Latent Profiles of Callous Unemotional Traits and Conduct Problems in Clinically Referred Youth.

This study aimed to examined whether multidimensional callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems (CP) yield distinct latent profiles in a clinically referred sample of youth, and if these profiles differ on externalizing symptoms, aggression, irritability, and CU-related impairment. Participants were 290 clinically referred youth (57.9% male) aged 8–16 years (M = 10.40, SD = 2.33) and primarily identified as White (85.9%). Diagnoses included ADHD (90.7%), ODD (35.3%), and CD (3.5%). Mothers completed the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits, Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Sc

Child and adolescent mental health and psychosocial support interventions: An evidence and gap map of low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders affect about one in seven children and adolescents worldwide. Investment in effective child and adolescent mental health prevention, promotion and care is essential. To date, however, the evidence from this field is yet to be comprehensively collected and mapped. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this evidence and gap map (EGM) is to provide an overview of the existing evidence on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at promoting mental health and reducing or preventing mental health conditions among children and adolescents in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs)

Expectation of sexual images of adults and children elicits differential dorsal anterior cingulate cortex activation in pedophilic sexual offenders and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Pedophilic disorder is characterized by increased sexual interest towards children, with comparatively lesser interest towards adults. In real life, the behavior of subjects with pedophilic disorder is shaped by evaluative processes in response to sexually relevant cues. Therefore, brain activation during anticipation of sexually relevant cues is of potential interest. Whereas previous research demonstrated reduced activation when viewing adult (non-preferred) sexual stimuli in pedophilic sex offenders (PSOs), it is not known if anticipation of preferred versus unpreferred stimuli

The relationship between defenses and symptoms in adolescent psychopathology.

The relationship between defense mechanisms and symptoms was assessed in a group of 196 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Defense mechanisms were measured through the use of the Defense Mechanisms Inventory (DMI); symptoms and problem behaviors were measured with the Youth Self-Report. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that externalizing symptoms are associated with defenses that locate the conflict outside of the self, whereas internalizing symptoms are associated with defenses that locate the conflict within the self. In contrast to previous reports, no gender difference

Are early childhood experiences overrated? A reassessment of maternal deprivation.

The opinion that early maternal deprivation (absence of mother, lack of stimulation, multiple caregivers) results in lasting damage to intellectual and emotional development is generally accepted. In a real-time longitudinal study 137 children, part of a representative sample of Kt. Zürich (Switzerland) who spent the first years in residential nurseries, were investigated at age 12.6 +/- 8 months and again at age 14 years. In IQ and education this group at follow-up was not different from the general population. The children were no less popular than a control group of classmates. There were,

The significance of insecure and disorganized attachment for children's internalizing symptoms: a meta-analytic study.

This meta-analytic review examines the association between attachment and internalizing symptomatology during childhood, and compares the strength of this association with that for externalizing symptomatology. Based on 42 independent samples (N = 4,614), the association between insecurity and internalizing symptoms was small, yet significant (d = 0.15, CI 0.06~0.25) and not moderated by assessment age of internalizing problems. Avoidance, but not resistance (d = 0.03, CI -0.11~0.17) or disorganization (d = 0.08, CI -0.06~0.22), was significantly associated with internalizing symptoms (d = 0.1

Does early family risk and current quality of care predict indiscriminate social behavior in institutionalized Portuguese children?

The current study extends research on the effects of institutionalization, most notably by evaluating the influence of proximal relationship processes over and above prenatal and pre-institutional family experiences. By focusing on current quality of institutional care and the child's early family background, it examines the influence of variations in the institutionalization experience on displays of indiscriminate social behavior, after taking into account potentially confounding pre-admission experiences. Seventy-four Portuguese children (11-30 months) placed in 17 residential institutions

Psychiatric sequelae of surviving childhood cancer.

Increasing survival rates for children with cancer raise questions about the long-term psychosocial impact of the disease and its treatment. Psychiatric evaluations of 114 survivors of childhood malignancies suggest a high rate of adjustment problems, with 59% indicating at least mild psychiatric symptomology. Interviews with former patients highlight the importance of adaptive denial in the face of the uncertainty connected with cancer survival.

Disorganized attachment in infancy: a review of the phenomenon and its implications for clinicians and policy-makers.

Disorganized/Disoriented (D) attachment has seen widespread interest from policy makers, practitioners, and clinicians in recent years. However, some of this interest seems to have been based on some false assumptions that (1) attachment measures can be used as definitive assessments of the individual in forensic/child protection settings and that disorganized attachment (2) reliably indicates child maltreatment, (3) is a strong predictor of pathology, and (4) represents a fixed or static "trait" of the child, impervious to development or help. This paper summarizes the evidence showing that t

Childhood sexual assault victims: long-term outcomes after testifying in criminal court.

