Campylobacter enteritis in 188 hospitalized patients.

The clinical picture and epidemiologic characteristics of infection due to Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni were studied in 188 patients hospitalized in Finland during a three-year period. All but two patients had diarrhea; 90% had abdominal pain, fever, and fatigue; half had vomiting and headache; one third experienced electrolyte disturbances; and one fifth of the patients had other complications, most commonly pancreatitis (6%) and arthritis (5%). All age groups were affected, most usually those who were 0 to 9 years old and 20 to 29 years old. The incidence of domestic cases increased

Campylobacter enteritis associated with contaminated water.

Approximately 3000 people in Bennington, Vermont, 19% of the population, had a diarrheal illness during the first and second weeks of June 1978. Persons affected reported abdominal cramps (86%), diarrhea (82%), malaise (73%), and headache (47%). The mean duration of illness was 4.6 days. The illness was associated with drinking unboiled water from the town water system. Investigation showed that the entire water system was probably contaminated and the source of contamination was the main unfiltered water source. Bolles Brook. Campylobacter fetus subspecies jejuni was cultured from 15 of 42 re

Campylobacter enteritis associated with foodborne transmission.

During an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at a boys summer camp in Connecticut in June-July 1980, Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 16 of 41 ill persons but from none of 63 controls (P less than 0.001). When the indirect fluorescent antibody assay was used, cross-titering serum and isolates from five patients showed all isolates to be identical. Lack of serologic response in culture-negative ill persons suggested that a second etiologic agent may have been involved. Ten convalescent carriers treated with erythromycin had clearance of Campylobacter from their stools within 72 hours. A

[Campylobacter-enteritis in children (author's transl)].

During 1980 out of 3,680 stool specimens of children aged up to 6 years with diarrhea routinely screened for enteropathogenic bacteria, 72 cases of Campylobacter fetus ssp. jejuni infection were found. They were more common during the summer months, in children aged less than 4 years, and in boys rather than in girls (2, 9:1). The most common symptoms were watery, mucus, and haemorrhagic diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal pain. All strains exhibited nearly identical sensitivity patterns for the chemotherapeutics tested.

Campylobacter enteritis associated with canine infection.

Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni has recently been recognised as a human enteric pathogen. Five cases of campylobacter enteritis are described. All five patients had abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Two of the five patients had bloody diarrhoea and relapses. All the patients had been in contact with young dogs which had had diarrhoea. Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni was isolated from these dogs or from their litter-mates. Canine infection with Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni may be an important source of infection causing diarrhoea in man.

Comparison of culture-based methods for detecting Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter hyointestinalis in dairy cattle feces.

Campylobacter is the most commonly reported cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans. Although cattle are recognized as a potential reservoir for several Campylobacter spp., most detection standards primarily target thermotolerant species, notably Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli, possibly underestimating the prevalence of others. This study evaluated the performance of different culture-based methods for detecting Campylobacter spp. in fecal samples collected rectally from dairy cows in a single commercial research herd across four time points. Six combinations of analyses were

Campylobacter portucalensis sp. nov., a new species of Campylobacter isolated from the preputial mucosa of bulls.

A new species of the Campylobacter genus is described, isolated from the preputial mucosa of bulls (Bos taurus). The five isolates obtained exhibit characteristics of Campylobacter, being Gram-negative non-motile straight rods, oxidase positive, catalase negative and microaerophilic. Phenotypic characteristics and nucleotide sequence analysis of 16S rRNA and hsp60 genes demonstrated that these isolates belong to a novel species within the genus Campylobacter. Based on hsp60 gene phylogenetic analysis, the most related species are C. ureolyticus, C. blaseri and C. corcagiensis. The whole genome

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli: comparison between Etest and a broth dilution method.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter is a leading cause of foodborne gasteroenteritis worldwide. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Campylobacter spp. is not routinely performed by most clinical laboratories. However, the emergence of resistant isolates strengthens the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Etest and Sensititre kit (a broth microdilution method) as methods for susceptibility tests and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to co

Bacteriophage receptor binding protein based assays for the simultaneous detection of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are the most common bacterial causes of foodborne gastroenteritis which is occasionally followed by a debilitating neuropathy known as Guillain-Barré syndrome. Rapid and specific detection of these pathogens is very important for effective control and quick treatment of infection. Most of the diagnostics available for these organisms are time consuming and require technical expertise with expensive instruments and reagents to perform. Bacteriophages bind to their host specifically through their receptor binding proteins (RBPs), which can be exploited

Antibody to the gastric campylobacter-like organism ("Campylobacter pyloridis")--clinical correlations and distribution in the normal population.

