Infant and toddler pathways leading to early externalizing disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine pathways leading to specific types of early externalizing disorders. METHOD: Longitudinal data were collected on 310 low-income, male subjects followed from infancy until age 6 years. RESULTS: Support across informants was found for the importance of the caregiving environment during infancy in relation to the development of externalizing disorders at school entry. Support was also found for the significance of early child factors, but this was limited to child behavior at home. CONCLUSIONS: The results are consistent with social learning and attachment models, which s

Behavioral problems and emotional stress in children with bruxism.

Bruxism has a multifactorial etiology, and psychosocial factors have been considered to increase the risk of occurrence of this parafunction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior profile of a group of children diagnosed with bruxism. Eighty 7-11-year-old children of both genders (mean age 8.8 years) first recruited as eligible participants. Twenty-nine children (18 males and 11 females) whose parents/guardians reported to present frequent episodes of tooth grinding/clenching while awake or during sleep (at least 3 nights a week) in the previous 3 months were enrolled in the study

Can a valid diagnosis of disruptive behavior disorder be made in preschool children?

OBJECTIVE: Disruptive behavior problems are the most common reason preschool children come to mental health clinics. Yet consensus on the conceptualization and measurement of such problems in young children is lacking. DSM-IV is the most widely used nosologic system for children, but the majority of the validation sample consisted of school-age children and adolescents. It is debatable whether behavioral problems in young children should be considered within a diagnostic framework at all, since normative behavioral disruption occurs during the preschool period. Developing valid methods for ass

Intimate partner violence and welfare participation: a longitudinal causal analysis.

This longitudinal study examined the temporal-ordered causal relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV), five mental disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic attack, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]), alcohol abuse/dependence, drug abuse/dependence, treatment seeking (from physician, counselor, and self-help group), employment, child support, and welfare participation. It was a secondary data analysis of records of 571 women; the records were extracted from the study "Violence Against Women and the Role of Welfare Reform" (VAWRWR). Results from ge

[Speech and language development disorders in children].

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, disturbances in the acquirement of language skills are not infrequently overlooked or are recognized too late, in particular when the problem is speech understanding, or when behavioral disturbances predominate. Diagnostic guidelines differentiate between circumscribed articulation disorders and expressive and receptive speech problems. The diagnostic work-up must take account of the changes in symptoms occurring during the course of the child's development. Mental comorbidity may be observed in every second speech-disordered child. Latent profile analysis of observed parenting behaviors in a clinic sample.

We examined typologies of parenting practices using latent profile analysis (LPA) in a sample of families with young children who had externalizing behavior disorders. We also examined mother and child characteristics associated with class membership using ratings from multiple informants. The sample included pooled data from five parenting treatment outcome research studies on oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and/or conduct disorder (CD) conducted throughout the past 20 years. These studies included 21 separate cohorts of children resulting in a total of 514 families. All children met diag

Lack of association between behavioral inhibition and psychosocial adversity factors in children at risk for anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: In a previous controlled study of offspring at risk for anxiety disorders, the authors found that parental panic disorder with comorbid major depression was associated with child behavioral inhibition, the temperamental tendency to be quiet and restrained in unfamiliar situations. To explore whether this association was mediated by environmental factors, the authors examined associations between psychosocial adversity variables and behavioral inhibition in this group of children. METHOD: Subjects included 200 offspring of parents with panic disorder and/or major depression and 84 c

Parenting as a Moderator of the Relation Between Child Inhibited Temperament and Anxiety in Western Contexts: A Systematic Review.

The literature on the role of parenting in the relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is inconsistent, with some literature supporting a moderating role and some literature supporting alternative (e.g., mediating) roles. A systematic review of the evidence that parenting moderates the longitudinal relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is needed. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February and March of 2022 and repeated in January of 2024. Ten articles met criteria for inclusion, with 39 moderation analyses of interest among t

Gender differences in the effects of oppositional behavior on teacher ratings of ADHD symptoms.

H. Abikoff, M. Courtney, W. E. Pelham, and H. S. Koplewicz (1993) presented elementary school teachers with a videotape of a 4th-grade male child exhibiting behavior associated with either Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Comparisons with ratings generated from a control tape (same child exhibiting unremarkable behavior) suggested that oppositional tendencies inflated teacher ratings of ADHD for boys. The term "halo effect" has been used in the literature to refer to the impact of one class of behavior on the perception of another. This st

Safety-seeking and coping behavior during exposure tasks with anxious youth.

This study examined child behavior during exposure tasks and characteristics of the exposure tasks as related to outcomes when treating anxious youth. Participants (aged 7-13) were 87 anxiety-disordered children (37 girls; 50 boys) and their parents (84 mothers; 70 fathers) who completed a 16-session cognitive-behavioral therapy. Videotapes of exposure-based sessions were coded for (a) child use of safety-seeking behavior (SSB) and (b) coping behavior (CB) during exposure, (c) characteristics of the exposure tasks, and (d) child anxiety during exposure. Results indicated that child use of SSB,

Parental Feeding Behaviors and Weight-Related Concerns in Children With Special Needs.

