Candida auris emerged as a pathogen resistant to multiple antifungal and has been associated with nosocomial outbreaks with high transmission capacity between hospitalized individuals. C. auris was first described in 2009, after being isolated from the external ear canal discharge of a patient in Japan. The difficulty in identification, incorrect use of antifungal drugs, and treatment failure are causes of high mortality. Since then, C. auris has been increasingly reported from East Asia to North America, with substantial fatalities and misidentification. This review aims at describing the epi

Candida auris is a fungal pathogen that has recently emerged as a global threat to public health. It was first described in Japan in 2009 and has since been reported in 17 countries on five continents. This case report describes the first reported case of multidrug-resistant C. auris in Canada. In May 2017, a 64-year-old individual was evaluated for chronic otitis externa. Past medical history included a recent hospitalization in India for elective oral surgery that was complicated by an odontogenic brain abscess. Upon return to Canada, the individual was admitted to a hospital for neurosurgic

Candida auris is a recently described rare agent of fungemia. It is notable for its antifungal resistance. A total of 15 C. auris isolates, originating from seven cases of fungemia, three cases of diabetic gangrenous foot, and one case of bronchopneumonia from a tertiary care hospital in south India, were investigated. All of the 15 isolates were identified by sequencing and 14 of these along with 12 C. auris isolates previously reported from two hospitals in Delhi, north India, two each from Japan and Korea were genotyped by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). In vitro antifungal s

In this study, we investigated the interactions between Candida auris and C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata, and C. krusei in mixed infections. Initially, these interactions were studied qualitatively and quantitatively in dual-species biofilms formed in vitro. The MTT assays, determination of the total CFU/mL, and SEM analysis showed that C. auris interacted differentially with the other Candida spp. during the dual-species biofilm formation. Depending on the stage of the biofilm development, C. auris was found to be a particularly dominant species during its interaction with the C. kru

Candida species are now considered global threats by the CDC and WHO. Candida auris specifically is on the critical pathogen threat list along with Candida albicans. In addition, it is not uncommon to find Candida spp. in a mixed culture with bacterial organisms, especially Staphylococcus aureus producing polymicrobial infections. To eradicate these organisms from the environment and from patient surfaces, surface agents such as chlorhexidine (CHD) and Puracyn are used. Biofilm disrupters (BDs) are novel agents with a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity and have been used in the managemen

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen associated with invasive infections and high mortality. In Korea, C. auris infections have historically been caused predominantly by Clade II isolates; however, recent reports of invasive infections due to Clade I indicate an evolving epidemiology with potential implications for antifungal resistance and treatment strategies. To provide practical guidance for clinicians, we developed evidence-based recommendations for the management of C. auris infections in Korea through review of current international guidelines and available e

BACKGROUND: Candidemia is a common complication in hospitalized and critically ill patients. Nationwide United States (U.S.) data on candidemia risk factors, species, antifungal resistance, and outcomes remain limited. Our objective was to describe candidemia trends from 2015-2024 and identify risk factors for Candida auris candidemia.
METHODS: Retrospective study using the Epic Cosmos database. We analyzed trends in candidemia risk factors and outcomes. 30-day mortality was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression adjusted for age, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index, COVID-19-related hosp

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is a widely distributed yeast that is considered a dangerous pathogen, with reported mortality rates ranging from 30% to 60%. This yeast shows a high level of resistance to several antifungal agents commonly used to treat systemic infections. The pathogen persists on contaminated surfaces, tolerates hospital-grade disinfectants, survives desiccation and spreads easily through direct or indirect contact. It has been reported on all five continents and is increasingly prevalent in Europe.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution and antifungal susceptibility/resistance

Candida auris is an opportunistic yeast causing infections in vulnerable patients leading to high mortality ratio. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designated it as a pathogen of concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed it in priority list of fungal pathogens. C. auris has the ability to spread very fast inside the hospital environment and cause outbreaks worldwide. It has a very high affinity toward skin colonization, especially in the areas like axilla and groin. Based on whole genome sequencing it is classified into five clades. Each clade has differen

The emerging Candidozyma auris (formerly known as Candida auris, C. auris) has caused several outbreaks globally. While several studies explored the resistant biofilm formed by C. auris, little is known regarding the cells dispersed following biofilm formation. Herein, I investigated and characterized the cells dispersed from C. auris biofilms. Cells dispersed from biofilm developed in 96 well plate were isolated and counted. The antifungal susceptibility testing showed that the dispersed cells display similar antifungal susceptibility as the parent planktonic cells, except amphotericin B. Gen

A central tenet of biology is that protein structure mediates the sequence-function relationship. Recently, there has been excitement about the promise of advances in protein structure modeling to generate hypotheses about sequence-structure-function relationships based on successes with controlled benchmarks. Here, we leverage structural similarity to identify rapidly evolving proteasome assembly chaperones and characterize their function in the emerging fungal pathogen Candida auris. Despite the large sequence divergence, we demonstrate conservation of structure and function across hundreds

Candida auris, an emerging fungus that exhibits a unique transmission ability, causes large healthcare-associated outbreaks on 6 continents since first reported in 2009. Most isolates have acquired fluconazole resistance, and resistance to other agents/classes emerges during drug exposure. The emergence of C auris infections raises serious concerns for public health. Systematic elaboration on clinical treatment and prevention of C auris infections is rare. We aim to summarize the research progress on the risk factors, clinical signs, drug treatment and prevention of C auris infections.

Candida auris causes hospital outbreaks and life-threatening infections, is recognized as a global health threat, and was designated a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the data on C. auris fungemias are quite scarce and limited to small retrospective case series, this international study aimed to prospectively assess patient characteristics, outcomes, and therapeutic approaches. The study, conducted through the Infectious Diseases-International Research Initiative (ID-IRI) platform, involved 34 referral centers. Patients with C. auris candidemia were prospectivel

Candida auris is an emerging Candida sp. that has rapidly spread all over the world. The evidence regarding its origin and emerging resistance is still unclear. The severe infection caused by this species results in significant mortality and morbidity among the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. The development of drug resistance is the major factor associated with the therapeutic failure of existing antifungal agents. Previous studies have addressed the antifungal resistance profile and drug discovery for C. auris. However, complete coverage of this information in a single investigati

Candida auris is a widely distributed, highly lethal, multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen. It was first identified in 2009 when it was isolated from fluid drained from the external ear canal of a patient in Japan. Since then, it has caused infectious outbreaks in over 45 countries, with mortality rates approaching 60%. Drug resistance is common in this species, with a large proportion of isolates displaying fluconazole resistance and nearly half are resistant to two or more antifungal drugs. In this review, we describe the drug resistance mechanism of C. auris and potential small-molecule drug
