From 1970 through 1986, 219 women received postoperative pelvic external beam therapy and vaginal radium or cesium for uterine cancer. Prescribed external beam and total vaginal surface doses ranged from 38 to 51 Gy and from 70 to 119 Gy, respectively. Severe enteric morbidity developed in 7.8% of patients (15 small bowel, 1 sigmoid, 1 rectal). Complications occurred more frequently in patients with pelvic lymph node sampling at hysterectomy, abdominal surgery prior to hysterectomy, and low body weight. Unexpected hysterographic findings were encountered in 42 of 105 patients with postmenopausal bleeding or endometrial carcinoma. These included the extent and location of tumor, size and position of the uterus, uterine perforations or fistulas, and undetected myomas, congenital defects, or adnexal pathology. We produced both isotopes via proton irradiation of a cesium iodide (CsI) target at the Brookhaven Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator (BTVG). The paper presents the data of many years' studies of the effect of different soil radiation pollution levels on the plant accumulation of different types of 137Cs and potassium and phosphorus salts. With increased soil radiation levels, not only the plant content of 137Cs becomes higher, but that of potassium and phosphoric acid also changes. BACKGROUND: Prussian Blue (PB), ferric hexacyanoferrate is indicated for (oral) treatment of internal contamination with radioisotopes of cesium or thallium. Cyanide is 35-40% of PB's molecular composition, thus cyanide may be released during transit through the digestive tract under physiological pH. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigated the issue of cyanide release prior to drug approval to ensure the drug's benefits exceeded risks.

This study was conducted to investigate the formation of furan from sugars, ascorbic acid, and organic acids as affected by ionizing radiation and thermal treatments. Results showed that both thermal treatments and irradiation induced formation of furan from ascorbic acid, fructose, sucrose, or glucose. Little furan was produced from malic acid or citric acid. The pH and concentration of sugars and ascorbic acid solutions had profound influences on furan formation due to either irradiation or thermal treatment. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were oxidized with Ce(IV), and the resulting quinones were determined by reductive-mode liquid chromatography-electrochemical detection. This oxidation is a rapid, automatable step, involving of Ce(IV) reagent to the PAH sample and cleaning up the derivative with C18 solid-phase extraction.
