Clarifying the cardiovascular morphology and associated abnormalities in patients with tricuspid Atresia using multidetector computed tomography angiography.

The present study sought to assess the intracardiac morphology and associated cardiovascular anomalies in patients with tricuspid atresia using multidetector CT angiography. CT angiography datasets of all patients diagnosed with tricuspid atresia at our institution between November 2014 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. The type of tricuspid atresia and associated cardiovascular structural anomalies detected on CT angiography were evaluated. Tricuspid atresia was identified in 404 patients (276 males [68.3%]; mean age at diagnosis: 4.54 ± 6.61 years [range: 9 months-40 years]).

25-year follow-up on marked ventricular repolarization abnormalities in athletes: Long-term outcomes and cardiovascular prognosis.

BACKGROUND: The presence of ventricular repolarization abnormalities (VRA) in young asymptomatic athletes is rare and may represent initial expression of underlying ongoing cardiomyopathy, increasing risk of sudden cardiac death. This study aims to evaluate the long-term prognosis of VRAs in this specific population. METHODS: A cohort of 28 young asymptomatic Caucasian male athletes with VRA on 12‑leads electrocardiogram (ECG), initially underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and treadmill test between1990-2000 which excluded cardiac diseases. The same tests where repeated between 202

Patients with hip fracture and total hip arthroplasty surgery differ in anthropometric, but not cardiovascular screening abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: With the rising number of hip surgeries, simple and cost-effective tools for surgery risk assessment are warranted. The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) may not only provide critical insights into the general frailty of patients with hip surgery, but also allow for better differentiation of health profiles in different hip surgery groups. Using HRV analysis, the present study compared cardiovascular as well as anthropometric parameters between patients with hip surgery, the hip fracture surgery group (HFS) and the total hip arthroplasty group (THA), and a control group. Night-time systolic blood pressure and subclinical cerebrovascular disease: the Cardiovascular Abnormalities and Brain Lesions (CABL) study.

AIMS: Although ambulatory blood pressure (BP) is a better predictor of cardiovascular outcomes than office BP, its association with subclinical cerebrovascular disease is not clarified. We investigated the associations of office and ambulatory BP values with subclinical cerebrovascular disease in a population based, predominantly elderly cohort without prior stroke. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight hundred and twenty-eight participants underwent 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM), 2D echocardiography and brain magnetic resonance imaging in the Cardiac Abnormalities and Brain Lesion (CABL) study.

Congenital heart diseases and cardiovascular abnormalities in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: From well-established knowledge to new frontiers.

Congenital heart diseases (CHDs) and cardiovascular abnormalities are one of the pillars of clinical diagnosis of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) and still represent the main cause of mortality in the affected children. In the past 30 years, much progress has been made in describing the anatomical patterns of CHD, in improving their diagnosis, medical treatment, and surgical procedures for these conditions, as well as in understanding the underlying genetic and developmental mechanisms. However, further studies are still needed to better determine the true prevalence of CHDs in 22q11.2DS

Complete trisomy 9 with unusual phenotypic associations: Dandy-Walker malformation, cleft lip and cleft palate, cardiovascular abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Trisomy 9 is a rare chromosomal abnormality usually associated with first-trimester miscarriage; few fetuses survive until the second trimester. We report two new cases of complete trisomy 9 that both present unusual phenotypic associations, and we analyze the genetic pathway involved in this chromosomal abnormality. CASE REPORT: The first fetus investigated showed Dandy-Walker malformation, cleft lip, and cleft palate) at the second trimester scan. Cardiovascular abnormalities were characterized by a right-sided, U-shaped aortic arch associated with a ventricular septal defect (VS

T-wave abnormalities are a better predictor of cardiovascular mortality than ST depression on the resting electrocardiogram.

BACKGROUND: ST depression and T-wave amplitude abnormalities are known to be independent predictors of cardiovascular (CV) death, but a direct comparison between them has not been described. METHODS: Analyses were performed on the first electrocardiogram (ECG) digitally recorded on 46,950 consecutive patients at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center since 1987. Females and patients with electrocardiograms exhibiting bundle branch block, left ventricular hypertrophy, electronic pacing, diagnostic Q waves, or Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome were excluded, leaving 31,074 male patients for

Associations between retinal microvascular abnormalities and declining renal function in the elderly population: the Cardiovascular Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular abnormalities in the kidney are common histopathologic findings in individuals with chronic kidney disease or renal failure. These abnormalities may represent one manifestation of ongoing systemic microvascular damage. We hypothesized that retinal microvascular abnormalities, when present, would be associated with progressive renal dysfunction in elderly individuals. METHODS: The Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) is a prospective, multicenter, cohort study initiated in 1989 designed to examine cardiovascular risk factors, morbidity, and mortality in elderly Americans

Identification of the increased frequency of cardiovascular abnormalities associated with mitral valve prolapse by two-dimensional echocardiography.

