Rabies virus variants from bats closely related to variants found in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), a neglected source of human rabies infection in Brazil.

Rabies is a fatal viral zoonosis caused by rabies virus (RABV). RABV infects the central nervous system and triggers acute encephalomyelitis in both humans and animals. Endemic in the Brazilian Northeast region, RABV emergence in distinct wildlife species has been identified as a source of human rabies infection and as such, constitutes a public health concern. Here, we performed post-mortem RABV analyses of 144 encephalic tissues from bats sampled from January to July 2022, belonging to 15 different species. We identified phylogenetically distinct RABV from Phyllostomidae and Molossidae bats

Tissue expression of antigens of ABH blood groups in species of New World Monkeys (Aotus infulatus, Callithrix jacchus, Sapajus apella and Saimiri sciureus).

ABH antigens are histo-antigens, but were first described on the surface of human erythrocytes. They are found in those cells only in great apes and humans, while in more primitive animals they are found in tissues and body fluids. ABH antigens are mainly distributed in tissues that are in contact with the external environment and may serve as ligands for pathogens in tissues or block their connection. Description of the distribution of these molecules in non-human primate tissues is restricted to a few tissues and species. This paper describes the expression of human A, B and H type antigens

In vitro activity of two beta-lactam antibiotics against strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group isolated from humans and from Callithrix penicillata marmosets.

The purpose of this study was to determine the in vitro activity of cefoxitin and imipenem against strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group isolated from the intestinal tract of humans and Callithrix penicillata marmosets. The majority of the human and marmosets B. fragilis strains was resistant to cefoxitin. The percentages of resistance to cefoxitin among B. fragilis marmoset strains were higher than those of human origin. On the other hand, the majority of the other Bacteroides of the B. fragilis group isolated from human and marmosets were susceptible to this drug. Imipenem was the most e

Localization of mRNA for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiopoietins and their receptors during the peri-implantation period and early pregnancy in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

Implantation of a blastocyst into a receptive endometrium is a prerequisite for successful pregnancy. Angiogenesis is a key event in this process but the mechanisms by which localized changes in vascular permeability and angiogenesis occur have yet to be elucidated. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 have been implicated as key players in vascular remodelling and placentation. Angiopoietins also appear to have a significant role in regulation of blood vessel growth, maturation and regression. The aim of this study was to describe the molecular regul

Patterns of relaxin and steroids in the reproductive cycle of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus): effects of prostaglandin F2 alpha on relaxin and progesterone secretion during pregnancy.

We measured the concentrations of relaxin (Rlx), progesterone, and estradiol-17 beta in serum samples obtained twice or three times weekly from marmosets during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. The cyclic patterns and concentrations of progesterone and estradiol-17 beta were similar to those reported by previous investigators. Rlx was not detected in individual serum samples ( < 0.62-1.25 ng/ml) obtained from nonpregnant marmosets. However, pooling of luteal serum from all animals permitted assay of much larger volumes of serum (0.4 ml vs. 0.1 ml), and a concentration of about 1 ng/ml was dete

Oral transmission of human T-cell leukemia virus type-I into a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) as an experimental model for milk-borne transmission.

To obtain experimental support for possible milk-borne infection of human T-cell leukemia virus type-I (HTLV-I), short-term-cultured viral antigen-positive lymphocytes obtained from peripheral blood of adult T-cell leukemia lymphoma complex (ATLL) patients were inoculated into the oral cavity of two adult common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in amounts comparable to those of HTLV-I-carrying cells fed to a baby in the milk of seropositive mothers. One of the animals seroconverted 2.5 months after the first inoculation. Cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes of the marmoset reveale

High parasitism by Primasubulura jacchi (Ascaridida: Subuluridae) and infestation of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae) in Callithrix jacchus (Primates: Callitrichidae) in Northeastern Brazil.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a neotropical primate widely distributed in Brazil and frequently associated with urban and peri-urban environments, a condition that favors exposure to different parasites. The present study aimed to report the occurrence of Primasubulura jacchi and to document the first record of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato parasitizing C. jacchus in Northeastern Brazil. A debilitated female C. jacchus was rescued in a peri-urban area of the municipality of Garanhuns, Pernambuco, and referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of the Agres

Histopathology findings in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus Linnaeus, 1758) with chronic weight loss associated with bile tract obstruction by infestation with Platynosomum (Loos, 1907).

Chronic weight loss in marmosets is often associated with wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS), an important disease that occurs in callitrichid colonies around the world. Even though its etiology is very difficult to determine, particular variables, such as weight loss, diarrhea and alopecia, associated or not with infestation in the pancreatic ducts with Trichospirura leptossoma (Nematoda: Thelazioidea), seem to be linked with the syndrome. This study investigated the histopathology of the lungs, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts and pancreatic ducts of six common marmosets (C

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in heart tissue from common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) monitored for yellow fever and rabies in Pernambuco state, Northeastern of Brazil.

