Radiological Assessment of Skeletal Maturity: A Comparative Study of Hand-Wrist Radiographs and Cervical Vertebrae.

This study compared the reliability of hand-wrist radiographs and cervical vertebrae maturation in assessing skeletal maturity in 100 Indian subjects (44 males, 56 females) aged 9-16 years. Results showed a positive correlation (r = 0.921, P < 0.0001) between the skeletal maturity indicators (SMI) and cervical vertebrae maturation indicator (CVMI) stages. Females were ahead of males at all levels of skeletal maturity indicators. The study suggests that cervical vertebrae maturation can be used as a reliable alternative to hand-wrist radiographs for assessing skeletal maturity.

Fracture of Fused Vertebrae More Than 20 Years After Anterior Cervical Fusion: A Case Report.

Anterior cervical fusion surgery is widely performed for cervical spine disorders. While generally effective, late complications such as vertebral fractures in fused segments are rare but clinically significant, especially in elderly patients with bone fragility. We report here the case of an 84-year-old woman who developed a flexion deformity fracture at a fused cervical segment more than 20 years after anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion with autologous iliac bone grafting and C4 laminoplasty. She presented with neck pain and radicular symptoms in her left arm after a fall. Initial conse

Preliminary experience of titanium mesh cages for pathological fracture of middle and lower cervical vertebrae.

The advantages and disadvantages of titanium mesh cages (TMCs) assisted by anterior cervical plates (ACPs) for interbody fusion following cervical corpectomy were investigated. Between January 2002 and September 2006, 17 patients with cervical radiculomyelopathy caused by metastasis-induced pathologic fractures were selected for anterior corpectomy. TMCs were inserted into the post-corpectomy defect and stabilized by placement of ACPs filled with Triosite. Post-operative plain X-ray films indicated maintenance of spinal stability. No ceramic, donor site or surgery-related complications were ob

Why do almost all mammals have seven cervical vertebrae? Developmental constraints, Hox genes, and cancer.

Mammals have seven cervical vertebrae, a number that remains remarkably constant. I propose that the lack of variation is caused by developmental constraints: to wit, changes in Hox gene expression, which lead to changes in the number of cervical vertebrae, are associated with neural problems and with an increased susceptibility to early childhood cancer and stillbirths. In vertebrates, Hox genes are involved in the development of the skeletal axis and the nervous system, among other things. In humans and mice, Hox genes have been shown also to be involved in the normal and abnormal (cancer) p

Cervical canal stenosis caused by progressive fusion and enlargement of cervical vertebrae with features of Proteus syndrome and Klippel-Feil syndrome.

We report the case of a female who presented with progressive fusion and an enlargement of the cervical vertebrae. Her cervical deformity gradually progressed with age, and the abnormal bony protrusion into the spinal canal caused myelopathy. We resected the affected vertebrae to decompress the spinal cord and performed combined anterior-posterior spinal fusion. The progression of the spinal deformity and enlargement of vertebrae stopped after surgery. The enlargement of vertebrae in the present case resembled that observed in Proteus syndrome; however, autonomous vertebral fusion has not been

In vivo cervical vertebrae kinematic studies based on dual fluoroscopic imaging system measurement: A narrative review.

Understanding the motion characteristics of cervical spine through biomechanical analysis aids in the identification of abnormal joint movements. This knowledge is essential for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of related disorders. However, the anatomical structure of the cervical spine is complex, and traditional medical imaging techniques have certain limitations. Capturing the movement characteristics of various parts of the cervical spine in vivo during motion is challenging. The dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS) is able to quantify the motion and motion patterns of individu

[Criteria for evaluating fractures and luxations of the upper cervical vertebrae using conventional x-ray technics].

To assess the diagnostic value of conventional x-ray examination in fresh injuries of the cervical vertebral column, 57 cases of dislocation or fracture of the cervical vertebral column were evaluated. This study revealed the special value of conventional tomography of the cervical vertebral column in vertebral body fractures without essential dislocation of fragments or without disturbing the frame structure of the vertebral bodies. Conventional tomography will always reveal in case of dislocation the exact relative positions of the disjointed articulate areas, whereas in dislocation fracture

The cervical vertebrae maturation (CVM) method cannot predict craniofacial growth in girls with Class II malocclusion.

INTRODUCTION: The cervical vertebrae maturation (CVM) method is used to determine the timing of treatment of Class II malocclusion. Because its performance has not been tested in patients with Class II, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the CVM method in predicting craniofacial growth in Class II malocclusion. METHODS: Twenty-nine untreated girls with Class II malocclusion were identified among participants of the Nijmegen Growth Study. Each girl had a series of cephalograms taken semi-annually from 9 to 14 years of age. The CVM status was established by five ob

[Complications of Forestier disease affecting the cervical vertebrae as seen from a neurosurgical point of view].

In the presence of Spondylosis hyperostotica an isolated spondylophytary ventral ossification leads to the stiffening of the vertebral column with a considerable loss of elasticity. Patients with a rarely occurring participation of the cervical vertebral column are particularly endangered by traumata. Even a trivial trauma may lead to the fracture or a spinal canal diameter in the lower normal range lead to neurological symptoms. The degree of the instability and the neurological symptoms determine the therapeutical approach. The strategy of the treatment is discussed on the basis of the examp

A study on sex prediction by using machine algorithms with anthropometric measurements of the seventh cervical vertebra.

Prediction of sex is among important topics of forensic medicine and forensic anthropology. In studies conducted for sex prediction, pelvis and cranium bones are the most preferred bones. In cases when it is difficult to examine the pelvis and cranium bones, vertebrae have been the subject of research in sex analysis studies. The aim of this study is to predict sex by using Computed Tomography (CT) images of the vertebra prominens (C7). Another aim of the study is to make automatic measurements using labeling on C7. This retrospective study included images of 100 female and 100 male individual

Relevance of discrete traits in forensic anthropology: From the first cervical vertebra to the pelvic girdle.

In forensic anthropology, identification begins by determining the sex, age, ancestry and stature of the individuals. Asymptomatic variations present on the skeleton, known as discrete traits, can be useful to identify individuals, or at least contribute to complete their biological profile. We decided to focus our work on the upper part of the skeleton, from the first vertebra to the pelvic girdle, and we chose to present 8 discrete traits (spina bifida occulta, butterfly vertebra, supraclavicular nerve foramen, coracoclavicular joint, os acromiale, suprascapular foramen, manubrium foramen an

First cervical vertebra (atlas) fracture mechanism studies using finite element method.

Injury mechanisms and stress distribution patterns are important in the clinical evaluation of spinal injuries. Recognition and interpretation of the failure patterns help to determine spinal instability and consequently the choice of treatment. Although, the biomechanics responses of the atlas have received much attention, it has not been investigated using theoretical modeling. Mathematical techniques such as finite element model will provide further understanding to the injury mechanisms of the atlas, which is important for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of spinal injuries.
