The cerebellum is crucial for predictive motor control and learning, but growing evidence suggests that it also generates forward models for nonmotor functions. Previous studies have reported periodic neuronal activity in the cerebellar dentate nucleus when animals predicted the timing of regularly presented visual stimuli. Since the dentate nucleus is an output structure, this activity likely reflects computations in the cerebellar cortex. Considering that Purkinje cells (PCs), the sole output of the cerebellar cortex, are more numerous than cerebellar nuclear neurons and that nuclear neurons

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The pathophysiology of crossed cerebellar diaschisis remains to be elucidated. The mechanism responsible appears to be deafferentation through the corticopontocerebellar tract, which terminates in the cerebellar gray matter. However, few studies have demonstrated the hemodynamic and metabolic changes in the cerebellar gray matter and pons in crossed cerebellar diaschisis.
METHODS: Using positron emission tomography in 24 patients with unilateral supratentorial stroke, we evaluated regional blood flow, metabolic rate of oxygen, oxygen extraction fraction, and blood volu

Transplasma membrane redox plays a significant role in cellular activation and growth. Six isoenzymes could be prepared from purified rat brain synaptic plasma membrane. Polyclonal antibodies have been prepared against six transplasma membrane oxydoreductases (PMO-I to PMO-VI) and the tissue distribution of the various iso-enzymes have been investigated in adult rat brains by means of immunohistochemistry. PMO-I is densely observed in layers I, IV and V of the parietal cortex, in CA1 of the hippocampus (except for the molecular layer), in the caudate putamen, in the dorsal, granular and ventra

Ischemia is a major cause of damage to the central nervous system as a consequence of stroke or trauma. Here, we analyzed with high temporal resolution the time course of pathological changes in the neurons (granule and Purkinje cells) and glia (Bergmann and astroglia cells) in the cerebellar cortex and white matter. The period studied ranged from 30 min to 7 days after a microsphere-induced embolism used as a model of stroke and multi-infarct dementia. Some pathological changes in the neurons in the cerebellar cortex were identified early, that is, beginning at 3 h after the microsphere-induc

Inborn errors of metabolism can affect the cerebellum during development, maturation and later during life. We have established criteria for pattern recognition of cerebellar abnormalities in metabolic disorders. The abnormalities can be divided into four major groups: cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), hyperplasia, cerebellar atrophy (CA), cerebellar white matter abnormalities (WMA) or swelling, and involvement of the dentate nuclei (DN) or cerebellar cortex. CH can be an isolated typical finding, as in adenylsuccinase deficiency, but is also occasionally seen in many other disorders. Differentiatio

The cortex and cerebellum form multi-synaptic reciprocal connections. We investigate the functional connectivity between single spiking cerebellar neurons and the population activity of the mouse dorsal cortex using mesoscale imaging. Cortical representations of individual cerebellar neurons vary significantly across different brain states but are drawn from a common set of cortical networks. These cortical-cerebellar connectivity features are observed in mossy fibers and Purkinje cells as well as neurons in different cerebellar lobules, albeit with variations across cell types and regions. The cerebellum contains several cognitive-related subregions that are involved in different functional networks. The cerebellar crus II is correlated with the frontoparietal network (FPN), whereas the cerebellar IX is associated with the default-mode network (DMN). These two networks are anticorrelated and cooperatively implicated in cognitive control, which may facilitate the motor recovery in stroke patients. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) changes in 25 subcortical ischemic stroke patients with well-recovered global motor functi

Following injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the cerebellar cortex and nuclei of the cat, the distribution of labeled cells in the raphe nuclei was mapped. The findings confirm those made previously in studies of retrograde cell degeneration following cerebellar ablations (Brodal et al., 1960a), and in addition reveal new details in the projection of the raphe nuclei onto the cerebellar cortex and nuclei. All the raphe nuclei except nucleus linearis intermedius and nucleus linearis rostralis project onto the cerebellar cortex. The nuclei raphe obscurus and pontis contribute the grea

Local cerebral metabolic rate for glucose was studied utilizing 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose and positron emission tomography (PET) in 14 chronically alcohol-dependent patients and 8 normal control subjects of similar age and sex. Nine of the 14 patients (Group A) had clinical signs of alcoholic cerebellar degeneration, and the remaining 5 (Group B) did not have signs of alcoholic cerebellar degeneration. PET studies of Group A revealed significantly decreased local cerebral metabolic rates for glucose in the superior cerebellar vermis in comparison with the normal control subjects. Group B

The basal ganglia and cerebellum are major subcortical structures that influence not only movement, but putatively also cognition and affect. Both structures receive input from and send output to the cerebral cortex. Thus, the basal ganglia and cerebellum form multisynaptic loops with the cerebral cortex. Basal ganglia and cerebellar loops have been assumed to be anatomically separate and to perform distinct functional operations. We investigated whether there is any direct route for basal ganglia output to influence cerebellar function that is independent of the cerebral cortex. We injected r

