Dose-response effects of exercise and caloric restriction on visceral adiposity in overweight and obese adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: To determine and compare the dose-response effects of exercise and caloric restriction on visceral adipose tissue in overweight and obese adults, while controlling for the weekly energy deficit induced by the interventions. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched for randomised controlled trials comparing exercise or caloric restriction against eucaloric controls in overweight or obese adults. The primary outcome was the change in visceral fat measured by CT or MRI. Meta-analyses and meta-regressions were performed to determine the overall effect size (ES)

Effects of whole-body electromyostimulation exercise and caloric restriction on cardiometabolic risk profile and muscle strength in obese women with the metabolic syndrome: a pilot study.

Obesity, particularly in conjunction with further cardiometabolic risk factors, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Increased physical activity and dietary modifications are cornerstones of therapeutic interventions to treat obesity and related risk factors. Whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) has emerged as an innovative, time-efficient type of exercise that can provide positive effects on body composition and muscle strength. However, the impact of WB-EMS on cardiometabolic health in obese individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS) has yet to b

Phlorizin, a novel caloric restriction mimetic, stimulates hypoxia and protects cardiomyocytes through activating autophagy via modulating the Hif-1α/Bnip3 axis in sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory syndrome that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction and life-threatening complications. Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD) has been confirmed to be present in half of patients with septic shock, increasing their mortality rate to 70-90%. The pathogenesis of SIMD is complex, and no specific clinical treatment has yet been developed. Caloric restriction mimetics (CRM), compounds that simulate the biochemical and functional properties of CR, can improve cardiovascular injury by activating autophagy. This study investigated the effect of a n

Comparison of weight loss induced by daily caloric restriction versus intermittent fasting (DRIFT) in individuals with obesity: study protocol for a 52-week randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The standard of care for treating overweight and obesity is daily caloric restriction (DCR). While this approach produces modest weight loss, adherence to DCR declines over time and weight regain is common. Intermittent fasting (IMF) is an alternative dietary strategy for reducing energy intake (EI) that involves >60% energy restriction on 2-3 days per week, or on alternate days, with habitual intake on fed days. While numerous studies have evaluated IMF as a weight loss strategy, there are several limitations including lack of a standard-of-care DCR control, failure to provide gui

Caloric and time restriction diets improve acute kidney injury in experimental menopausal rats: role of silent information regulator 2 homolog 1 and transforming growth factor beta 1.

BACKGROUND: Estrogen has a protective impact on acute kidney injury (AKI); moreover, reducing the daily intake of calories impedes developing diseases. The present study aimed to determine the effects of calorie restriction (CR) and time restriction (TR) diets on the expression of silent information regulator 2 homolog 1 (SIRT1), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), and other indicators in the presence and absence of ovaries in AKI female rats. METHODS: The female rats were divided into two groups, ovariectomized (OVX) and sham, and were placed on CR and TR diets for eight weeks; after

Effect of caloric restriction with probiotic supplementation on body composition, quality of life, and psychobiological factors of obese men: A randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by an excess of fat mass. It is accompanied by a low-grade chronic systemic inflammation state that leads to numerous health disorders. To counteract this scenario, dietary-derived caloric restriction (CR) is the principal intervention for weight loss. Furthermore, probiotic supplementation has gained attention as a co-intervention to optimize weight loss and other health-related factors. As such, we aimed to verify the effect of CR with probiotic supplementation on the body composition, quality of life, sleep quality, anxiety, stre

Effects of Caloric Restriction on DNA Damage: A Comparison of Very Low-Calorie and Standard Reduced-Calorie Diets in Obesity-Non-Randomised, Quasi-Experimental Clinical Intervention Study.

Background: Obesity is a chronic endocrine-metabolic disorder. The risk of comorbidities increases with a higher body mass index (BMI), particularly when BMI ≥ 35.0 kg/m2. Common complications include insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and chronic low-grade inflammation, which collectively impair DNA stability by promoting the formation of genotoxic species. Methods: This non-randomised, quasi-experimental clinical intervention study included 53 participants (both sexes) with a BMI ≥ 35.0 kg/m2, who were assigned to parallel experimental or control streams based on clinical nee

Differential effects of liraglutide naltrexone/bupropion, and caloric restriction on metabolic parameters and beta-cell regeneration in type 2 diabetic rat model: role of beta arrestin 1.

