The femurs from rats given 120 ppm fluoride in their drinking water for 4 weeks were examined with histological, histochemical, and radiographic methods. Blood removed from the rats prior to sacrifice was analyzed for calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase. Results of this study indicated that the ingestion of fluoride produced wide osteoid seams on the periosteal surface of the femoral diaphysis within 4 weeks. The increase in osteoid appeared to be due to an increase in the number of osteoid-producing cells (osteoblasts) along with a subsequent delay in the mineralization of this tiss

The amounts of loosely bound fluoride (F) deposited on human enamel by 4-min and 2-hour treatments with either acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) or a monocalcium phosphate monohydrate and sodium hexafluorosilicate (MCPM-SHFS)-containing gel were measured with the use of a constant-composition F washing method. Enamel biopsies conducted before treatment and after washing were used to determine the firmly bound F uptake. The results showed that the MCPM-SHFS treatments produced significantly more loosely bound F than did the APF treatments. The 4-min treatment with either APF or MCPM-SHFS did

Fluoride content and flow-rate of fertilizer plant wastewater from phosphoric acid and/or triple superphosphate (TSP) production lead to the discharge of several thousand tons of fluoride (F(-)) per year and even more for phosphate (PO4(3-)). Since sustainability is an important environmental concern, the removal methods should allow phosphorus and fluoride to be recycled as a sustainable products for use as raw materials either in agricultural or industrial applications. In the present work, separative recovery with lime of these two target species was investigated. A preliminary speciation s

OBJECTIVE: To determine if vitamin D is more effective than no therapy or calcium alone in the management of corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis, and to determine how vitamin D compares with other osteoporosis therapies, e.g., bisphosphonates, calcitonin, or fluoride, for this condition.
METHODS: We evaluated all formulations of vitamin D, including its active metabolites and analogs. A systematic search for published and unpublished studies was conducted using MEDLINE (1966-December 1997), bibliographic references, abstracts from proceedings of recent national meetings, and contact with phar

Fluoride contamination in drinking water poses a significant environmental and public health challenge, necessitating the development of sustainable and efficient remediation materials. In this study, calcium oxide (CaO) nanoparticles were synthesized using banana blossom calyx residue as a renewable biotemplate through a simple precipitation-calcination approach. The porous biomass architecture facilitated calcium ion adsorption and the subsequent formation of nanostructured CaO. Characterization by XRD, TGA/DTA, UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, FTIR, FESEM, and EDS confir

The effects of electrolytes on the rates of hydroxyapatite (HAp) formation at 25 and 38 degrees C were investigated. Solutions were selected to contain ions in common with HAp lattice ions or to contain ions capable of substituting into HAp. The effects of phosphate, calcium, chloride, and fluoride were studied in particular. The reactants from which HAp was formed were a mixture of the particulate solids CaHPO4 and Ca4(PO4)2O. These reactants were proportioned to form the calcium deficient composition Ca9HPO4(PO4)5OH at complete reaction. The rates of HAp formation were examined by determinin

The purpose of this study was to determine whether total serum calcium, parathyroid gland structure, and/or levels of parathyroid hormone, 1,25 and 24,25 DHCC, are altered in pigs with dental and skeletal fluorosis. Eight experimental animals receiving 2 mg F-/kg b.w. per day from age 8-14 months were compared with eight controls. Concentrations of plasma fluoride and total plasma calcium were assessed at intervals throughout the experiment and during a 48 hour period at day 110-111 of the experiment. At the same time, concentrations of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone were measured using a

Root-surface caries, like enamel caries, develops as a subsurface type of mineral loss. Very little is known about the composition of the surface zone covering the body of the lesion, and the ultrastructure and composition of carious cementum are not known. The aim of this study was to correlate the ultrastructure and arrangement of the cementum crystals with the distribution of fluoride and calcium in root cementum from human teeth with sound, unexposed, or exposed root surfaces as well as in early stages of root-surface caries. Microradiographically, unexposed specimens showed a relatively h

A constant-composition fluoride (F) titration method was used to measure the amount of leachable F deposited on tooth surfaces in vitro by a 1-min rinse with a 228-ppm F solution (12 mmol/l sodium fluoride). The mean F uptake was 0.23 +/- (SE) 0.07 microgram/cm2, corresponding to less than 0.2% of the F contained in the rinse. The present study describes a new F rinse system that consisted of two solutions. Solution A contained a soluble calcium salt and a buffer. Solution B contained sodium fluorosilicate, a complex fluoride salt. When solutions A and B were combined, the free F ions produced