We applied voxel-based morphometry, an indirect volumetric technique, to MRI volumes of patients carrying the spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 mutation to determine patterns of brain atrophy. Nine patients were compared to 27 controls matched for age, sex and handedness. An optimised voxel-based morphometry protocol was used for pre-processing to minimize systematic bias. We observed significant volume loss in the cerebellar hemispheres, vermis, pons, mesencephalon and thalamus. Also affected were several supratentorial areas such as the right orbito-frontal cortex, right temporo-mesial cortex an

Persistent and ramping neural activity in the frontal cortex anticipates specific movements1-6. Preparatory activity is distributed across several brain regions7,8, but it is unclear which brain areas are involved and how this activity is mediated by multi-regional interactions. The cerebellum is thought to be primarily involved in the short-timescale control of movement9-12; however, roles for this structure in cognitive processes have also been proposed13-16. In humans, cerebellar damage can cause defects in planning and working memory13. Here we show that persistent representation of inform

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) is characterized by deficits of speech, movement, and affect that can occur following tumor removal from the posterior fossa. The role of cerebro-cerebellar tract injuries in the etiology of CMS remains unclear, with recent studies suggesting that cerebro-cerebellar dysfunction may be related to chronic, rather than transient, symptomatology.
METHODS: We measured functional connectivity between the cerebellar cortex and functional nodes throughout the brain using fMRI acquired after tumor removal but prior to adjuvant therapy in a cohort of 70 pati

BACKGROUND: Connections between the cerebellum and the cortex play a critical role in learning and executing complex behaviours. Dual-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be used non-invasively to probe connectivity changes between the lateral cerebellum and motor cortex (M1) using the motor evoked potential as an outcome measure (cerebellar-brain inhibition, CBI). However, it gives no information about cerebellar connections to other parts of cortex.
OBJECTIVES: We used electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate whether it was possible to detect activity evoked in any areas of c

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of bilateral cerebellar high-frequency rTMS on swallowing function and swallowing phase in patients with PSD.
METHODS: 42 patients with PSD were randomly divided into bilateral cerebellar stimulation group and sham group (stimulating coil and scalp at a 90° angle). The rTMS stimulation parameters are 10 Hz,120% rMT, with 9 s intervals and 1 s stimulus, totaling 500 pulses. Before and after 3-week treatment, the MEPs amplitude of the suprahyoid muscles of the bilateral cerebral cortex was recorded as an index to quantify the excitability of the cerebral swallow

Most of our motor skills are acquired through learning. Experiments of gain adaptation of ocular reflexes have consistently suggested that the memory of adaptation is initially formed in the cerebellar cortex, and is transferred to the cerebellar (vestibular) nuclei for consolidation to long-term memory after repetitions of training. We have recently developed a new system to evaluate the motor learning in human subjects using prism adaptation of hand reaching movement, by referring to the prism adaptation of dart throwing of Martin et al. (1996). In our system, the subject views the small tar

The cerebellum plays an important role in the visual guidance of movement. In order to understand the anatomical basis of visuomotor control, we studied the projection of pontine visual cells onto the cerebellar cortex of monkeys. Wheat germ agglutinin horseradish peroxidase was injected into the dorsolateral pons two monkeys. Retrogradely labelled cells were mapped in the cerebral cortex and superior colliculus, and orthogradely labelled fibers in the cerebellar cortex. The largest number of retrogradely labelled cells in the cerebral cortex was in a group of medial extrastriate visual areas.

The motor cortex and cerebellum are thought to be critical for learning and maintaining motor behaviors. Here we use transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to test the role of the motor cortex and cerebellum in sensorimotor learning in speech. During productions of "head," "bed," and "dead," the first formant of the vowel sound was altered in real time toward the first formant of the vowel sound in "had," "bad," and "dad." Compensatory changes in first and second formant production were used as a measure of motor adaptation. tDCS to either the motor cortex or the cerebellum improved se

The cerebellum (i.e., little brain) plays an important role in motion and balances control abilities, despite its much smaller size and deeper sulci compared to the cerebrum. Previous cerebellum studies mainly relied on and focused on conventional volumetric analysis, which ignores the extremely deep and highly convoluted nature of the cerebellar cortex. To better reveal localized functional and structural changes, we propose cortical surface-based analysis of the cerebellar cortex. Specifically, we first reconstruct the cerebellar cortical surfaces to represent and characterize the highly fol

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum has traditionally been associated with motor functions, but recent evidence highlights its critical role in cognitive and emotional regulation, contributing to the neuropathology of schizophrenia. Our previous data-driven research demonstrated that cerebellar-cortical functional connectivity can predict antipsychotic treatment outcomes in first-episode psychosis (FEP). The present study aimed to investigate specific cerebellar functional systems involved in treatment prediction.
STUDY DESIGN: This study included 127 patients with FEP who underwent 12 weeks of antips
