Smoking and adverse maternal and child health outcomes in Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies from high-income countries document the causal relationship between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and adverse maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. Less research has been conducted in low and middle income countries, but a burgeoning literature can be found for Brazil. METHODS: We review Brazilian studies of the prevalence of maternal smoking, the relative risk of smoking-attributable adverse MCH outcomes, and present new estimates for these outcomes, using the attributable fraction method. RESULTS: We found that Brazilian studies of the relative risks

The influence of parental education on child mental health in Spain.

PURPOSE: To analyze the association between parental education and offspring's mental health in a nationally representative Spanish sample, and assess the contribution of other socioeconomic factors to the association. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data on 4- to 15-year-olds participating in the 2006 Spanish National Health Survey. Mental health was assessed using the parent-reported Strengths & Difficulties Questionnaire. Parents' respective educational levels were summarized in a single variable. Univariate and multivariate analyses, controlling for family-, child- and paren

The preterm child in dentistry. Behavioural aspects and oral health.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in medical care have enabled more children born preterm to survive and develop as healthy individuals alongside their full-term peers. However, a higher frequency of medical health problems, cognitive and behavioural disturbances, including problems in school, has been reported. There is limited knowledge about how this affects preterm children (PT) in dentistry, and few studies have evaluated behavioural problems related to dental treatments and oral health in PT as compared with full-term control children (C). AIMS: The overall objective was to investigate behaviour

Child abuse and health-related quality of life in adulthood.

Past research has indicated that child abuse is related to mental and physical health conditions and that mental and physical health conditions are related to decreased health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, little is known about the independent relationship between child abuse and HRQOL. For the current analysis, data were from the nationally representative Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study. Multiple linear regression analyses tested the relationships between child abuse and current HRQOL (SF-36) after adjusting for the effects of sociodemographic variables and nu

[Evidence of the impact of vitamin A supplementation on maternal and child health].

The aim of this article was to collect the results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses that evaluated the effect of vitamin A supplementation on child growth and maternal, fetal, and child morbidity and mortality. A detailed search was performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, LILACS, PAHO, CAPES, USP Digital Thesis Library, and UNIFESP Collection Database. A total of 14 studies published from 1993 to 2006 were included in the review. There is evidence that vitamin A supplementation in children is associated with a reduction of 23% to 30% in mortality risk and attenuation in the severity of m

The face of a child: children's oral health and dental education.

Dental care is the most common unmet health care need of children. Those at increased risk for problems with oral health and access to care are from poor or minority families, lack health insurance, or have special health care needs. These factors place more than 52 percent of children at risk for untreated oral disease. Measures of access and parental report indicate unmet oral health needs, but do not provide guidance as to the nature of children's oral health needs. Children's oral health needs can be predicted from their developmental changes and position in the life span. their dependency

The Role of Antioxidants in Child Eye Health with a Focus on Myopia.

The role of antioxidants in pediatric eye health remains an underexplored area, particularly in the prevention and management of refractive errors. According to the World Health Organization, refractive errors are the leading cause of visual impairment among children globally, with myopia being the most prevalent and significant contributor. Oxidative stress and ocular hypoxia are key factors in myopia development and progression. Vision impairment resulting from myopia and associated ocular diseases can have profound consequences, affecting educational performance, psychosocial development, a

Mediators of the Association Between Child Education and Adult Health.

IMPORTANCE: Educational attainment is a key social determinant of cardiometabolic disease in adulthood, yet knowledge about the pathways through which educational experiences in childhood may shape cardiometabolic health is limited. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether associations between educational experiences in childhood and cardiometabolic health in adulthood are mediated by adult socioeconomic status and health behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Participants were from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child C

Disclosing Child Sexual Abuse to a Health Professional: A Metasynthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual abuse is a major public health problem. Its disclosure to a health professional could help to reduce its impact on survivors' lives. The objective of this metasynthesis, combining a systematic review and an analysis of the qualitative studies, was to explore the qualitative literature concerning the experience of a survivor disclosing sexual violence experienced in childhood to a health professional, from the perspective of both. METHODS AND DATA SOURCES: We used four databases and two journals (Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and SSCI, and the Journal of Sexual Abuse and Child A

Intention to Engage in Maternal and Child Health Home Visiting.

