Feline Demodicosis Case Report-First Molecular Characterization of Demodex Mites in Romania.

Cat demodicosis is uncommon to rare, and is caused by Demodex cati, Demodex gatoi and another unnamed species. The investigated patient was a mix-breed, 10-year-old feline with no dermatological history. Alopecia, erythema, minor erosions and ulcerations and crusts, associated with pruritus and self-trauma, were observed on the head. Dark, agglutinated cerumen was also present in the external ear canal. The agent causing the skin condition in the feline patient was identified as being a Demodex genus mite, based on the specific, morphological characteristics noticed upon the microscopic examin

Evaluation of the effect of afoxalaner with milbemycin 1 oxime in the treatment of rabbits naturally infected with Psoroptes cuniculi.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculi) are very popular as pets. However, problems of otitits caused by Psoroptes cuniculi are one of the main reasons to visit the veterinarian. Isoxazolines are an alternative treatment to treat this mite, and therefore, an evaluation of the effectiveness of oral afoxalaner with milbemycin oxime in rabbits infected with P. cuniculi was carried out. Nineteen rabbits, of New Zealand breed, with otitis due to an infection with P. cuniculi, were treated, whereas six rabbits were left untreated and formed the control group. The ear canals of each individual were examined,

Vacuolization and alterations of lysosomal membrane proteins in cochlear marginal cells contribute to hearing loss in neuraminidase 1-deficient mice.

The neuraminidase-1 (Neu1) knockout mouse model is a phenocopy of the lysosomal storage disease (LSD) sialidosis, characterized by multisystemic and neuropathic symptoms, including hearing loss. We have characterized the auditory defects in Neu1(-/-) mice and found that hearing loss involves both conductive and sensorineural components. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds were significantly elevated in Neu1(-/-) mice at P21 (48-55 dB), and hearing loss appeared progressive (53-66 dB at P60). At these ages Neu1(-/-) mice accumulated cerumen in the external ear canal and had a thickened

Isolation of Malassezia pachydermatis and M. sympodialis from the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis externa.

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Malassezia spp. in the external ear canal of cats with and without otitis. Forty-five animals were studied, 20 with and 25 without otitis externa (OE). Cerumen or secretion from external ear canal samples was cultured on modified Mycosel agar and sterile olive oil was added to the surface of the medium before specimen seeding. The isolates were analysed for macro- and micromorphology and identified by catalase tests and on the basis of growth on Tween 20, 40, 60 and 80. Malassezia spp. were isolated from 15 out of 20 (75%) animals wi

[External otitis].

Otitis externa is one of the most common diseases in ORL practice, during summer; the treatment of otitis externa may be simple and easy or protracted and frustrating, also with fatal outcome. Many local factors may interfere with the normal defences against infections in the external auditory canal. Removing or dissolving the cerumen by water or other instruments eliminates an important barrier to infections: its acids inhibit the growth of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and fungi (Aspergillus). Also skin abrasions or irritation, allergic diseases and many systemi

The hearing profile of Nigerian school children.

The paucity of up-to-date and representative epidemiological data on hearing disorders in Nigeria has been observed as undermining the effective advocacy of prevention initiatives. This study attempts to address this problem by evaluating the prevalence and pattern of hearing impairment in school entrants. Parental interviews, otoscopy, pure-tone audiometric screening (frequency 0.5-4 kHz) and tympanometric examinations were conducted for a representative sample of 359 school children in an inner city area of Lagos. The prevalence of hearing loss was 13.9%. Middle ear abnormalities were noted

In vitro activity of climbazole, clotrimazole and silver-sulphadiazine against isolates of Malassezia pachydermatis.

Malassezia pachydermatis is a yeast-like, mainly zoophilic fungus, also known as Malassezia canis. It can be isolated in 20-50% from normal ear cerumen specimen from dogs or cats and has an even higher prevalence in non-suppurative otitis externa in animal species such as these. The genus Malassezia contains the two species M. furfur, a mainly anthropophilic fungus which physiologically occurs on human skin, and M. pachydermatis. We performed Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)-testings of 40 clinical isolates of M. pachydermatis against climbazole (CLIM), clotrimazole (CLOT) and silver-sul

Ear disease in a group general practice. A review of world communities.

This five-year survey of ear disease in a London population of 10,000 is considered to be a valid description of the incidence of ear disease presenting in a general practice community, since all patients were examined and diagnosed either by the author or by the district hospital Ear, Nose and Throat Department. The results agreed generally with the findings of the National Morbidity Surveys, but a more comprehensive range of ear disease is described. There is general agreement, between this and other surveys in the United Kingdom and the United States, that the most common ear diseases prese

Keratosis obturans and external auditory canal cholesteatoma.

Keratosis obturans and external auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC) have previously been considered to represent the same disease process. However, review of the literature and our cases reveal these to be two different clinical and pathological processes. Keratosis obturans presents as hearing loss and usually acute, severe pain secondary to the accumulation of large plugs of desquamated keratin in the ear canal. External auditory canal cholesteatoma presents as otorrhea with a chronic, dull pain secondary to an invasion of squamous tissue into a localized area of periosteitis in the canal wa

Cerumenolytics with or without manual extraction for impacted earwax: A network meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Many different substances for cerumenolysis have been evaluated in clinical trials. We carried out a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare their effectiveness. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for randomised clinical trials conducted in patients with impacted cerumen evaluating cerumenolytics. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with wax clearance using manual techniques. Rankogram plot was used to assess the "best" cerumenolytic. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) was the effect estimate. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies
