Using 13C to Quantify Phloem Transport on Tall Plants in the Field.

Phloem transport dynamics play a crucial role in understanding the movement of photoassimilates within plants, particularly in tall species, where tracing carbon allocation and monitoring transport velocities present unique challenges. The difference in time lags between a labeling pulse of 13CO2 of the foliage and the appearance of labeled C in the respiration at different locations along the stem of a tall plant is used to estimate at which velocities the isotope tracer, i.e., the labeled carbohydrates, are transported in the phloem sap. Here, we describe a method for pulse labeling tall pla

Dietary resilience among hunter-gatherers of Tierra del Fuego: Isotopic evidence in a diachronic perspective.

The native groups of Patagonia have relied on a hunter-gatherer economy well after the first Europeans and North Americans reached this part of the world. The large exploitation of marine mammals (i.e., seals) by such allochthonous groups has had a strong impact on the local ecology in a way that might have forced the natives to adjust their subsistence strategies. Similarly, the introduction of new foods might have changed local diet. These are the premises of our isotopic-based analysis. There is a large set of paleonutritional investigations through isotopic analysis on Fuegians groups, how

Tracing Soil CO2 Fluxes under Drying-Rewetting Cycles: Isotopic Insights from an Automatic Soil Incubation System.

Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of droughts and heavy rainfall events globally, with significant consequences on the terrestrial carbon cycle. One of the most critical yet highly variable components of the carbon cycle is the soil CO2 pulse triggered by precipitation events in dryland ecosystems. To examine the processes underlying the soil CO2 pulse under changing precipitation patterns, we developed a unique Online Automatic Soil Incubation System (OASIS) that allows (1) accurate manipulation of drying and rewetting regimes; (2) continuous monitoring of soi

Silver-Mediated Deuterium Labelling of Quinones and Related Compounds by Hydrogen Isotope Exchange With D2O.

We report a silver-catalyzed hydrogen isotope exchange reaction that enables direct deuteration of quinones and related scaffolds, using readily available D2O as an isotopic source. The homogeneous Ag2SO4 system provides high isotopic enrichment, up to 99%, with excellent regioselectivity across diverse frameworks, including substituted para-naphthoquinones, anthraquinones, coumarins, quinolinones, and chromones. We also developed a heterogeneous version of the same reaction by supporting silver nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes. The nanohybrid catalyst maintains high performance and allows fo

One-step synthesis of carbon-13-labeled globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), an internal standard for biomarker analysis of Fabry disease.

Globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3) is a well-established biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis of Fabry disease. This biomarker is measured in biological samples by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using an internal standard. The ideal internal standard is a variant of lyso-Gb3 substituted with heavy isotopes, but the total synthesis of such a compound is very labor intensive. In this report, we describe a simple, one-step synthesis of lyso-Gb3 labeled with carbon-13 in all of the galactosyl carbons.

The contribution of seagrass carbon to coastal marine ecosystems around the island of Mauritius, Western Indian Ocean.

Understanding the role of marine vegetation in shaping coastal carbon dynamics and supporting productivity is essential for robust ecological and socio-economic assessments and effective policy development. Our study employed stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate the importance of seagrass carbon as a source of nutrition to important invertebrates spanning different trophic levels (i.e., planktonic, filter-feeding and grazing) around the island of Mauritius. Isotope mixing models confirmed high levels of assimilation of seagrass carbon across three trophic levels (dietary prop

Determining the Authenticity of Ghanaian Honeys Using Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA).

Honey is a high-value food product that is vulnerable to adulteration with exogenous sugars, posing challenges for food authenticity and consumer protection. This study applied Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (SIRA) to assess the authenticity of honey collected from three major honey-producing regions of Ghana (Volta, Bono and Bono East). A total of 28 honey samples were analysed by elemental analysis-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) to obtain carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) and sulphur (δ34S) isotope composition. Honey authenticity was evaluated according to AOAC Official Method 998.12

Purification and Preconcentration of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) by HPLC Fraction Collection for Isotope Analysis.

Stable isotope data are increasingly used for environmental forensics and source apportionment studies. The latest chemical pollutant landscape being explored using environmental forensics is per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Due to a variety of methodological difficulties, isotopic analysis of PFAS for environmental forensic purposes is in its nascent stages. In a previous study, the authors presented the analytical methodology for measuring the stable carbon isotopic composition of a model PFAS: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This study presents the complementary method for the pur

Pyridine-based strategies towards nitrogen isotope exchange and multiple isotope incorporation.

Isotopic labeling is at the core of health and life science applications such as nuclear imaging, metabolomics and plays a central role in drug development. The rapid access to isotopically labeled organic molecules is a sine qua non condition to support these societally vital areas of research. Based on a rationally driven approach, this study presents an innovative solution to access labeled pyridines by a nitrogen isotope exchange reaction based on a Zincke activation strategy. The technology conceptualizes an opportunity in the field of isotope labeling. 15N-labeling of pyridines and other

Reaction Pathways over ZnZrO2‑Based Catalysts and Catalytic Sorbents.

Reactive capture and conversion (RCC) is a process intensification approach that integrates CO2 capture and hydrogenation within a single unit, removing the CO2 purification and storage steps of traditional process flow schemes. This alters the catalytic step from a traditional steady-state (SS) flow process to a transient capture and conversion cycle, which could lead to product distributions distinct from those observed in conventional SS experiments. Such differences are investigated in the combined capture and hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol over a ZnZrO2 catalyst and a ZnZrO2

Contrasting Spatial and Seasonal Trends of Methylmercury Exposure Pathways of Arctic Seabirds: Combination of Large-Scale Tracking and Stable Isotopic Approaches.

