Fungal infections are rising, with over 1.5 billion cases and more than 1 million deaths recorded each year. Among these, Candida infections are frequent in at-risk populations and the rapid development of drug resistance and tolerance contributes to their clinical persistence. Few antifungal drugs are available, and their efficacy is declining due to the environmental overuse and the expansion of multidrug-resistant species. One way to prolong their utility is by applying them in combination therapy. Here, we highlight recently described azole potentiators belonging to different categories: n

Prostatitis may present with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) attributable to acute and chronic bacterial infections (NIH Category I/II) or as asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis (NIH Category IV). Patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, (CP/CPPS, NIH Category III) may present with a wide range of symptoms resulting from varied etiology, however, seldom caused by fungal infections. Occasional case reports have been published on prostatitis due to Candida sp. We report a case of an elderly diabetic patient who underwent perurethral prostatic resection (TURP) for ben

Candida albicans infections range from superficial to systemic and are one of the leading causes of fungus-associated nosocomial infections. The innate immune responses during these various infection types differ, suggesting that the host environment plays a key role in modulating the host-pathogen interaction. In addition, C. albicans is able to remodel its cell wall in response to environmental conditions to evade host clearance mechanisms and establish infection in niches, such as the oral and vaginal mucosa. Phagocytes play a key role in clearing C. albicans, which is primarily mediated by

Fungal diseases are severe and have very high morbidity as well as up to 60% mortality for patients diagnosed with invasive fungal infection. In this review, in vitro and in vivo studies provided us with the insight into the role of Candida virulence factors that mediate their success as pathogens, such as: membrane and cell wall (CW) barriers, dimorphism, biofilm formation, signal transduction pathway, proteins related to stress tolerance, hydrolytic enzymes (e.g. proteases, lipases, haemolysins), and toxin production. The review characterized the virulence of clinically important C. albicans

The existence of the multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogenic fungus, Candida auris came to light in 2009. This particular organism is capable of causing nosocomial infections in immunecompromised persons. This pathogen is associated with consistent candidemia with high mortality rate and presents a serious global health threat. Whole genome sequence (WGS) investigation detected powerful phylogeographic Candida auris genotypes which are specialized to particular geological areas indicating dissemination of particular genotype among provinces. Furthermore, this organism frequently exhibits multidr

Infective endocarditis is a common complication in patients using intravenous drugs. Fungal endocarditis is a rare clinical entity and diagnosis are often delayed. Only a few cases of candida dubliniensis have been reported in the literature so far. These cases usually present in patients with a history of intravenous drug abuse. If a patient with valvular endocarditis continues to have fever despite antibiotics, then fungal infection should be suspected. Fungal endocarditis is usually treated surgically along with a prolonged course of antifungal treatment. We report an interesting case of a

The yeast Candida glabrata has emerged, second only to Candida albicans, to be one of the most frequently isolated fungi in clinical specimen from human. Its frequent resistance towards azole antifungal drugs and the high capacity to form biofilms on indwelling catheters of individual isolates render it an often difficult to treat pathogen. Hence, there is a notably increasing scientific and clinical interest in this species. This has led to the development of a variety of molecular tools for genetic modification, strain collections, and last but not least different approaches to analyse the p

AIMS: Due to the increase of severely immunocompromised patients, of invasive procedures including central intravascular catheters, and of the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the incidence of Candida bloodstream infections has risen intensely in the last decades. Candida bloodstream infection is a serious disease with high mortality. Optimized diagnostic and therapeutic management can improve outcome. Thus, the aim of our mini-review is to highlight important and often missed opportunities in the management of Candida bloodstream infection.
METHODS: We searched the published literature and

Fungal pneumonia is considered as one of the most serious forms of pneumonia, the number of which has recently increased despite the use of new antimycotic drugs in pulmonology. Specificity of pathogens and torpid current of pneumomycosis represent great difficulties for accurate diagnosis and delay the timely onset of therapy, exacerbating inflammatory changes. In this article we present a rare case of isolated infection of the lungs parenchyma with Candida albicans in the form of focal pneumonia of the right lung lower lobe complicated by a clotted pleurisy. Patient is eighteen-year-old youn

