Tissue homeostasis relies on the balance between proliferation of stem cells and death of differentiated cells. PURPOSE: To study the frequency of chromosome aberrations induced by soft X-rays. To see if the core ionization of DNA atoms is involved in this end-point as much as it appears to be in cell killing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: V79 hamster cells were irradiated by synchrotron radiation photons iso-attenuated in the cell (250, 350, 810eV). The morphological chromosome aberrations detected in the first post-irradiation cell division (dicentrics and centric rings) were studied by Giemsa staining.

In this report, in situ hybridization with whole chromosome painting probes was used to paint radiation-induced micronuclei (MN) in three lymphoblastoid cells lines to investigate the frequency of radiation-induced MN. The results obtained for four different chromosomes showed that there was a significant deviation of the numbers of signal-positive MN from that expected on the basis of DNA proportionality. The central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) is a key hub of the neural circuitry regulating alcohol and stress interactions. However, the exact neuronal populations that govern this interaction are not well defined. Here we examined the role of the neuropeptide cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART) within the CeA in stress-induced alcohol seeking. We found that CART-containing neurons are predominantly expressed in the capsular/lateral division of the CeA and are a subpopulation of protein kinase Cδ (PKCδ) cells, distinct from corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF)-expressing cells.
