Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become one of the most commonly performed abdominal surgeries worldwide. Several anatomic variations and congenital malformations in the gallbladder and biliary anatomy have been described. We reported the case of a middle-aged woman who presented with jaundice and abdominal pain. Her laboratory investigations revealed an elevated bilirubin level (mainly the direct component). The patient showed an improvement in the clinical and laboratory parameters after conservative management. Then, the patient was prepared for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy which revealed

Youssef's syndrome has been first described in 1957 as an atypical presentation of a vesicouterine fistula after lower segment Cesarean section. It is characterized by a triad of cyclic hematuria, amenorrhea, and absence of urinary incontinence, which is usually found in other forms of genitourinary fistulas. We describe a case report of a woman who developed a delayed Youssef's syndrome 3 months after her third Cesarean section. She was initially post-operatively treated conservatively and successfully for a bladder leakage through the wound with a bladder catheter for 1 month, and 2 months l

A castrated, mixed-breed, 10-year-old male dog developed a skin fistula from a ruptured periorbital swelling on the right eye; the patient was successfully treated with dacryoendoscope-guided cannulation using a nasolacrimal tube. On presentation, computed tomography with concurrent dacryocystography (CT-DCG) revealed obstruction of the right nasolacrimal duct and abnormal flow of contrast agents towards the root of tooth 109 at the right maxillary bone; however, the origin of the fistula remained unclear on CT-DCG. Dacryoendoscopy was used to confirm the physical association between the fistu

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is characterised by the overproduction of parathyroid hormone (PTH) due to parathyroid hyperplasia, adenoma or carcinoma and results in hypercalcaemia and a raised or inappropriately normal PTH. Symptoms of hypercalcaemia occur in 20% of patients and include fatigue, nausea, constipation, depression, renal impairment and cardiac arrythmias. In the most severe cases, uraemia, coma or cardiac arrest can result. Primary hyperparathyroidism in pregnancy is rare, with a reported incidence of 1%. Maternal and fetal/neonatal complications are estimated to occur in 6

BACKGROUND: Leiomyomas are benign tumors observed mainly in adult women. The retroperitoneum is a rare location for leiomyomas; almost 100 cases have been reported. Because retroperitoneal leiomyomas are paucisymptomatic and the tumor size at diagnosis is relatively large, surgical management is challenging. Regular follow-up is required because recurrence and malignant sarcomatous transformation have been described in a few cases.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 52-year-old North African woman with a 22-cm retroperitoneal leiomyoma. A preoperative embolization was performed 2 days b

Accidental fire can occur with upper airway injury and can be fatal if inappropriately managed. Effective communication between the anesthetic and the surgical teams can reduce the risk of such an adverse event. Understanding the interaction between fuel, oxidizer, and ignition source in an airway fire may also reduce the incidence. The literature on upper airway thermal injury has focused on prevention and intraoperative management, but few studies have described postburn management. In this report, we describe the intraoperative occurrence of an airway fire during a surgical tracheostomy and

The approvals of six checkpoint inhibitory antibodies since 2011 have established immunotherapy for cancer as a fifth treatment modality after chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and targeted therapy. Long-lasting responses have been observed in melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, renal cell cancer, and head and neck cancer, to name a few, and more approvals for these drugs undoubtedly are coming in the near future. The application of checkpoint inhibitors has expanded well beyond melanoma, and, with wider use, the management of the immune-related adverse events (irAEs) that accompany these dr

Most drugs that act on the central nervous system (CNS) require dose titration to avoid withdrawal syndrome. Tizanidine withdrawal syndrome is caused by adrenergic discharge due to its α2-agonist mechanism and is characterized by hypertension, reflex tachycardia, hypertonicity, and anxiety. Although tizanidine withdrawal syndrome is mentioned as a potential side effect of cessation, it is not common and there have been few reports. We present the case of a 31-year-old woman with tizanidine withdrawal syndrome after discontinuing medication prescribed for a muscle contracture (tizanidine). She

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this case report was to present the successful orthodontic treatment of an adolescent girl with cherubism.
METHODS: The patient began treatment after puberty. Necessary extractions were performed, and she had full-arch treatment of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. A series of archwires was used in a timely manner to create an adequate arch form and close the interdental spaces. Once treatment was completed, retention was ensured with a maxillary spring aligner and mandibular fixed retainer.
RESULTS: Maxillary alignment and an adequate arch form were achie

INTRODUCTION: Congenital meningoencephaloceles represent a rare clinical entity, with its frequency being around 1 out of 4000-5000 live births. They usually present as a midline mass and the differential diagnosis includes dermoids, encephaloceles, and gliomas. Although the standard coronal approach with frontal craniotomy and pericranial flap has been considered the preferred method for several years, it is associated with risks and prolonged hospitalization. The endoscopic procedure is gaining ground and we are aiming to present our experience from five cases that were treated endoscopicall

Purpose: A case report of a patient who presented with an acute onset, fluctuating atrioventricular (AV) block and was diagnosed with Lyme carditis is presented. Summary: A 55-year-old man with progressively worsening generalized malaise, flu-like symptoms, dyspnea on exertion, and near syncope was admitted with bradycardia (heart rate was between 20 and 30 beats per minute upon admission). He endorsed having several tick bites after which he developed erythema migrans on his arm and abdomen. An electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed a second-degree AV block, fluctuating between Mobitz type I and Mo

BACKGROUND: Host immunity plays an important role in prevention of disease as is evident by the increased incidence of Tuberculosis (TB) in immuno-compromised population of HIV infected, diabetes inflicted, immune-suppressant therapy and elderly people. Rising incidence of antibiotic resistance has led to resurgence of TB of epidemic proportions. Integrated treatment with add on homeopathy in addition to anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT) appears to improve outcome in TB. The intervention has been integrated treatment with homeopathy regime, which is using a patient specific, disease specific a
