Morin mitigates cadmium-induced testicular impairment by stimulating testosterone secretion and germ cell proliferation in mice.

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the heavy metal pollutants present in the environment due to human intervention. It is well known that Cd causes toxicological effects on various organs, including the testes. Morin hydrate is a plant-derived bioflavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-stress properties. Thus, the question can be raised as to whether Morin has an effect on Cd-intoxication-induced testicular impairment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of Morin on Cd-mediated disruption of testicular activity. Mice were divided into three groups: group 1 served a

Is Turkish coffee protects Drosophila melanogaster on cadmium acetate toxicity by promoting antioxidant enzymes?

With their increasing use in today's industry, heavy metals cause biochemical and biophysical changes by affecting the control and regulatory systems of living things. Cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal, spreads to the environment through both natural sources and industrial activities. It is taken into the organism through water, food, skin contact or smoke. Systems and organs of living things are directly or indirectly affected by Cd toxicity. Besides their recreational usage, herbal products such as coffee are preferred in alternative medicine because of their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antica

Cadmium chloride toxicity revisited: effect on certain andrological, endocrinological and biochemical parameters of adult male rabbits.

The present study was devised to assess the effects of cadmium chloride (CdCl(2)) administration on certain andrological, endocrinological and biochemical alterations in adult male rabbits (n=24). The animals were assigned to control (n=8) and experimental (n=16) group. Experimental group was orally administered with 1.5 mg/kg body weight of CdCl(2). The trials were carried out for a total of 5 weeks and blood sampling was carried out on weekly basis. A gradual decrease was noticed for body weight in the experimental group from week 1 to 5, being significantly lower in week 4 and 5 (P<0.05). A

Identifying early urinary metabolic changes with long-term environmental exposure to cadmium by mass-spectrometry-based metabolomics.

Cadmium (Cd) is a common environmental pollutant, and urinary Cd (UCd) is generally used as a marker of exposure; however, our understanding on the related urinary metabolic changes caused by Cd exposure is still not clear. In this study, we applied a mass-spectrometry-based metabolomic approach to assess the urinary metabolic changes in human with long-term environmental Cd exposure, aimed to identify early biomarkers to assess Cd nephrotoxicity. Urine samples from 94 female never smokers aged 44-70 with UCd in the range of 0.20-68.67 μg/L were analyzed by liquid chromatography quadrupole tim

Renal dysfunction induced by cadmium: biomarkers of critical effects.

Cadmium (Cd) is cumulative poison which can damage the kidneys after prolonged exposure in the industry or the environment. Renal damage induced by Cd affects primarily the cellular and functional integrity of the proximal tubules, the main site of the renal accumulation of the metal. This results in a variety of urinary abnormalities including an increased excretion of calcium, amino acids, enzymes and proteins. These effects have been documented by a large number of studies conducted during more than two decades in experimental animals and in populations environmentally or occupationally exp

Concentration of cadmium in rice and urinary indicators of renal dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine the relation between concentrations of cadmium (Cd) in rice and urinary concentrations of indicators of renal dysfunction and the prevalence of abnormalities in urine in areas polluted by Cd. (2) To establish the maximum allowable concentration of Cd in rice from these findings. METHODS: The target population consisted of 1703 inhabitants (832 men and 871 women) aged over 50 years who consumed home grown rice and had lived in the same hamlet in areas polluted by Cd in the Kakehashi River basin in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan for at least 30 years. The correlation coef

Osteopenia in inhabitants with renal dysfunction induced by exposure to environmental cadmium.

Bone density was measured in 28 women with itai-itai disease, 92 men and 114 women with cadmium-induced renal dysfunctions and 44 men and 66 women living in the three different non-polluted areas using a microdensitometer. The values of both indices corresponding to cortical width and bone mineral content were significantly lower in itai-itai disease patients than the cadmium-exposed women with renal dysfunctions and the non-exposed subjects. The cadmium-exposed women also showed a decrease in bone density compared with the non-exposed subjects. A significant decrease in bone density was also

[Concentration of serum iron and transferrin saturation with iron as indices of changes resulting from chronic exposure to chemicals in industry].

