Mathematical disabilities in young primary school children with velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

The aim of the present study was to examine the previously reported mathematical disabilities (MD) of children with Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS) in children of a younger age range. Fourteen children with VCFS (aged 6-10 years) participated in this study. These children were individually matched on sex, IQ, age and parental educational level to a control group of peers, selected from the same classes. A broad range of mathematical abilities were assessed, comprising number reading and writing, number comparison, counting, single-digit arithmetic, multidigit arithmetic and word problem sol

Low back pain in adult female caregivers of children with physical disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) in occupational settings has been studied extensively. There are fewer studies on LBP in domestic settings, especially in an informal caregiving setting. OBJECTIVES: To compare the prevalence of LBP in adult female primary caregivers of children with physical disabilities who need assistance with transfers (eg, moving from a bed to a wheelchair) with the prevalence of LBP in adult female primary caregivers of children with nondisabling medical illnesses and to evaluate the factors associated with LBP. DESIGN: A 15-minute, self-administered, cross-sectional sur

Secondary conditions in children with disabilities: spina bifida as a case example.

This paper examines the concept of secondary conditions and its application in studies of childhood disability focusing on children with spina bifida as a representative group. The "International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health" (World Health Organization, Geneva, 2001) provides a classification of body function/structure, activities, participation and the environment to document dimensions of human functioning in context. The ICF is of value in the study of secondary conditions in two ways: as a conceptual framework for defining impairments, activity limitations and parti

Are RAN- and phonological awareness-deficits additive in children with reading disabilities?

The double-deficit hypothesis (Wolf, M. and Bowers, P.G. (1999) The double-deficit hypothesis for the developmental dyslexias. Journal of Educational Psychology, 91, 415-438) proposes that deficits in phonological processing and rapid automatized naming (RAN) are separable sources of reading dysfunction. Further, the double-deficit hypothesis predicts that the presence of deficits in both phonological processing and RAN have an additive negative influence on reading performance above and beyond that of a single deficit. The purpose of this study was to examine the additive nature of phonologic

Nurses' attitudes toward emotional, sexual, and physical abusers of children with disabilities.

Some studies have linked birth defects, disability, and chronic illness with an increased incidence of child abuse. Nurses who are involved with disabled children face a challenge in preventing child abuse and intervening in cases in which abuse has occurred. Nurse must become aware of the risk factors and signs of abuse, understand the role of their personal attitudes toward abuse and abusers, and develop the skills to intervene effectively and deal with abusers. Thus, the authors of this article undertook a study to ascertain nurses' attitudes about emotional, sexual, and physical abuse of c

Mental health challenges during COVID-19: perspectives from parents with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The global pandemic and subsequent denials, delays, and disruptions in essential daily activities created significant challenges for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and their parents. Public health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic limited access to supports and services required by children with NDDs to maintain their health and well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand the impacts of these public health measures and restrictions on mental health from the perspective of parents with children with NDDs to inform pathways for public health pol

Mental health and behavioural problems in children with XXYY: a comparison with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of children with XXYY has predominantly been defined by comparison to other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies affecting male children; however, the intellectual ability of children with XXYY is lower than children with other sex chromosome aneuploidies trisomies. It is not known to what extent the phenotype identified to date is specific to XXYY, rather than a reflection of lower IQ. This study evaluates the mental health and behaviour of children with XXYY, in comparison to children with intellectual disabilities of heterogeneous genetic origin. METHODS: Fifteen

Physicians' attitudes when faced with life-threatening events in children with severe neurological disabilities.

PURPOSE: Children with severe neurological disabilities are at an increased risk of acute, life-threatening events. We assessed physicians' attitudes when making decisions in these situations. METHODS: We surveyed physicians in pediatric intensive care, neurology, and rehabilitation units in Swiss hospitals. The questionnaire explored participants' attitudes toward life-threatening situations in two scenarios: a child with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) and an infant with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type I. RESULTS: The participation rate was 55% (52/95). There was

Mental Disorders and Learning Disabilities in Children and Adolescents: Learning Disabilities.

Learning disabilities are estimated to affect 5% to 9% of US children. Risk factors include a family history of learning disabilities, environmental factors during gestation or birth, and social adversity. Individuals with learning disabilities may experience social exclusion and bullying, poor self-image, or underachievement. They may struggle with tasks and in settings that depend on reading, mathematical skills and reasoning, or written and verbal communication. The family physician often is the first to be approached by parents regarding learning delays in children. The initial evaluation

Children's acceptance of others with disability: the influence of a disability-simulation program.

