Caffeic Acid Ameliorates l-Methionine-Induced Hyperhomocysteinemia, Leading to Decreased Adult Neurogenesis and Oxidative Stress Status in Adult Rats.

Chronic l-methionine (l-met) treatment induces hyperhomocysteinemia, which impairs neurogenesis and memory by increasing oxidative stress. Caffeic acid (CA) possesses antioxidant properties that reduce brain oxidative damage and promote neurogenesis. This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of caffeic acid against the impact of l-met on hippocampal neurogenesis. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 10 per group): Control, l-met, CA, and CA+l-met. Rats received daily oral gavage of l-met (1.7 g/kg) and/or CA (40 mg/kg) for 28 days. The results dem

A neprilysin effector from the pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus targets pine caffeic acid O-methyltransferase and inhibits lignin biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus can devastate the pine forest ecosystem. Lignification is a vital strategy to help hosts resist pathogens, but how B. xylophilus effectors regulate the lignin biosynthesis of pine trees are unknown. RESULTS: In this study, we identified a B. xylophilus neprilysin effector BxNEP1, which rose in the three B. xylophilus transcriptomes of different infection stages. We demonstrated that BxNEP1 is required for B. xylophilus reproduction and virulence during parasitic stages. Silencing of the BxNEP1 gene resulted in the upregulation

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester derivatives inhibit glyoxalase I activity and induce cell death in cultured cancer cell lines.

Glyoxalase I (GLO I) is the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for the detoxification of methylglyoxal, a toxic byproduct of anaerobic glycolysis. GLO I is highly expressed in various tumors and has therefore been recognized as a promising target for cancer therapy. We previously identified several cis-diol-containing polyphenols, namely, myricetin, delphinidin, and piceatannol, as potent inhibitors of human GLO I, inducing cell death in GLO I-dependent cancer cells. In this study, we examined the inhibitory abilities to GLO I of another cis-diol-containing polyphenol, caffeic acid phenethyl est

A novel biomimetic nanovesicle containing caffeic acid-coupled carbon quantum dots for the the treatment of Alzheimer's disease via nasal administration.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive and physical impairment. Neuroinflammation is related to AD, and the misfolding and aggregation of amyloid protein in the brain creates an inflammatory microenvironment. Microglia are the predominant contributors to neuroinflammation, and abnormal activation of microglia induces the release of a large amount of inflammatory factors, promotes neuronal apoptosis, and leads to cognitive impairment. In this study, we used microglial membranes containing caffeic acid-coupled carbon quantum dots to

A Central Contribution of TG2 Activity to the Antiproliferative and Pro-Apoptotic Effects of Caffeic Acid in K562 Cells of Human Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

Caffeic acid (CA) has shown antitumor activity in numerous solid and blood cancers. We have recently reported that CA is active in reducing proliferation and triggering apoptosis in both Imatinib-sensitive and resistant Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) cells. Tissue transglutaminase type 2 (TG2) enzyme is involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis of numerous types of cancer. However, its activity has different effects depending on the type of tumor. This work investigated the possible involvement of TG2 activation in the triggering of CA-dependent anticancer effects on the K562 cell line, whi

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester promotes wound healing of mice pressure ulcers affecting NF-κB, NOS2 and NRF2 expression.

AIMS: In pressure ulcers, the synthesis of reactive oxygen species induced by ischemia and reperfusion leads to chronic inflammation and tissue damage, which impair the closure of these lesions. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), found in propolis, promotes cutaneous wound healing of acute lesions and severe burns. However, the effects of CAPE on wound healing of pressure ulcers have not been investigated. This study investigated the effects of CAPE administration in a murine model of pressure ulcers. MAIN METHODS: To induce pressure ulcers, two cycles of ischemia and reperfusion by externa

Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) Protects PC12 Cells from Cisplatin-Induced Neurotoxicity by Activating the NGF-Signaling Pathway.

Cisplatin is a highly effective chemotherapeutic drug that is toxic to the peripheral nervous system. Findings suggest that axons are early targets of the neurotoxicity of cisplatin. Although many compounds have been reported as neuroprotective, there is no effective treatment against the neurotoxicity of cisplatin. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a propolis component with neuroprotective potential mainly attributed to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. We have recently demonstrated the neurotrophic potential of CAPE in a cellular model of neurotoxicity related to Parkinson's
