The double-door tongue flap for total cheek mucosa defects.

Lining of total cheek mucosa defects can be accomplished by opening the tongue along its lateral border and preparing two myomucosa flaps that can be swung upward and downward like a double door to be sutured into the defect. The tongue is released 3 weeks later in a second-stage operation. The operation is quick and easy compared with other methods to achieve lining for such defects. Tongue function is not impaired after healing of the second-stage operation.

Indirect cervical lymphoscintigraphy in healthy subjects via submucosal cheek injections.

A new method of cervical lymphoscintigraphy is presented. It was performed on 16 healthy individuals via bilateral submucosal cheek injections with 99mTc-rhenium-sulfide-colloid. The ipsilateral uptake by the lymphatics on each side of the neck was consistently demonstrated in 15 subjects and allowed a comparative evaluation of the cervical lymphatic chains, including the submental, submandibular, jugulo-digastric and jugulo-omohyoid. The transverse cervical chain was demonstrated in 10 of 16 subjects. The method is simple, reliable and capable of clearly visualizing the lymphatic drainage of

Cheek mucosa response to silk, cotton, and nylon suture materials.

The cheek mucosa reacted to the implantation of cotton and silk with an aseptic inflammatory exudate which was found 24 hours and 4 days postoperatively. The leukocytic infiltrate was followed by a histiocytic reaction. Which was established at 7 days but which later progressively declined. The comparison of these findings with those previously obtained from gingival tissues revealed that the leukocytic infiltration in the gingiva was minimal or nonexistent. Probably, the difference in the leukocytic reacting capacity of the gingiva and cheek mucosa was due to the different histologic architec

Pathological studies of cheek teeth apical infections in the horse: 5. Aetiopathological findings in 57 apically infected maxillary cheek teeth and histological and ultrastructural findings.

Examination of 57 apically infected maxillary cheek teeth (CT) showed one or more viable pulps and minimal apical calcified tissue changes present in recently infected CT. With chronic infections, pulps were necrotic or absent, pulp horns were filled with food if occlusal pulpar exposure was present, and gross caries of dentine was occasionally present. With chronic infections, the apical changes varied from gross destructive changes in some teeth, to extensive proliferative calcified apical changes in others. Infundibular caries was believed to cause apical infection in just 16% of infected (

Intranasal Dental Repulsion of a Displaced Cheek Tooth in an Arabian Filly.

This case report documents an unusual cheek tooth (CT) displacement in a 3-year-old Arabian filly. The horse was referred to the clinic for loss of appetite and right-sided facial deformity. At admission, an oral inspection was performed, followed by a dental radiographic examination. The radiographs showed a very oblique vertical angulation (135°) of the CT 106 compared to the other premolars (107 and 108 CTs) (40°). In consideration of the clinical and radiographic findings, surgical extraction of the 106 CT was indicated. Due to the unique positioning of the displaced tooth, traditional ext

Oral cheek tooth extraction and treatment of osteomyelitis in llamas and alpacas.

BACKGROUND: Advanced dental disease with associated osteomyelitis is commonly encountered in New World camelids (NWC). In the past, the treatment of choice consisted of extraoral techniques, with complications occurring in up to 70% of cases. With advances in the treatment of dental disease in other species, oral extraction may offer a less invasive alternative, possibly associated with fewer complications. This report describes the diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcome of NWC with dental disease. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of NWC with advanced dental disease undergoing oral

Evaluation of Cheek Edema in an Infant Reveals Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare hematological disorder. Skin rash is the typical early feature, and bony involvement is the second most common presentation. METHODS: We present a case of a 5-month-old female infant with left hemifacial swelling, initially treated for infection with antibiotics. However, due to persistence of swelling and new onset fever, further evaluation with ultrasonography, CT scan, FDG PET/CT and eventually biopsy was performed. RESULTS: Imaging methods revealed mandibular osteolysis indicative of either osteomyelitis or histiocytosis X. Tissue biops

Proliferating Pilar Tumor of the Cheek Misdiagnosed as Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Proliferating pilar tumours, also known as trichilemmal tumours, are rare tumours that arise from the external root sheath of hair follicles. These lesions usually have a firm-to-soft texture and form small nodules, but may grow gradually, causing pressure ulceration or hyperkeratinisation. Because of this feature, care should be taken to differentiate proliferating pilar tumours from squamous cell carcinoma. An 89-year-old woman presented with a protruding horn-shaped mass on her left malar area, which was first misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and then revealed to be a low-grade malig