Elementary school is a transitional and impressionable period for any child. In inclusive classroom settings, children with disabilities may experience the challenges of acceptance and integration into peer relationships. The experience of children with disabilities in such classrooms can be positive if their classmates are accepting and open. One way to encourage these attitudes is by increasing awareness through disability-simulation. This study evaluates an existing school program, whose goal is to increase acceptance of others with disability. We surveyed students to assess the influence o

Cancer treatment in disabled children.

The incidence of cancer in children with intellectual disability has been poorly documented. We report our experience of treating children and adolescents with cancer and intellectual disability (40 patients), from 2004 to 2018. A treatment-sparing approach was adopted for 6 patients with severe intellectual impairment to minimize toxicity: a child with postpartum asphyxia and medulloblastoma did not receive radiotherapy; 1 patient with mitochondrial encephalopathy and a testicular germ cell tumor did not receive bleomycin and lung metastasectomy; 2 patients (1 with Down + West syndrome + Wilm

Learning of disabled children and their environment.

It has been pointed out that cases of reading disability are rare in Japan due to the specificity of the language structure. Fifty children with learning disabilities were examined both neurologically and psychologically, and they were classified into three groups; the first group had alexia and agraphia (2 cases), 30 cases showing signs of minimal brain dysfunction with choreiform movements of the eyeballs comprised the second group and 18 cases with a history of asphyxia at birth and/or severe jaundice and clumsiness without choreiform movements of the eyeballs formed the third group. The ch

Disabling pansclerotic morphea of children.

Fourteen children with generalized morphea involving all levels of the skin and soft tissues were examined. The term "acral pansclerotic morphea" describes the distribution and the multiple levels of sclerosis. Lymphocytic inflammation and hyaline pannicultitis were observed on biopsy specimens in some cases. Laboratory data were characterized by a polyclonal elevation of gamma-globulin level and by peripheral eosinophilia. Pulmonary changes in five patients and esophageal changes in one imply that acral pansclerotic morphea may be assoicated with mild nonprogressive visceral change. Although

Approaches to communication assessment with children and adults with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.

Communication assessment of people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) has seldom been investigated. Here, we explore approaches and decision making in undertaking communication assessments in this group of people. A questionnaire was sent to UK practitioners. The questionnaire elicited information about assessment approaches used and rationales for assessment choices. Fifty-five speech and language therapists (SLTs) responded. Findings revealed that the Preverbal Communication Schedule, the Affective Communication Assessment and the Checklist of Communication Competenc

The use of weighted vests with children with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities.

Therapists who use sensory integration therapy may recommend that children wear weighted vests as an intervention strategy that they claim may assist in remediating problems such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity, stereotypic behaviors and clumsiness. Seven studies examining weighted vests are reviewed. While there is only a limited body of research and a number of methodological weaknesses, on balance, indications are that weighted vests are ineffective. There may be an arguable case for continued research on this intervention but weighted vests cannot be recommended for clinical application

The effect of background elements of pictures on the visual attention among ASD children with intellectual disabilities, children with intellectual disabilities and typical development: Evidence from eye-tracking and fMRI.

Traditional picture books for children come with colourful images and a multitude of elements to attract attention and increase the reading interest of typical-developing (TD) children. However, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are less capable of filtering out unimportant elements in pictures and focusing on social items (e.g., human faces). This study proposed that the removal of background and less important elements in the pictures of children's storybooks could facilitate better attention and enhance children with ASD's focus on the main object and thus the intended meaning of

Exploring Mental Health, Self-Compassion and Support in New Parents of Children With Disabilities vs. Nondisabled Children.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to determine whether the type of disability (intellectual, motor, hearing, or autism spectrum) differentiates mental health, parental stress, self-compassion and perceived support among parents of children aged 0-7 years. METHODS: The study took place anonymously from February to May 2023 using online questionnaires. Instruments such as GHQ-12, PSS-10, PSI-4-SF, Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and MSPSS were used to assess mental health, parental stress, self-compassion and social support. Tools were translated, adapted and reliability tested for Polish conditions. RE