Two-dimensional echocardiography (2-D echo) was performed in 86 consecutive patients with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and in 25 normal subjects. In normal subjects, mitral leaflet thickness was 3.5 +/- 0.8 mm (mean +/- standard deviation) and the mitral leaflet thickness to aortic wall thickness ratio was 1.0 +/- 0.2. Patients with MVP were separated into 2 groups: those with normal mitral thickness (less than or equal to mean + 2 SD observed in normal subjects, i.e., less than or equal to 5.1 mm) and normal mitral thickness to aortic wall thickness ratio (less than or equal to mean + 2 SD obs

Abnormal Plasma/Serum Magnesium, Copper, and Zinc Concentrations Associate with the Future Development of Cardiovascular Diseases.

Background/Objectives: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs)-such as acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure-are critical endpoints in the clinical research. The existing research has shown metal ions are important regulators of cardiovascular functioning, and defective metal handling may be associated with an increased risk of CVD. This study examines the association of the plasma/serum levels of magnesium, copper, and zinc with MACE incidence and the prevalence of circulatory system diseases, by us

The Africans in America study demonstrates that subclinical cardiovascular risk differs by etiology of abnormal glucose tolerance.

Abnormal-glucose tolerance (Abnl-GT) is due to an imbalance between β-cell function and insulin resistance (IR) and is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD). In sub-Saharan Africa, β-cell failure is emerging as an important cause of Abnl-GT (Abnl-GT-β-cell-failure). Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume and hyperlipidemia are major contributors to CVD risk when Abnl-GT is due to IR (Abnl-GT-IR). Yet, the CVD profile associated with Abnl-GT-β-cell failure is unknown. Therefore, our goals in 450 African-born Blacks (Male: 65%; Age: 39 ± 10 years; BMI 28 ± 5 kg/m2), living in America

Abnormal upregulation of cardiovascular disease biomarker PLA2G7 induced by proinflammatory macrophages in COVID-19 patients.

High rate of cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Importantly, CVD, as one of the comorbidities, could also increase the risks of the severity of COVID-19. Here we identified phospholipase A2 group VII (PLA2G7), a well-studied CVD biomarker, as a hub gene in COVID-19 though an integrated hypothesis-free genomic analysis on nasal swabs (n = 486) from patients with COVID-19. PLA2G7 was further found to be predominantly expressed by proinflammatory macrophages in lungs emerging with progression of COVID-19. In the validation stage

A randomised trial of salsalate for insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk factors in persons with abnormal glucose tolerance.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Chronic sub-acute inflammation contributes to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. High doses of salicylate reduce inflammation, glucose and triacylglycerols, and may improve insulin sensitivity, suggesting therapeutic potential in impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance. This trial aimed to evaluate the effect of salsalate vs placebo on insulin resistance and glycaemia in impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance. METHODS: We conducted a 12 week, two-centre, randomised, placebo-controlled study to evalua

Detection of cardiovascular abnormalities in the nursery of a general hospital in the Amazon region: correlation with potential risk factors.

Congenital heart diseases have been studied much more extensively in children than in neonates. In this study, we report on the findings from 57 neonates seen from June of 1995 through June 1996 in the nursery of a large public hospital in Belém, Pará, Brazil. All were routinely examined by a paediatrician just after birth, and, when indicated, these babies were referred to the cardiology unit of our Hospital for assessment by a paediatric cardiologist. Most of the diagnoses were made by means of Doppler and cross-sectional echocardiography with color flow mapping. Several abnormalities of the

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Provides Evidence of Abnormal Myocardial Strain and Primary Cardiomyopathy in Marfan syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Marfan syndrome is an autosomal-dominant genetic disorder caused by mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene. The condition is a connective tissue disease that frequently involves the cardiovascular system. The existence of a primary cardiomyopathy in Marfan syndrome, however, is controversial. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of left ventricular dysfunction with both transthoracic echocardiography and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in a cohort of Marfan syndrome patients and to investigate patterns of myocardial strain across the cohort. METHODS: We used

Clinical aspects of the relationship between oral contraceptives, abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism, and the development of cardiovascular disease.

Although large epidemiologic studies indicated no difference in the frequency of diabetes mellitus in nonusers and everusers of high-dose combination oral contraceptives, other studies had shown an increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance in current users, which is estimated to be roughly twice as frequent as that in nonusers. Women at risk of developing impaired glucose tolerance while receiving high-dose oral contraceptives either had previous gestational diabetes mellitus or were older, obese, or had a positive family history of diabetes mellitus. The tendency to decreased glucose toler