Home visiting (HV) programs have the potential to improve maternal and child health. As federal and state initiatives expand the reach of these programs, understanding what factors enhance uptake and retention of the services becomes increasingly important. This qualitative study used a Reasoned Action Model (RAM) and a cultural lens to explore factors influencing the engagement of women with low-income in HV programs. We conducted 21 semi-structured interviews in both English and Spanish in a prenatal clinic in an urban public health department. The constructs most salient for participants we

Maternal education and the multidimensionality of child health outcomes in India.

Maternal education plays a central role in children's health, but there has been little research comparing the role of maternal education across health outcomes. It is important to distinguish child health outcomes from medical care outcomes. Health outcomes such as short-term morbidity and stunting are multifactorial in origin and determined by a range of factors not necessarily under a mother's control. Mother's education, given the necessary structural factors such as medical centres, is likely to lead to increased access to, and uptake of, medical services. Using data from the 2004-05 Indi

Road to the Future: Priorities for Child Health Services Research.

BACKGROUND: Prior health services research (HSR) agendas for children have been published, but major ones are now over 15 years old and do not reflect augmented understanding of the drivers and determinants of children's health; recent changes in the organization, financing, and delivery of health care; a growing emphasis on population health; and major demographic shifts in the population. A policy-relevant research agenda that integrates knowledge gained over the past 2 decades is essential to guide future child HSR (CHSR). We sought to develop and disseminate a robust, domestically focused,

Mental health approaches to child victims of acts of terrorism.

It has long been recognized that human beings exposed to severe stress may develop psychological symptoms. With recent terrorist acts around the world including the New York City World Trade Center September 11, 2001 atrocity, there has been a growing interest in the specific impact of terrorist acts on the victims and witnesses. One area that has received less study is the specific impact on children. This paper reviews some of the general effects of traumatic stress on children and the history of the research in this area including a specific discussion of post-traumatic stress disorder in c

The effects of child health on marital status and family structure.

The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on the effect of child health on marital stability and family structure in an economic framework. We use the 1988 National Health Interview Survey's Child Health Supplement, with a sample of about 9,000 families, to test whether having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's chance of being married and whether it increases her chance of living in an extended family. Using two different measures of child health, we find that having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's likelihood of being married. Our results imply that children in poor hea

Priorities for maternal and child health services: the consumer's perspective.

A convenience sample of 206 inner city department of public health patients were asked to rank the importance of health care services relative to other problems they face. Respondents spontaneously ranked money, unemployment, and housing as their most pressing concerns. When presented with a list of potential problems, housing, crime, and rent were most frequently cited. Health of children and own health were priorities for 15 and 21 respondents respectively. Pregnancy prevention and having a good pregnancy were important for seven individuals. The priorities attached by these medically and so

Acceptability of and need for evening community child health clinics.

An evening child health clinic in a disadvantaged area of a London borough had similar proportions of clinic appointments kept as day clinics offering the same range of services. However, more fathers (45%) brought their children to evening clinics than to day clinics (20%). The evening clinics were particularly convenient to mothers either in employment or at college. The evening sessions were found to be quieter and quicker, but not hurried, and conducive to discussing more personal problems. Over 50% of attendances were solely to have the child weighed and to discuss the child's weight gain

The behaviour, development, and health of the young child: implications for care.

Children with recurrent physical illnesses such as infections of the ears and chest are more likely than average to have developmental and behavioural disorders as well. Specialist skills are needed for the assessment and management of these disorders; the belief that "the child will grow out of it" is rarely correct. Any reorganisation of the child health services should take account of the need for children with developmental and behavioural disorders to be treated within the community by doctors and other health workers with the appropriate skills.