Traditional antidiabetic treatments often carry the risk of beta-cell exhaustion, highlighting the need for therapies that promote beta-cell regeneration. This study investigates the comparative effects of Liraglutide, naltrexone/bupropion (NTX + BUP), and caloric restriction on metabolic control and beta-cell regeneration in a rat model of obese type 2 diabetes. Fifty male albino rats were randomized into five groups: normal control, diabetic control, diabetic + caloric restriction (50%), diabetic + NTX + BUP (4 mg/45 mg /kg/day orally), and diabetic + liraglutide (0.3 mg/kg/day, S.C). Rationale and design of the Caloric Restriction and Exercise protection from Anthracycline Toxic Effects (CREATE) study: a 3-arm parallel group phase II randomized controlled trial in early breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Anthracycline chemotherapy agents are commonly used to treat breast cancer, but also result in cardiac injury, and potentially detrimental effects to vascular and skeletal muscle. Preclinical evidence demonstrates that exercise and caloric restriction can independently reduce anthracycline-related injury to the heart as well as cancer progression, and may be promising short-term strategies prior to treatment administration. For women with breast cancer, a short-term strategy may be more feasible and appealing, as maintaining regular exercise training or a diet throughout chemothera

Combination of Caloric Restriction and a Mixed Training Protocol as an Effective Strategy to Counteract the Deleterious Effects in Trabecular Bone Microarchitecture Caused by a Diet-Induced Obesity in Sprague Dawley Rats.

The association of obesity with changes in bone mass is not clear. Obese individuals tend to have an increased bone mineral density, but other studies have shown that obesity is a major risk factor for fractures. The mechanisms of bone response during a weight loss therapy as well as the possible osteoprotective effect of exercise should be analyzed. The aim of this study was to test the effects of a weight-loss program based on the combination of caloric restriction and/or a mixed training protocol on different parameters of bone morphology and functionality in a DIO rat model. Three stages w

Effect of protein supplementation on hip bone mineral density, cortical thickness, and bone strength in older adult participants during a caloric restriction and aerobic exercise weight loss intervention: a randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Weight loss in older age can cause bone loss. In older adults with overweight/obesity in a weight loss trial, 6-month hip bone strength increased with higher protein intake versus controls consuming the Recommended Dietary Allowance. However, greater weight loss was associated with greater 18-month hip bone mineral density loss. PURPOSE: Weight loss (WL) to treat obesity in older age can exacerbate bone loss. METHODS: This trial assessed the effects of higher protein intake on hip bone outcomes in 187 older adults with overweight/obesity participating in 6 months of active WL (ca

Long-term weight control study. II (weeks 34 to 104). An open-label study of continuous fenfluramine plus phentermine versus targeted intermittent medication as adjuncts to behavior modification, caloric restriction, and exercise.

Between weeks 34 and 104, we explored different schema for administering fenfluramine plus phentermine in open-label fashion. At week 34, the original placebo group participants began taking fenfluramine plus phentermine (placebo-to-active group). Those receiving fenfluramine plus phentermine between weeks 6 and 34 either continued to receive medication or began targeted intermittent therapy. Participants who did not lose 10% of initial weight received an augmented dose (60 mg fenfluramine plus 30 mg phentermine. The placebo-to-active group lost an additional 9.1 +/- 0.8 kg (mean +/- SEM) in t

Differential Acute Impacts of Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery and Matched Caloric Restriction Diet on Insulin Secretion, Insulin Effectiveness and Non-Esterified Fatty Acid Levels Among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is an increasingly common option for control of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity. Mechanisms underlying rapid improvement of T2D after different types of bariatric surgery are not clear. Caloric deprivation and altered levels of non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) have been proposed. This study examines how sleeve gastrectomy (SG), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GBP) or matched hypocaloric diet (DT) achieves improvements in T2D by characterising components of the glucose metabolism and NEFA levels before and 3 days after each intervention. METHODS: Plasma samples at fiv

Restlessness and an Increased Urge to Move (Drive for Activity) in Anorexia Nervosa May Strengthen Personal Motivation to Maintain Caloric Restriction and May Augment Body Awareness and Proprioception: A Lesson From Leptin Administration in Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN), a disorder of voluntary food restriction leading to severe weight loss in female adolescents, remains an enigma. In particular, the appropriation of the starved thin body into the self-concept in AN is a process insufficiently researched and still poorly understood. Healthy humans undergoing starvation experience a slowing of movements and avoid voluntary exercise. By contrast, AN tends to be not infrequently associated with voluntary, sometimes excessive and/or compulsive exercise. Such deliberate exercise, not reported in starvation, seems to be facilitated by an incre
