Brunner's gland adenomas in two cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Two cats, aged 13.5 and 14 years, presented with duodenal masses ultimately diagnosed as Brunner's gland (BG) adenomas. In the first cat, the lesion was a firm, pale tan, proximal duodenal polyp adjacent to the major duodenal papilla that was composed histologically of a well demarcated, expansile mass of well-differentiated BGs separated by fibrovascular septa and few adipocytes. This patient was euthanized for otitis-related vestibular signs, and the clinical significance of the duodenal polyp is unknown. The second cat presented with a 6-month history of vomiting. This

Malassezia dermatitis in dogs and cats.

Malassezia are members of the mycobiome of dogs and cats. In the presence of an underlying disease, these yeasts can proliferate, attach to the skin or mucosa to induce a secondary Malassezia dermatitis, otitis externa or paronychia. Since allergic dermatitis is one of the most common underlying causes, diagnostic investigation for allergy is often indicated. Cats may suffer from various other underlying problems, especially where Malassezia dermatitis is generalised. Malassezia dermatitis in dogs and cats is chronic, relapsing and pruritic. Direct cytology from dermatological lesions and the

The Parasites of Cats in Türkiye.

Cats have an important and different place due to their close relationships with humans. Since most of the parasites they carry are zoonotic, it is important to detect them. According to the research, Dipylidium caninum, Joyeuxiella pasqualei, Toxocara spp., Toxascaris leonina, Giardia spp., Isospora spp., and Toxoplasma sp. were found to be higher in cats compared to other parasites. It has been determined that scabies and flea infestations are common as ectoparasites. This review aims to present the reported parasites and their prevalence rates in cats in Türkiye.

Manifestations of hypertensive encephalopathy in cats.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertensive encephalopathy in cats is an important entity but is underestimated in clinical practice. This could be explained, in part, by non-specific clinical signs. The objective of this study was to characterise the clinical manifestations of hypertensive encephalopathy in cats. METHODS: Cats with systemic hypertension (SHT) recognised by routine screening, associated with underlying predisposing disease or a clinical presentation suggestive of SHT (neurological or non-neurological), were prospectively enrolled over a 2-year period. Confirmation of SHT was based on at least t

Primary nervous system lymphoma in cats.

Here we characterize the neuroanatomic distribution, neuropathology, and immunophenotype of 10 cases of primary nervous system lymphoma in cats. Cases were retrospectively searched from 2 academic institutions. Selected cases were reviewed and subjected to immunohistochemistry (IHC) for CD3, CD20, and Pax5. The mean age of affected cats was 9.1 y, and no sex or breed predilection was observed. The most common clinical sign was ataxia (8 cases). Gross changes reported in 8 cases consisted of white-to-tan masses (7 cases) or swelling (1 case) within the neuroparenchyma (5 cases) or epidural spac

Role of cats in human toxocarosis.

Toxocara cati, the feline ascarid, is ubiquitous in domestic cats globally and is increasingly recognised as an important zoonotic species. In the definitive host, infections with the adult ascarid usually do not present any clinical signs; if clinical signs do appear, it is usually in kittens infected with T. cati, especially by the transmammary route. Diseases may include cachexia, a pot-bellied appearance, respiratory disorders, diarrhoea, vomiting, among other signs, and these may present as early as 3 weeks of age. However, infections with Toxocara spp. larvae in paratenic hosts (includin

Pythiosis in cats in northeastern Brazil.

The epidemiological, clinical and anatomopathological aspects of pythiosis in cats in northeastern Brazil are described. From January 2000 to December 2018 the Laboratory of Animal Pathology of the Federal University of Campina Grande received 1928 tissue samples of cats, three of which were diagnosed as pythiosis. Grossly, the cats showed a multinodular mass in the oral cavity associated with facial deformity (case 1), a large multinodular mass thickening the jejunum wall (case 2), and an ulcerated nodule in the skin at the base of the tail (case 3). Histologically, pyogranulomatous inflammat

Temporomandibular Joint Gap Arthroplasty in Cats.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is defined as fibrous or bony fusion of the mandibular head of the condylar process and the mandibular fossa of the squamous part of the temporal bone. Ankylosis of the TMJ may be intraarticular, extraarticular, or both. The objective of this report is to describe the surgical planning, technique, and outcome of gap arthroplasty for extensive TMJ ankylosis in cats. Client-owned cats (n = 7) were examined clinically and surgical planning included the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and tridimensional (3D) printed models. In six of the seven ca

Valvular aortic stenosis in three cats.

