medication via parallel delivery of clinical pharmacist-led deprescribing and clinician-supervised asynchronous CBT for insomnia: the SEDATIVE trial.

Chronic insomnia is a prevalent disorder that negatively impacts Veterans’ health. The first-line intervention is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I); however, sleep medications, which have unreliable effectiveness and pose risks for adverse events, are the most commonly used intervention. Pairing CBT-I with deprescribing (the supervised reduction of medications) can enhance medication reduction outcomes and reduce rebound insomnia. This pilot trial tests the parallel delivery of Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner (CPP) deprescribing and a digital clinical decision support (CDS) plat

Isolation and partial characterization of a cadmium-binding protein from the liver of alligators exposed to cadmium.

Seven American alligators, Alligator mississippiensis, were each administered a single, intracardiac injection of cadmium chloride, at a dose of 1.0 mg Cd/kg body wt. At sacrifice, the highest concentration of Cd was found in the liver, bound to a cytosolic protein with characteristics similar to mammalian metallothionein (MT). Gel filtration (Sephadex G-75) of the cytosol revealed a peak containing Cd and to a lesser extent, zinc (Zn), having the same relative elution volume (Ve/Vo) as rat hepatic Cd, Zn-MT. Anion-exchange chromatography (DEAE-Sephacel) of material having a Ve/Vo of 1.7-1.9 r

Absolute configurations of four resorcylic acid lactones, paecilomycins J-M, by CD/TDDFT calculations.

The absolute configurations of four resorcylic acid lactones (RALs), paecilomycins J-M (1-3 and 5), were assigned by Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory (TDDFT) calculations of their electronic circular dichroism (CD) spectra. The previously reported structure 4 for paecilomycin M was found to be incorrect and should be changed to structure 5. Analysis of structure-spectrum relationship for this group of RALs suggested that V'-shape conformations give type I CD spectra (two negative Cotton effects around 300 and 260 nm, a positive Cotton effect around 220 nm) while V-shape conformations y

Cadmium in fertilisers used for cacao production: a case study in Colombia.

The cacao crop is important for Colombia due to its high economic impact. One concern is the presence of cadmium (Cd) in beans, which can enter the soil from various sources, including fertilisers. However, to date, no studies have been carried out to identify Cd in these inputs. Therefore, this study seeks to determine Cd concentrations in (i) organic matter, (ii) chemical fertilisers and (iii) lime, together with the available fraction accessible to the cacao tree. A total of 133 fertilisers used in eight departments of Colombia were assessed. For 10 of these fertilisers a sequential extract

High-mobility group box 1 regulates cytoprotective autophagy in a mouse spermatocyte cell line (GC-2spd) exposed to cadmium.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental and industrial pollutant that induces a broad spectrum of toxicological effects, influences a variety of human organs, and is associated with poor semen quality and male infertility. Increasing evidence demonstrates that Cd induces testicular germ cell apoptosis in rodent animals. However, the specific effect of Cd exposure on autophagy in germ cells is poorly understood. METHODS: We investigate the role of high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), a ubiquitous nuclear protein, on Cd-evoked autophagy in a mouse spermatocyte cell line (GC-2spd). R

Relationship between latency of brainstem auditory-evoked potentials and head size in dogs.

Cranium and brainstem dimensions were measured in 32 postmortem dog heads. Positive correlations were found between cranium length (CL) and brainstem length (BL) (r = 0.87), between cranium width (CW) and brainstem width (BW) (r = 0.83), and between cranium distance (CD = CL+CW/2) and brainstem distance (BD = BL+BW/2) (r = 0.91). Positive correlation coefficients were also found between CL and CW (r = 0.90), and between BL and BW (r = 0.85). It was concluded that head size accurately reflected brainstem size. A least squares estimation of the brainstem distance (BD) from CL and CW values was B

A "Ship-in-a-Bottle" strategy to create folic acid nanoclusters inside the nanocages of γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks.

Assembled between γ-cyclodextrins (CD) and potassium ions, γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOF) create spatially extended and ordered cage-like structures. Herein, it was demonstrated that folic acid (FA), a model molecule, could be densely packed inside CD-MOF reaching 2:1 FA:CD molar ratio. This "Ship-in-a-Bottle" strategy leads to a 1450 fold increase of the apparent solubility of FA. Moreover, the bioavailability of FA inside CD-MOF in rats was enhanced by a factor of 1.48 as compared to free FA. The unique mechanism of FA incorporation in the CD-MOF 3D network was also explore

Immunohistochemical cathepsin-D expression in breast cancer: correlation with established pathological parameters and survival.

Breast cancer is an increasingly important cause of illness and death among women. In recent years, several novel prognostic determinants of breast cancer have been identified, including Cathepsin-D (CD) protein. CD protein expression was analyzed immunohistochemically (IHC) in tumor specimens (315 patients) of infiltrating ductal breast carcinoma. These patients also had axillary lymph node sampling. Overexpression of CD was observed in 39% of the tumors. IHC results were compared with the histological grade. Seventy nine percent (n = 95; 79%) tumor positivity was seen in grade II tumors, fol

Mediation of the depolarization-induced [Ca(2+)]i increase in rat sublingual acini by acetylcholine released from nerve terminals.

In sublingual mucous acini, membrane depolarization induces a threefold transient increase in cytosolic free Ca(2+) concentration [(Ca(2+))i]. The underlying mechanism was examined by using the Ca(2+) sensitive fluorescent indicator fura-2. Membrane depolarization with high K+ induced a transient [Ca(2+)]i increase in acini, but not in single acinar cells. Atropine, pirenzepine and 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine methiodide prevented the[Ca(2)+]i increase, suggesting the involvement of muscarinic receptor activation. Inhibition of the inositol trisphosphate (IP3)-sensitive Ca(2+) release

Microalgae enhance cadmium accumulation in Perilla frutescens: root structural adaptation and secretion-mediated detoxification.

INTRODUCTION: Cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation is often constrained by the low accumulation capacity and limited stress tolerance of most plant species. Developing approaches to overcome these limitations is essential for more efficient phytoremediation. METHODS: The effect of microalgae supplementation on Cd phytoextraction in Perilla frutescens was evaluated under Cd stress, with plant growth, Cd accumulation, and root physiological, structural, and metabolic responses examined to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: Microalgae supplementation significantly enhanced total plant bioma

Accumulation of heavy metals in water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) cultivated in the Bangkok region, Thailand.

The aquatic plant water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), either wild or cultivated, is found throughout Southeast Asia and is a widely consumed vegetable in the region. Many of the waters where I. aquatica grows serve as recipients for domestic and other types of wastewater. Because these waters contain not only nutrients, but often also a wide variety of pollutants such as heavy metals from various human activities, many people risk intoxication. To estimate the accumulation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), total mercury (total Hg), and methylmercury in I. aquatica and the potential hazard to human hea

Why is damage limited to the mucosa in ulcerative colitis but transmural in Crohn's disease?

It has been a big puzzle as why the inflammation of ulcerative colitis (UC) is limited to the mucosa, while in Crohn's disease (CD) the inflammation is transmural and can be seen in all layers of the gut. Here, I give a tentative explanation extended from the unified hypothesis I proposed on the etiology of inflammatory bowel disease. This hypothesis suggested that both UC and CD are caused by weakening of the gut barrier due to damage of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases resulting from a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chem