Parental feeding behaviors and concern about child weight are associated with obesity among youth who are typically developing. Little is known about this relationship among parents of youth with special needs, despite these children having higher obesity risk. This study used an online survey to explore associations among parental feeding behaviors, parent weight concerns, demographics, and child weight status in a sample of 356 parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, spina bifida, and Down syndrome. Specific parental feeding behaviors were significantly related to the ch

Disordered eating in early childhood: DRD2 and COMT gene polymorphisms and behavioral features in family trios.

PURPOSE: This study examined the association between dopaminergic genetic variants and environmental factors in young children with disordered eating and their parents. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms of DRD2 (rs1800497) and COMT (rs4680) were analyzed in 57 undereating, 51 overeating, and 44 control children, and in their parents. The quality of mother-child interactions during feeding was evaluated by the Italian adaptation of the scale for the assessment of feeding interaction. Child externalizing, internalizing and dysregulation symptoms were assessed with the child behavior chec

Impact of physical maltreatment on the regulation of negative affect and aggression.

Physically maltreated children are at risk for developing externalizing behavioral problems characterized by reactive aggression. The current experiment tested the relationships between individual differences in a neural index of social information processing, histories of child maltreatment, child negative affect, and aggressive behavior. Fifty boys (17 maltreated) performed an emotion recognition task while the P3b component of the event-related potential was recorded to index attention allocation to angry faces. Children then participated in a peer-directed aggression task. Negative affect

Environmental factors influencing weaning of a young child from mechanical ventilator support.

We examined the contribution of physiologic and environmental variables to the process of weaning a child with chronic respiratory failure from mechanical ventilation support. Surveillance measures, e.g., blood oxygenation, were obtained from a 6-year-old child with multiple medical and developmental disorders who received three different rates (24, 22, and 20 tidal volumes per minute) of intermittent mechanical ventilation. Direct observations were used to calculate rates of aberrant behavior, e.g., aggression toward self, for task versus play settings within the intermittent mechanical venti

Little Agreement on Treating Residual Bipolar Disorder Symptoms in a Child.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of studies on treatment of childhood-onset bipolar disorder and its associated comorbidities, which leads to a wide diversity of opinion on choice and sequencing of treatment options. METHODS: From December 2018 to January 2019, a graphic depiction of medications and weekly ratings of symptoms of mania, depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositional behavior that parents had rated on their 9-year-old child over a period of several years was sent to experts in child and adult bipolar disorder. These responding medical docto

Children's callous-unemotional traits moderate links between their positive relationships with parents at preschool age and externalizing behavior problems at early school age.

BACKGROUND: Growing research on children's traits as moderators of links between parenting and developmental outcomes has shown that variations in positivity, warmth, or responsiveness in parent-child relationships are particularly consequential for temperamentally difficult or biologically vulnerable children. But very few studies have addressed the moderating role of children's callous-unemotional (CU) traits, a known serious risk factor for antisocial cascades. We examined children's CU traits as moderators of links between parent-child Mutually Responsive Orientation (MRO) and shared posit

Observed parenting behaviors interact with a polymorphism of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene to predict the emergence of oppositional defiant and callous-unemotional behaviors at age 3 years.

Using the Durham Child Health and Development Study, this study (N = 171) tested whether observed parenting behaviors in infancy (6 and 12 months) and toddlerhood/preschool (24 and 36 months) interacted with a child polymorphism of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor gene to predict oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors at age 3 years. Child genotype interacted with observed harsh and intrusive (but not sensitive) parenting to predict ODD and CU behaviors. Harsh-intrusive parenting was more strongly associated with ODD and CU for children with a methionin

Anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors: a comparison of anxious parents with and without social anxiety disorder.

While parenting behaviors among anxious parents have been implicated in the familial transmission of anxiety, little is known about whether these parenting behaviors are unique to specific parental anxiety disorders. The current study examined differences in the use of five specific parenting behaviors (i.e., warmth/positive affect, criticism, doubts of child competency, over-control, and granting of autonomy) in anxious parents with (n = 21) and without (n = 45) social anxiety disorder (SAD) during a 5-minute task with their non-anxious child (aged 7-12 years, M = 9.14). Social fears during adolescence: is there an increase in distress and avoidance?

Mid-adolescence is considered as the time of onset for social phobia and is assumed to be related to a normative increase of social fears. People diagnosed with social phobia, however, do not only experience high levels of fear or distress, but also report avoidance behavior. Little attention has been paid to the development of avoidance behavior during adolescence. In the current study, a community sample with 9-17 year olds (n=260) completed a questionnaire derived from the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children (ADIS-C) [Silverman, W.