Aortic stenosis affects 0.028% of cats in a shelter population, with valvular aortic stenosis compromising almost half of these cases. Of congenital heart diseases reported in cats, aortic stenosis is the second most common one, affecting 17% of these cases. Existing literature on valvular aortic stenosis is scant, and thus, presentation and prognosis of affected animals is poorly understood. In this case series, we describe three cats with confirmed valvular aortic stenosis. All cases were diagnosed echocardiographically, and all three had visible aortic valve leaflet fusion and a poststenoti

Renal abscesses in cats: six cases.

Case series summary Six cats were diagnosed with renal abscesses. Common clinical findings were lethargy, dehydration, abdominal pain and nephromegaly. Fever was noted in half of the cases. Diagnosis was established by ultrasonography, cytological examination and bacterial culture of abscess aspirates. At least one possible contributing factor could be identified in all cases. Antibiotics were consistently used and in two cats the abscess was surgically drained. The short-term outcome was fair but the long-term outcome was dependent on the underlying condition. Relevance and novel information

Hepatic encephalopathy in dogs and cats.

OBJECTIVE: To comparatively review the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in dogs and cats. DATA SOURCES: The Medline database was searched for articles related to HE in people, dogs, and cats. Articles published within the last 5 years were given special importance. HUMAN DATA SYNTHESIS: The pathogenesis of HE is complex and incompletely understood, but ammonia appears to play a central role. Hyperammonemia leads to accumulation of glutamine in astrocytes, with subsequent astrocyte swelling and neurological dysfunction. The developm

Large granular lymphoma in six cats.

Large granular lymphomas (LGLs) comprise a specific group of lymphomas regardless of classifi- cation scheme. An LGL consists of cells that show less or more mature morphology, but typically neoplastic cells possess cytoplasmic azurophilic granules clearly visible during cytological examin- ation. The aim of the present study was to present clinical and cytological data on large granular lymphomas in cats and to analyses the therapeutic responses in treated cases. During the period from 2012 to 2014 six cats were as having large granular lymphoma. In one cat a nasal form of LGL was recognized,

Presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma in cats.

Following unilateral enucleation, 4 Domestic Shorthair cats with an average age of 12.5 years (range: 9-16 years) were histologically diagnosed with a presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin). Medical records and follow-up were available for 3 of the 4 cats. Clinically, only 1 eye was affected in each cat; a mass lesion was noted in 2 cats, and a neoplasm was suspected in the other 2 cats. Grossly, 3 tumors presented as coalescing, poorly demarcated, white, friable masses filling the vitreous and intraocular ch

Cats: a gold mine for ophthalmology.

Over 200 hereditary diseases have been identified and reported in the cat, several of which affect the eye, with homology to human hereditary disease. Compared with traditional murine models, the cat demonstrates more features in common with humans, including many anatomic and physiologic similarities, longer life span, increased size, and a genetically more heterogeneous background. The development of genomic resources in the cat has facilitated mapping and further characterization of feline models. During recent years, the wealth of knowledge in feline ophthalmology and neurophysiology has b

Primary brachial plexus neoplasia in cats.

Conditions affecting the brachial plexus and its branches can cause lameness and/or neurological deficits. There are few reports of schwannomas in cats. In reported cases, the tumours arose from the dermis or subcutis of the limbs, head and neck and thorax, but there are no reports of primary tumours that arose from the brachial plexus itself. The purpose of this study is to present the clinical, radiological, ultrasonographical and pathological findings of primary brachial plexus tumour in three cats.

Clinical management of pregnancy in cats.

Average gestation length in domestic cats is 65.6 days, with a range of 52-74 days. Average reported litter size is 4.0 kittens per litter; litter size is not correlated with number of matings in a given estrus. Superfecundation is common in domestic cats; superfetation never has been definitively proven to occur. Eclampsia may occur during pregnancy in queens, with non-specific clinical signs. Ectopic pregnancy and uterine torsion have been reported. Pregnancy loss may be due to infectious causes, including bacteria, viruses or protozoa, or non-infectious causes, such as hypoluteoidism and ch