There is limited available information concerning the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in noncaptive monkeys. Also, New World monkeys (NWM) are highly susceptible to toxoplasmosis, which is a conservation concern. This study aimed to investigate apicomplexan parasites in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) collected for yellow fever and rabies surveillance program in Northeastern region of Brazil. Heart fragments of 39 free-ranging common marmosets were analyzed for the presence of the 18S rDNA gene of apicomplexan parasites by nested PCR. Positive samples were sequenced. T. gondii DNA was de

[Risks of transmitting rabies virus from captive domiciliary common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) to human beings, in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, state of Ceará, Brazil].

INTRODUCTION: In the State of Ceará, a new variant of the rabies virus was identified associated with cases of human rabies transmitted by common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), which are frequently kept as pets. This new variant does not present antigenic proximity or genetic relationship to variants of the virus isolated from bats and terrestrial mammals from the American continent. The present study aimed to evaluate the risk factors of rabies virus transmission from common marmosets (C. jacchus) maintained as pets in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, State of Ceará, Brazil, to human be

Cografting of hamster (Phodopus sungorus) and marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) testicular tissues into nude mice does not overcome blockade of early spermatogenic differentiation in primate grafts.

The ectopic xenotransplantation of testicular tissues into nude mice is a tool to generate sperm from immature testes. Immunodeficient mice as recipients of xenografts offered an appropriate microenvironment for differentiation of testicular tissue from hamsters, goats, pigs, and macaques. One exception is the neotropical primate Callithrix jacchus. Spermatogenesis in testicular grafts from marmosets does not proceed beyond the spermatogonial stage. The most likely cause for the poor graft development of marmosets is a deletion of exon 10 in the luteinizing hormone-receptor (LHR) gene, which r

Prevalence of Platynosomum spp infection and its association with biliary lithiasis and secondary bacterial infections in free-ranging marmosets (Callithrix spp) of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Platynosomosis is a parasitic disease caused by a trematode of the genus Platynosomum, a bile duct and gallbladder fluke that has been described in captive neotropical primates (New World primates; NWPs) and causes high morbidity and variable mortality. Although it is a major concern for ex-situ conservation of these animals, there are only a few studies of platynosomosis in free-ranging NWPs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize platynosomosis in a free-ranging population of marmosets (Callithrix spp) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, focusing on the epidemiological and path

Staphylococcus spp. as part of the microbiota and as opportunistic pathogen in free-ranging black-tuffed marmosets (Callithrix penicillata) from urban areas: Epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, and pathology.

BACKGROUND: Marmosets (Callithrix sp.), including black-tuffed marmosets (C. penicillata), are neotropical primates that can be highly adapted to urban environments, especially parks and forested areas near cities. Staphylococcus spp. are part of the microbiota of many different hosts and lead to opportunistic severe infection. Isolates from wild animals can be resistant to antimicrobial drugs. However, there are a few studies that evaluated Staphylococcus spp. in neotropical primates. The goal of this study was to evaluate Staphylococcus spp. isolated from free-ranging black-tuffed marmosets.

Antibodies and Molecular Detection of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum in Samples of Free-Ranging Marmosets (Primates: Callitrichidae: Callithrix spp.) in an Area of Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis in Southeastern Brazil.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne parasitic protozoan infection that affects mammals and involves a complex epidemiology. Although dogs are considered the main reservoir in zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the possible presence of other mammalian species acting as reservoirs has been associated as a possible cause of lack of success in the control of human VL in many endemic areas. The knowledge about natural infections of some species is still scarce, such as nonhuman primates (NHP), especially from the genus Callithrix (marmosets). We investigated the infection by Leishmania (Leishmania)

The trematodes belonging to the genus Platynosomum are biliary parasites of birds and mammals (domestic and wildlife) in tropical and subtropical areas of the globe. Despite several reports on platynosomosis in captive nonhuman primates, mainly in South America, the taxonomy of species of Platynosomum that infect these hosts remains confused, and it is not clear whether the species found in cats is the same that infects nonhuman primates. Because a detailed morphological study of Platynosomum from nonhuman primates is lacking, in this study we analyzed specimens of Platynosomum recovered from

Visual agnosia and Klüver-Bucy syndrome in marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) following ablation of inferotemporal cortex, with additional mnemonic effects of immunotoxic lesions of cholinergic projections to medial temporal areas.

Inferotemporal ablations in the New World monkey, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), produced a persistent impairment on visual discrimination learning and a florid, but transient, Klüver-Bucy syndrome. Monkeys with these ablations were impaired on acquisition of object discriminations to a high criterion and on concurrent discrimination learning, to a single high criterion across all trials. Neither the control monkeys nor the monkeys with inferotemporal ablations found acquisition more difficult when the component discriminations of a set were presented concurrently compared to consec

Histopathologic Patterns and Susceptibility of Neotropical Primates Naturally Infected With Yellow Fever Virus.

Yellow fever is an important zoonotic viral disease that can be fatal for both human and nonhuman primates. We evaluated histopathologic changes in free-ranging neotropical primates naturally infected with yellow fever virus (YFV) compared with uninfected cohorts. The most frequent lesions in primates infected with YFV were hepatic changes characterized by midzonal necrosis with lipidosis and mild inflammation including lymphocytes, macrophages, plasma cells, and infrequently neutrophils. Importantly, severe necrotizing hepatic lesions were often observed in Alouatta sp. (howler monkeys), wher