BACKGROUND: Focal laryngeal candidiasis is not reported widely and is very infrequently recognized clinically. This disease is rare and may occur after pulmonary, pharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis or as part of disseminated disease. It is also secondary to inhaled steroid therapy which is usually mild and has been reported in 10-15 percent of patients taking these medications.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we introduced a rare case of laryngeal candidiasis in a 79-year-old immunocompromised male presented with 17 months of progressive hoarseness. In video laryngoscopy a white, vegetat

Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen which is involved in infections ranging from superficial, mucosal to systemic candidiasis. It is the fourth most leading cause of death in nosocomial infections. Candidal infections are increasing at an alarming rate due to poor clinical management in hospital settings, more use of antibiotics, increased drug resistance, immunosuppression and host-pathogen related factors. There are various predisposing factors which can be immunologic or non-immunologic in origin that make a person susceptible to such infections. This review article e

Candiduria is rarely present in healthy individuals. In contrast, it is a common finding in hospitalized patients, especially those in intensive care units (ICUs) who often have multiple predisposing factors, including diabetes mellitus, indwelling urinary catheters, and exposure to antimicrobials. Candiduria occurs much less commonly in the community setting. In a majority of episodes in adult patients in critical care facilities candiduria represents colonization, and antifungal therapy is not required. However, the presence of yeast in the urine can be a sign of a disseminated infection. In

In many instances a report from the clinical laboratory indicating candiduria represents colonization or procurement contamination of the specimen and not invasive candidiasis. Even if infection of the urinary tract by Candida species can be confirmed, antifungal therapy is not always warranted. Further investigation may reveal predisposing factors, which if corrected or treated, result in the resolution of the infection. For those with symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs), the choice of antifungal agent will depend upon the clinical status of the patient, the site of infection, and the

The finding of candiduria in a patient with or without symptoms should be neither dismissed nor hastily treated, but requires a careful evaluation, which should proceed in a logical fashion. Symptoms of Candida pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, or epididymo-orchitis are little different from those of the same infections produced by other pathogens. Candiduria occurring in critically ill patients should initially be regarded as a marker for the possibility of invasive candidiasis. The first step in evaluation is to verify funguria by repeating the urinalysis and urine culture. Pyuria is a

Oral candidiasis (OC) is the most common mucosal manifestation of HIV infection. This workshop examined OC and other mycoses associated with HIV infection. Historically, blood CD4 cell numbers were the primary prognosticator for the development of OC. However, a study that statistically evaluated the predictive role of HIV viral load vs. CD4 cell counts revealed viral load to be a stronger predictor for OC. The role of biofilms and antifungal resistance in recalcitrant OC is unclear at present. In general, micro-organisms including yeasts in biofilms are more resistant to antifungals than thei

Candida infections in the immunocompromised patients represent a major therapeutic challenge. In immunocompromised host candidiasis can range from asymptomatic oral thrush to life-threatening candidemia. Invasive Candida infections parallel increase in the immunocompromised patient population and are characterized by high mortality. Diagnosis of Candida infections is difficult and is based on clinical picture, microbiological and histological examinations. Mainstay of treatment are systemic antimycotic agents (fluconazole, amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole and caspofungin). Empirical

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, total atrophic tongue has been due to nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B12, folic acid, or iron deficiencies, and partial atrophic tongue has been well known as median rhomboid glossitis or geographic tongue. The other cause of atrophic tongue is oral candidiasis.
METHODS: Forty patients with atrophic change of the tongue were examined on a relation to candidiasis. All of them complained of tongue pain on spicy or hot diet. Laboratory examinations included blood examination for diabetes and anemia, culture test and direct cytologic examination. The intensit

Onycholysis caused by Candida krusei is rare. A 21 years old male patient presented with grayish discolouration and elevation of all fingernails since one year. Patient was refractory to treatment with fluconazole. Potassium hydroxide preparation of subungual debris revealed fungal elements. Growth on Sabouraud dextrose agar was identified by cultural characteristics, morphotyping, microscopy and biochemical tests as Candida krusei. The isolate was resistant to fluconazole and amphotericin-B but susceptible to nystatin and clotrimazole. Patient responded well to clotrimazole and terbinafine.