An attempt was undertaken to use the following indices of systemic changes resulting from longlasting occupational exposure to some chemicals: -- ferrum concentration in blood serum, the level of latent capacity to bind ferrum, and the degree of transferrin saturation with ferrum. The examination involved 177 clinically healthy men, aged 18--60. The control group consisted of 40 healthy men, aged 22--60. In 30.5% of persons, deviations were found, which might be induced by disturbances in general immunity of the organism, whereas in 16,4% the deviations might indicate chronic systemic changes.

Neurodegeneration Induced by Metals in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Metals are a component of a variety of ecosystems and organisms. They can generally be divided into essential and nonessential metals. The essential metals are involved in physiological processes once the deficiency of these metals has been associated with diseases. Although iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are important for life, it has been evidenced that they are also involved in neuronal damage in many neurodegenerative disorders. Nonessential metals, which are metals without physiological functions, are present in trace or higher levels in living organisms. Occupational, environmental, o

Rat Hepatocytes Mitigate Cadmium Toxicity by Forming Annular Gap Junctions and Degrading Them via Endosome-Lysosome Pathway.

Gap junction protein connexin 43 (Cx43) plays a critical role in gap junction communication in rat hepatocytes. However, those located between hepatocytes are easily internalized following exposure to poisons. Herein, we investigated the potential of buffalo rat liver 3A (BRL 3A) cells to generate annular gap junctions (AGJs) proficient at alleviating cadmium (Cd) cytotoxic injury through degradation via an endosome-lysosome pathway. Our results showed that Cd-induced damage of liver microtubules promoted Cx43 internalization and increased Cx43 phosphorylation at Ser373 site. Furthermore, we e

Widespread exposure of powerful owls to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides in Australia spans an urban to agricultural and forest landscape.

The powerful owl (Ninox strenua) is a threatened apex predator that consumes mainly arboreal marsupial prey. Low density populations reside in urban landscapes where their viability is tenuous. The catalyst for this research was the reported death of eight powerful owls around Melbourne, Australia, in less than one year (2020/2021). Eighteen deceased owls were toxicologically screened. We assessed toxic metals (Mercury Hg, Lead Pb, Cadmium Cd and Arsenic As) and anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in liver (n = 18 owls) and an extensive range of agricultural chemicals in muscle (n = 14). Almost a

Cadmium induces osteomalacia mediated by proximal tubular atrophy and disturbances of phosphate reabsorption. A study of 11 autopsies.

Osteomalacia of cadmium (Cd) poisoning (Itai-Itai disease) is induced by renal tubular dysfunction; however, the precise pathological changes and mechanisms have not been adequately elucidated. Of the 25 inhabitants in a Cd-polluted area who developed chronic tubular proteinuria, 22 individuals died over a 16-year period. Autopsies were performed in 11 cases and osteomalacia was detected in 9 cases (mean age at death 82.2 +/- 7.8 years; 1 man and 8 women). Histologically, osteomalacia occurred coincidentally with diffuse atrophy of the proximal tubules, moderate thickening of the tubular basem

[The role of resveratrol on heavy metal-induced oxidative stress].

Introduction and objetives: oxidative stress is considered one of the main mechanisms of genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of heavy metals. In contrast, resveratrol has antioxidant properties and is one of the most studied polyphenols due to its wide variety of beneficial health effects. However, there are no systematic reviews of the scientific literature in which the effects of resveratrol on oxidative stress induced by heavy metals are analyzed. Methods: in this review, articles were searched using the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases (1996-2018). After applying various filters, eleven in

Transport of organic compounds in renal plasma membrane vesicles of cadmium intoxicated rats.

Effects of cadmium intoxication on renal transport systems for various organic compounds were studied. Subcutaneous injections of CdCl2 (2 mg Cd/kg.day) for two to three weeks induced marked polyuria, glycosuria, and proteinuria without altering glomerular filtration rate. In renal cortical brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) isolated from cadmium treated rats, Na(+)-dependent D-glucose uptake was markedly attenuated, and this was due to reduction in Vmax and not Km. Likewise, Na(+)-driven L-glutamate transport and H(+)-driven tetraethylammonium transport were significantly reduced. In renal