Despite the limited direct anthropogenic mercury (Hg) inputs in the circumpolar Arctic, elevated concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) are accumulated in Arctic marine biota. However, the MeHg production and bioaccumulation pathways in these ecosystems have not been completely unraveled. We measured Hg concentrations and stable isotope ratios of Hg, carbon, and nitrogen in the feathers and blood of geolocator-tracked little auk Alle alle from five Arctic breeding colonies. The wide-range spatial mobility and tissue-specific Hg integration times of this planktivorous seabird allowed the explor

Unraveling the Origin of Atmospheric Soluble Iron during Asian Dust Storms.

East Asian dust storms are a critical source of iron (Fe) to the North Pacific Ocean, where soluble Fe (Fes) supports marine primary productivity, playing an important role in global carbon cycling and ultimately influencing the climate. However, the relative contributions of natural mineral dust versus those of anthropogenic sources to Fes remain unclear. In this study, stable isotope composition (δ56Fe) of total Fe (FeT) and Fes, together with mineralogical (STEM) and geochemical analysis for PM2.5 and PM10 size fractions of atmospheric particles collected during two dust storm events in Tia

Integrated hyperspectral-multispectral mapping of shear-associated hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization validated by geochemical and isotopic data, southern Arabian Shield.

Shear-zone-hosted gold systems are widespread in the southern Arabian Shield, yet the geometric and genetic links between deformation architecture, hydrothermal alteration, and ore-forming fluids remain insufficiently constrained at the scale of individual structural corridors. This study integrates PRISMA, ASTER, and Sentinel-2 remote sensing data with structural analysis, petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, fire assay, and C-O stable isotope data to develop a deformation-controlled mineralization model for the Wadi Al Awja district, Asir terrane. Rock weathering can counteract river CO2 emissions induced by permafrost thaw.

Climate-induced permafrost thaw unlocks large stores of organic carbon that are mineralized and emitted as carbon dioxide (CO2) from rivers to the atmosphere1. Concurrently, warming and permafrost thaw can increase mineral weathering rates, thus affecting the release and sequestration of inorganic carbon2-4. Yet how these biological and geological carbon cycles interact and jointly affect CO2 dynamics (emission compared with drawdown) in permafrost rivers remains unknown5. Here we combine CO2 emissions, organic and inorganic solute concentrations, dual carbon isotopes (δ13C-Δ14C) and geochemic

In situ temperature jump high-frequency dynamic nuclear polarization experiments: enhanced sensitivity in liquid-state NMR spectroscopy.

We describe an experiment, in situ temperature jump dynamic nuclear polarization (TJ-DNP), that is demonstrated to enhance sensitivity in liquid-state NMR experiments of low-gamma spins--13C, 15N, etc. The approach consists of polarizing a sample at low temperature using high-frequency (140 GHz) microwaves and a biradical polarizing agent and then melting it rapidly with a pulse of 10.6 microm infrared radiation, followed by observation of the NMR signal in the presence of decoupling. In the absence of polarization losses due to relaxation, the enhancement should be epsilon+ = epsilon(T(obs)/T

CN- secondary ions form by recombination as demonstrated using multi-isotope mass spectrometry of 13C- and 15N-labeled polyglycine.

We have studied the mechanism of formation CN- secondary ions under Cs+ primary ion bombardment. We have synthesized 13C and 15N labeled polyglycine samples with the distance between the two labels and the local atomic environment of the 13C label systematically varied. We have measured four masses in parallel: 12C, 13C, and two of 12C14N, 13C14N, 12C15N, and 13C15N. We have calculated the 13C/12C isotope ratio, and the different combinations of the CN isotope ratios (27CN/26CN, 28CN/27CN, and 28CN/26CN). We have measured a high 13C15N- secondary ion current from the 13C and 15N labeled polygl

Diverse livestock management strategies sustained the emerging chalcolithic town of Tepe Farukhabad, Iran.

Pastoral economies were critical to the development of cities in Late Chalcolithic southwest Asia; yet, pastoral strategies in small settlements, particularly outside of the Mesopotamian heartland, remain understudied. This study uses carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope analyses of caprine molars to investigate herd management in the Early Uruk to Late Uruk occupational phases at Tepe Farukhabad, in lowland southwest Iran. In both phases, a pronounced separation in carbon values indicates that herds accessed two discrete environments. One set of animals was likely foddered over the winter

Old Soil Organic Matter Has a Low Carbon:Nitrogen Ratio-A Global Meta-Analysis About 14C and Soil Stoichiometry.

Soil organic matter (SOM) persistence and the SOM carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio determine long-term nitrogen (N) sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems. Yet, the question of how SOM persistence is related to the C:N ratio of SOM is still not fully resolved. Based on a global dataset on Δ14C in soils, I tested the hypothesis that SOM persistence is negatively correlated with the C:N ratio because N is enriched relative to carbon (C) as SOM ages. The results of this study demonstrate that the soil Δ14C decreased with decreasing C:N ratio, indicating that old, persistent SOM has a low C:N ratio

Isotope Measurements of Phloem-Transported Organic Matter: Tools to Obtain Information on Gas Exchange Physiology and Transport Processes, and to Better Understand Tree Ring Archives.

Stable isotope analysis of phloem-transported organic matter provides valuable insights into plant physiological processes. This paper reviews methodologies for phloem sampling suitable for isotope measurements, including phloem bleeding from bark incisions, exudation into aqueous solutions, and centrifugation techniques. I highlight critical considerations for preventing sample contamination and degradation across these methods. I demonstrate how phloem isotope measurements offer crown-integrated information on gas exchange physiology, connecting stomatal conductance and photosynthetic assimi