We report a longitudinal study of long-term outcomes of participating in criminal cases following child sexual abuse (CSA). In the 1980s, 218 child victim/witnesses took part in a study of short-term sequelae of legal involvement. Approximately 12 years later, 174 of them, as well as a comparison group of 41 matched individuals with no CSA history, were interviewed about their mental health and legal attitudes. Being young when the legal case started was associated with poorer later adjustment. Additionally, even when controlling for psychological problems at the start of the legal case and ot

Cord blood C-reactive protein and ADHD symptoms at age 5: Evidence from two French birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Conditions associated with perinatal inflammation have been identified as risk factors for neurodevelopmental disorders, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, data linking early inflammatory biomarkers with later ADHD symptoms remain scarce. The acute phase C-reactive protein (CRP) is a key marker of systemic inflammation. To date, no studies have examined the association between CRP levels in cord blood (reflecting neonatal inflammation) and subsequent childhood ADHD symptoms. Here, we aimed to investigate whether elevated cord blood CRP concentration

Treating complex trauma: critical interventions with adults who experienced ongoing trauma in childhood.

Complex trauma (CT) most often results from exposure to severe stressors that begin in childhood or adolescence, occur repeatedly, and take place within the caregiver system. Typically, CT involves repeated incidence of maltreatment over an extended period of time (i.e., months or years) that includes emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and witnessing family violence. These individuals experience lifelong difficulties related to self-regulation, relationships, psychological symptoms, alterations in attention and consciousness, self-injury, identity, and cognitive distortion

Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD): Further validation of the parent-report version in a nationally representative U.S. sample of 10- to 17-year-olds.

The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD; Salekin & Hare, 2016) is a new self-report and informant measure designed to assess psychopathic characteristic domains along with symptoms of conduct disorder in youth. Previous factor analytic studies on the PSCD have found that the items are accounted for by a four-factor model reflecting grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, daring-impulsive, and conduct disorder (CD) symptoms. The present study examined the factor structure, psychometric properties, and criterion-related validity of the parent-report version of the PSCD (PSCD-P) i

Neighborhood disorder and social cohesion: A longitudinal investigation of links with maternal cardiometabolic risk one year postpartum.

OBJECTIVE: Neighborhood characteristics can influence cardiometabolic health, including during the perinatal period. However, maternal health research has largely examined the influence of objective neighborhood measures, limiting insights into psychological and social processes. We examined associations of perceived neighborhood disorder and social cohesion with maternal cardiometabolic risk 1 year postpartum and explored potential pathways of psychological distress and physical activity. METHODS: A predominantly low-income sample of Black, Latina, and White postpartum women (n = 987) were p

Aggressivity among sons of substance-abusing fathers: association with psychiatric disorder in the father and son, paternal personality, pubertal development, and socioeconomic status.

An association between childhood aggression and risk for subsequent development of a substance abuse disorder is now well-accepted. In order to better understand the relationship between the presence of paternal substance abuse and aggression among their offspring, 10-12 year old sons of fathers with (n = 34) and without (n = 39) a history of a substance abuse disorder were contrasted on demographics, aggressivity, biological indices of reproductive maturation, and the presence of psychiatric diagnoses. In addition, personality factors, the potential for physical abuse, and psychiatric diagnos

Thinking about children's attachments.

Disordered parental attachment can commit children to lives characterised by relationship difficulties, behaviour problems, educational failure, and poor self-esteem. It is a major root of trans-generational neglect and abuse and frequently underlies mental health problems, drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness, and crime. Early childhood setting of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis function appears to contribute to these costly difficulties. More broadly, the concept of attachment can contribute to defining and managing the psychosocial dimension of routine paediatric care. The current u

A million-dollar work-up for abdominal pain: is it worth it?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pain-predominant-functional gastrointestinal disorders (PP-FGIDs) are common. The diagnosis is clinical and there are no biological markers to characterize these conditions. Despite limited evidence, investigations are commonly performed. The aim of the study was to investigate diagnostic practices, yield, and costs in children with PP-FGIDs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts of all of the children older than 4 years diagnosed as having abdominal pain were reviewed. Results and costs of diagnostic investigations were analyzed. RESULTS: Of 243 children with abdominal pain, 122

Child maltreatment characteristics as predictors of heterogeneity in internalizing symptom trajectories among children in the child welfare system.

This study investigated heterogeneity in the developmental trajectories of internalizing symptoms among 541 children who were involved with the child welfare system and examined child maltreatment characteristics, including types, level of harm, and timing, as predictors of internalizing trajectory patterns. Secondary longitudinal research was conducted using data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being-I, collected from 1999 to 2007 in the United States. Three distinct trajectory groups were identified: high-decreasing; low-increasing; and low-stable Sexual abuse, emotiona

A Rare Case of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis in an Immunized Patient.

This study presents a case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare neurologic disorder characterized by brain inflammation, typically triggered by measles virus reactivation or an abnormal immune response to it. This case involves a five-year-old male child with persistent fever, declining motor function, excessive sleepiness, and myoclonic jerks. MRI indicated potential ischemic changes or encephalitis, while electroencephalography showed SSPE-consistent patterns. Further investigations confirmed SSPE, with elevated IgG levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and positive