Well-differentiated liposarcoma of the cheek misdiagnosed for lipoma: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Liposarcoma is the most common sarcoma entity and accounts for 17% to 30% of soft tissue sarcomas. There are several histological types including well-differentiated liposarcoma. This paper aims to underline the interest of immunohistochemical and cytogenetic studies to diagnose well-differentiated liposarcoma and to show the delicacy of performing a surgical procedure in the cheek area. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report the case of a 48-year-old female patient who presented with the recurrence of a right jugal mass initially diagnosed as a lipoma on the resection specimen.

Severe phymatous rosacea of the nose, cheeks, and chin treated with hydrosurgery.

Phymatous rosacea is a rare and severe form of rosacea that manifests as disfiguring soft-tissue hypertrophy and sebaceous gland hyperplasia and fibrosis. Most cases are surgically treated; surgical modalities vary, however, ranging from cryosurgery to conventional excision, and consensus guidelines for surgical management do not exist. The Versajet II Hydrosurgery System (Smith-Nephew) is a high-pressure, pulsatile lavage system. We present the case of a 75-year-old man with severe phymatous rosacea of the nose, cheeks, and chin who was successfully treated with the Versajet II Hydrosurgery S

Pleomorphic adenoma of cheek: a rare case report and review of literature.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. The most common sites of PA of the minor salivary glands are the palate, followed by lips and cheeks. Throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity are rarely involved. Here, we report a case of PA of the cheek in a 42-year-old female. The mass was excised and the patient was followed for 3 years post operatively with no recurrence.

A new understanding of oral and dental pathology of the equine cheek teeth.

Equine dental disease has a high prevalence. Because of developmental, functional, and anatomic differences, limited inference can be made from brachydont dental pathology to that of equine cheek teeth. This article reviews the pathology of equine cheek teeth and their associated oral tissues, with specific information on periodontitis, pulpitis, maxillary infundibular changes, dental fractures, dental overgrowths, mucosal ulceration, and the regenerative capacity of equine teeth.

A histological study of peripheral dental caries of equine cheek teeth.

Peripheral caries of equine cheek teeth is a poorly described disorder and, in particular little is known of its histopathology. Histological examinations of decalcified sections of 21 equine peripheral caries-affected cheek teeth showed two different patterns of cemental lesions; including progressive enlargement of focal, flask-like lesions leading to breakdown of the adjacent cementum, and secondly; a more generalized flaking-off of thin layers of under-run, surface cementum. A thick layer of plaque and food material usually lay on the surface of affected cementum and also within cemental d

Unilateral atrophy of the cheek: autologous fat injection as treatment of choice.

Lipodystrophies are a set of heterogeneous conditions resulting from defective lipid metabolism and characterized by adipose tissue atrophy. We report on a 54-year-old woman who presented at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with an increasing unilateral atrophy of her left cheek for the past 3 years. The patient's history showed that she had sustained a left zygoma fracture 35 years ago but did not have any other disease. According to the patient's wish, a correction of the left cheek was performed by autologous fat injection, which led to a highly acceptable postoperative resu

Sialectasis of Stensen's duct: an unusual case of recurrent cheek swelling.

Sialectasis of Stensen's duct is an uncommon condition of the salivary gland featuring dilation of the parotid duct. Various surgical and non-surgical treatment modalities have been reported as treatment for Stensen's duct stenosis. In this report, a rare case of sialectasis with fusiform dilatation of the parotid duct is presented, which was corrected by a simple and easy surgical technique creating a new opening in the buccal mucosa.

[Expression of P21 and P185 in benign and malignant epithelia of cheek mucosa].

To analyze the expression of P21 and P185 in normal epithelia, chronic non-specific inflammatory epithelia, squamous cell carcinoma and epithelia immediately adjacent to carcinoma of cheek mucosa, immunohistochemistry technique and image analysis technique were used. The results showed: there was excellently higher expression of P21 and P185 in squamous cell carcinoma and epithelia immediately adjacent to carcinoma than in normal and inflammatory epithelia of cheek mucosa, which were compactly correlative.