To investigate the effect of fluoride on the mobilization of skeletal magnesium and on kidney calcification during magnesium depletion, male Holtzman rats were fed a magnesium-sufficient diet (400 ppm of magnesium) and drinking water containing either 0, 50 or 100 ppm of fluoride for a 20-day period prior to the initiation of magnesium deficiency. The high fluoride regimen resulted in a 100-fold increase in the fluoride content of the skeleton. On day 20 magnesium depletion was initiated by feeding the animals a diet containing 12 ppm of magnesium. Over a 4-week period of magnesium deprivation

The amounts of loosely-bound fluoride (F) deposited on human enamel by two topical F treatments were measured with use of a constant-composition F washing method. Enamel biopsies conducted before treatment and after the washing were used for determination of the firmly-bound F uptake. The results showed that (1) the washing system did not remove F from untreated enamel surface, (2) a four-minute application of an acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel deposited 27.2 (2.4) (mean, S.E.) micrograms of loosely-bound F per cm2 of enamel surface and 186 (111) ppm of firmly-bound F in the outer 10 m

Fluoride varnish is developed to prolong the contact time between fluoride and tooth surface, so that the tooth becomes more resistant to caries attack. The active ingredient of fluoride varnish is usually 5% sodium fluoride, (22,600 ppm fluoride). Studies have found that fairly insoluble globules of calcium fluoride-like material formed on the tooth surface after topical fluoride application. These globules act as a reservoir of fluoride in the mouth for a prolonged period of time. Systematic reviews corroborate evidence for the efficacy of fluoride varnish in the prevention of dental caries.

Enamel fluorosis occurs when fluoride concentrations in or in the vicinity of the forming enamel are excessive during its pre-eruptive development. Fluoride concentrations in plasma, enamel and other tissues reflect the difference between intake and excretion, i.e. fluoride balance. In addition to the diet, modern sources of ingested fluoride include a variety of dental products, some of which have been identified as risk factors for fluorosis. Fluoride absorption is inversely related to dietary calcium which, at high concentrations, may cause net fluoride secretion into the gastrointestinal t

The incidence of dental fluorosis in 46,000 children in the Punjab was assessed and compared with the fluoride content of their water supplies. Ten villages were selected for more detailed studies of skeletal as well as dental fluorosis.Factors other than the fluoride contect of the drinking water which were found to influence the incidence and the severity of fluorosis were the chemical composition of the water and in particular its calcium content; the duration of exposure; sex and occupation; nutritional status; and climatic and geological variations. The role of fluoride-containing foodstu

Although an excess intake of fluoride has been reported to cause skeletal fluorosis, very little is known about the mechanism of adverse effects of fluoride on bone. In the present study cytotoxic effects of fluoride were studied using the osteosarcoma cell line, UMR 106. The DNA ladder formation upon agarose electrophoresis and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining revealed that UMR 106 underwent apoptosis following exposure to 5 mM fluoride for 8 h. On the other hand exposure to A23187, a calcium ionophore, caused necrosis while co-expo

Although the blood-brain barrier is relatively impermeable to fluoride, it does not pose an absolute barrier and fluoride has the ability to enter the brain. The literature was examined to assess the quality of the evidence for cerebral impairment occurring due to exposure to fluoride from therapeutic or environmental sources. Several surveys of persons chronically exposed to industrial fluoride pollution reported symptoms related to impaired central nervous system functioning with impaired cognition and memory. Examination of individual case reports showed the evidence for aetiological relati

The hydro-osmotic response of the toad bladder to antidiuretic hormone and cyclic AMP was inhibited by the methoxyflurane metabolite, fluoride. The osmotic transfer of water in the absence of hormone was unaffected by fluoride as was the hydroosmotic response due to hypertonicity of the serosal bathing media. Osmotic water movements across N-ethylmaleimide-"fixed" vasopressin or cyclic AMP-stimulated bladders were likewise unchanged by fluoride, suggesting that fluoride is exerting an action subsequent to the endogenous formation of cyclic AMP but before the final effector mechanism. Fluoride

The aim of the present in vitro experiments was to determine whether the protection of enamel by topically applied fluoride against demineralization by bacterial acids would depend on the fluoride sensitivity of the bacteria. Glucose-agarose gel suspensions of fluoride-sensitive and fluoride-resistant mutans streptococci were placed on bovine enamel specimens with different amounts of fluoride. One group of specimens was untreated, a second group had been pretreated with a F-lacquer, and a third group had been pretreated with the F-lacquer and rinsed subsequently with a KOH-solution, to remove
