Which factors regulate the reproduction of ectoparasites of temperate-zone cave-dwelling bats?

We studied the factors which regulate the reproduction of ectoparasites of temperate-zone cave-dwelling bats, using the Schreiber's bat (Miniopterus schreibersii) and its ectoparasites as a model. For this, we searched 969 bats during 2003 and 2004 at important stages of the bat yearly cycle and found four ectoparasite species regularly occurring on them: two nycteribiids (Nycteribia schmidlii and Penicillidia conspicua), one wing mite (Spinturnix psi), and one hard tick (Ixodes simplex simplex). These parasites were present throughout the yearly cycle, but their reproductive activity greatly

Trigeminal neuralgia in a patient with a dural arteriovenous fistula in Meckel's cave: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Trigeminal neuralgia is often the result of vascular compression at the root entry zone of the trigeminal nerve. We report a case of trigeminal neuralgia in a patient with a dural arteriovenous fistula in Meckel's cave. Endovascular closure of the fistula resulted in elimination of the patient's pain at the gasserian ganglion level. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old woman was referred for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia after failed conservative treatment, including multiple gasserian ganglion blocks. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain suggested a vascular

[Cranio-orbital zygomatic extradural approach for cavernous sinus or Meckel's cave tumors].

Direct surgery to cavernous sinus (CS) lesions has become one of the optimal treatments based on advancement in microsurgical anatomy and imaging modality, and the progress of microsurgical techniques. We have removed the CS or Meckel's cave tumors extradurally when they do not extend intradurally, using modified Al-Mefty's cranio-orbital zygomatic craniotomy. Three CS tumors; trigeminal neurofibroma, squamous cell carcinoma and chondrosarcoma, and a Meckel's cave meningioma were reported. Total removal was achieved in all but one (case 4). Postoperative complications were permanent ophthalmop

Pressure monitoring inside Meckel's cave during percutaneous microcompression of gasserian ganglion.

During percutaneous microcompression of the gasserian ganglion for the relief of trigeminal neuralgia, a computerized technique for monitoring the pressure inside Meckel's cave was employed in 22 patients. A dedicated transducer connected to a computer records the balloon inflation pressure. Its variations are discernible within tenths of a bar and are plotted in relation to time. The intraoperative pressure inside Meckel's cave is from 0.9 to 2.4 bars. When pressure was low, there was recurrence of pain. The highest values of pressure (1.9-2.4 bars) were observed in most of the patients suffe

Cave evolution on repeat: reuse of the same genomic regions across lineages of Astyanax mexicanus.

Similar traits repeatedly evolve across independent populations in response to similar environmental conditions. For many repeatedly evolved traits, it is unknown if populations evolve similar traits through the same or different genetic mechanisms. To address this question, we leveraged the Mexican tetra fish, Astyanax mexicanus, which has repeatedly evolved many traits including reduced sleep duration, eye degeneration, and metabolic shifts to accommodate limited nutrient availability. We defined whether shared or independent genetic architecture governs the repeated evolution of sleep loss,

Identification of a Hidden Lesion in Meckel's Cave: A Diagnostic Odyssey of Unilateral Facial Pain in a Nonagenarian.

Fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone and petrous apex is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous disorder, particularly in elderly individuals. Involvement of the skull base may present with atypical cranial neuropathies and may mimic inflammatory, vascular, or neoplastic diseases. This report describes a 90-year-old woman with recurrent unilateral facial pain and episodic facial muscle contractions. Initial assessment considered neoplastic pathology and inflammatory vasculopathy. Serial clinical evaluations, laboratory investigations, and neuroimaging established the diagnosis of left petrous apex

Experimental study on grouting diffusion and reinforcement law of grouting backfilling mining in caving zone.

Grouting in caving zones is complex and difficult to visualize, especially regarding the filling space, slurry flow, and bearing capacity of the gangue-slurry mixture. To address these challenges, experiments were conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of fly ash slurry and confined compression tests under various gangue particle grading schemes. The findings show the following: (1) The calculated and measured porosities are similar, providing an initial method for assessing the filling space. The slurry injection volume is proportional to the gangue porosity, but high slurry concen

Evolution of the roof caving and fracture zones during mining of close range coal seams.

This study employs an integrated methodology combining slip line field theory, FLAC3D numerical simulation, and hydraulic injection testing to systematically investigate the evolutionary characteristics of roof two zones under repeated mining conditions in close range coal seams No.9 and 10 (average interburden thickness is 10.2 m). Theoretical modeling reveals a maximum failure depth of 6.26 m in the No.9 coal seam, with corresponding caving and fracture zone heights measuring 9.6 m and 33.4 m respectively. Numerical simulations demonstrate that subsequent extraction of the No.10 coal seam in

Genomic characterization of cefotaxime-resistant Proteobacteria isolated from a bat-harboring cave in Zambia.

Bats are widely recognized as reservoirs of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and their ecological interactions with humans and livestock present important opportunities for the transmission of infectious agents and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, little is known about the occurrence of resistant bacteria in bat-associated environments in Zambia or their potential role in the maintenance of AMR outside clinical and agricultural settings. This study investigated the genomic characteristics of cefotaxime-resistant Proteobacteria isolated from bat fecal droppings collected at Leopards

Cheetah Acinonyx pardinensis (Felidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

A mandible fragment of Acinonyx pardinensis (Croizet et Jobert, 1828) is described from the Early Pleistocene locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea, Late Villafranchian, about 1.8-1.5 Ma). This is the first discovery of the genus Acinonyx in the Pleistocene of Crimea. Along with other felids, such as Homotherium, Megantereon, Panthera, Lynx, and Puma, cheetahs were typical representatives of the Late Villafranchian faunas of Eurasia. In the Taurida locality, Acinonyx pardinensis is co-occurred with Homotherium crenatidens, Megantereon adroveri, and Lynx issiodorensis.

[The peak latency prolongation of the blink reflex in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia of Meckel's cave mass].

The blink reflex test of the trigeminal nerve can provide valuable information about lesions site. However it may not find small compressive lesions. We observed peak latency prolongation of the blink reflex test in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia caused by a small Meckel's cave mass, in whom the onset latency was normal. Conclusion - We suggest peak latency of the blink reflex might be a valuable aid for discerning small mass in patients with trigeminal neuralgia. This is the first case report of compressive trigeminal neuralgia showing peak latency prolongation of the blink reflex test.

Flatness of the Meckel cave may cause primary trigeminal neuralgia: a radiomics-based study.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular contact (NVC) is the main cause of primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN); however, cases of PTN without NVC are still observed. In this study, the Meckel cave (MC) morphology in PTN were analyzed by radiomics and compared to healthy controls (HCs) to explore the cause of PTN. METHODS: We studied the 3.0T MRI data of 115 patients with PTN and 46 HCs. Bilateral MC was modeled using the 3D Slicer software, and the morphological characteristics of MC were analyzed using the radiomics method. RESULTS: The right side incidence rate in the PTN group was higher than the left s

Unearthing Neanderthal population history using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from cave sediments.

Bones and teeth are important sources of Pleistocene hominin DNA, but are rarely recovered at archaeological sites. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has been retrieved from cave sediments but provides limited value for studying population relationships. We therefore developed methods for the enrichment and analysis of nuclear DNA from sediments and applied them to cave deposits in western Europe and southern Siberia dated to between 200,000 and 50,000 years ago. We detected a population replacement in northern Spain about 100,000 years ago, which was accompanied by a turnover of mtDNA. We also identi