Different cellular proteins of the gastric campylobacter-like organism (GCLO) were shown to be immunogenic for man. Antibodies to GCLO were detected in sera by both complement fixation and enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay. Antibody was found in 133 (52%) of 254 patients attending for gastroscopy. There was a high correlation between presence of antibody and a positive GCLO culture from the gastric mucus. Patients with normal endoscopic appearances, duodenal ulcer, duodenitis and oesophagitis had similar prevalences (c. 50%) of antibody. Only patients with endoscopically visible gastritis or

Colonization and infection of athymic and euthymic germfree mice by Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus.

Human clinical strains of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus colonized the gastrointestinal tracts of both athymic (nu/nu) and euthymic (+/nu) germfree mice (BALB/c). Viable Campylobacter spp. (10(9) to 10(10) CFU/g [dry weight] of cecum and colon contents) were isolated on day 3 after oral challenge, and similar large numbers of viable cells were evident at several intervals during a 10-month experiment. The stomachs and upper small intestines of nu/nu and +/nu mice that were monoassociated for 224 days with C. jejuni 45100 contained 3 to 4 logs fewer viable bacteria th

Modeling multidrug resistance in Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni isolated from swine at U.S. slaughter plants.

Antimicrobial-resistant and multidrug-resistant Campylobacter spp. poses a human health risk. A total of 1694 isolates from market hogs (1599 Campylobacter coli and 95 C. jejuni) and 965 isolates from sows (918 C. coli and 47 C. jejuni) that were isolated at US slaughter plants from 2013 to 2021 and tested for antimicrobial resistance were included in the analysis. Multidrug resistance (MDR) (resistance ≥ antimicrobial classes) was highest in C. coli isolates from market hogs (29.6%). C. jejuni isolates from both sources had lower MDR rates (8.4% for market hogs and 6.4% for sows). Isolates ba

Phenotypic and Molecular Patterns of Resistance among Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni Isolates, from Pig Farms.

The purpose of this research was to characterize the antibiotic resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. isolated from commercial farrow to finish farms in Greece, and analyze the relevant molecular resistance mechanisms among the resistant Campylobacter isolates. Susceptibility testing to five different classes of antibiotics was performed in 100 C. coli and 100 C. jejuni, previously isolated and identified. All isolates were found susceptible to meropenem. Very high rates of resistance were recorded for tetracyclines (84.5%), medium rates of resistance were recorded regarding quinolones (23

Efflux Pump Inhibitors, Alpha-Tocopherol and Aspirin: Role in Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli Fluoroquinolone Resistance.

This study aimed to investigate how efflux pump activity contributes to high fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistance in Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates and to evaluate the modulatory effects of α-tocopherol and aspirin on FQ phenotypic resistance profiles. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were obtained for different FQ agents following exposure to different efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs), including PaβN (50 μg/mL), which targets the cmeABC efflux system, and chlorpromazine (45 μg/mL) and verapamil (120 μg/mL), which target the MFS efflux system. The modulatory effects

Occurrence of virulence genes among Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates from domestic animals and children.

The presence of the flaA, cadF, cdtB and iam genes of Campylobacter spp. was determined with the PCR method. The materials to investigate were 56 C. jejuni and 23 C. coli strains isolated from clinical samples (children and domestic animals). It was found that all of the Campylobacter spp. isolates from children with diarrhoea and domestic animals had cadF gene, responsible for adherence. The flaA gene was present in all Campylobacter spp. isolates derived from children and cats. Occurrence of flaA gene was confirmed in 100% of C. jejuni strains obtained from dogs.
