Experiments were performed in chloralose-anesthetized cats to characterize intravascular mechanoreceptro input to renal nerve activity in the intact and vagotomized sinoaortic-denervated states. High-pressure intravascular mechanoreceptors were stimulated by rises in arterial pressure caused by norepinephrine. Low-pressure intravascular mechanoreceptors were stimulated by progressive blood volume expansion (14-23%) at a rate of 4.4 or 17.6 ml/min. In addition, veratrine was used to stimulate directly both high- and low-pressure receptors. In the intact animal the administration of norepinephri

In 4 cats all vestibular afferents in one labyrinth except those innervating the saccular macula were transected and allowed to degenerate. 23--53 days after the initial surgery the central connections of the remaining saccular nerve were studied under chloralose anesthesia. Stimulation of the saccular nerve evoked N1 field potentials in the ipsilateral lateral and descending vestibular nuclei; little or no field potential activity was seen in the superior nucleus. The distribution of field potentials overlapped with that of neurons of origin of the vestibulospinal tracts. Forty-two neurons in

Intracoronary injection of veratrum alkaloids is known to stimulate ventricular receptors with vagal afferents resulting in bradycardia and hypotension. This study examined the role of veratrum-sensitive ventricular receptors in the control of renin secretion in eight chloralose-anesthetized dogs. Hemorrhage of 10% caused renin release to increase significantly from a control of 778 to 1,971 ng/min. Arterial pressure and renal blood flow did not change significantly. The augmented release of renin during volume depletion was virtually abolished by injection of cryptenamine (2 microgram/kg) int

The thoracic cardiac nerves were stimulated in each of 21 dogs anesthetized with alpha chloralose. Recordings were made of heart rate, blood pressure, and contractile force from all four cardiac chambers. Walton-Brodie strain-gauge arches were sutured to both atria, and to three locations of each ventricle, representing both anterior and posterior surfaces. The functional autonomic components of each nerve were summarized and classified into four basic types. Types I and II were both located medial to the thoracic vagi. These were shown to contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic component

Studies to test the effects of partial ganglionic blockade on renal and cardiovascular function were carried out in 16 mongrel dogs that under chloralose anesthesia had been subjected to full thickness flame burns to approximately 25% of their body surface. All animals received intravenous fluid replacement according to the same resuscitation formula we use in burned children. Half of the animals received 0.3 mg/kg of chlorisondamine hydrochloride 40 minutes after the burn; the remaining 8 dogs received only the vehicle. Among the variables monitored before burning and before and after blockad

I.v. administration of (--)-delta9-trans-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta 9-THC) to chloralose-anesthetized cats produced a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. Studies conducted to investigate the mechanism of these changes revealed that the hypotensive and bradycardic effects of delta 9-THC (0.1 mg/kg, i.v.) could be significantly antagonized following intraventricular (i.v.t.) perfusion with alpha-adrenergic receptor blocking agent phentolamine, while a larger dose of delta 9-THC (0.25 mg/kg, i.v.) still produced significant hypotension and bradycardia. I.v.t. perfusion of phentolamine (10

We have reported that subeffective doses of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) dexketoprofen trometamol enhances micro-opioid receptor agonist fentanyl antinociception. The aim of this study was to assess if this effect can also be observed with other new cyclooxygenase-inhibitors such as nitroparacetamol, and in responses to high intensity electrical stimulation (wind-up). Single motor units were recorded in male Wistar rats under alpha-chloralose anaesthesia. The antinociceptive effect of fentanyl was studied alone and in the presence of subeffective doses of dexketoprofen trome

To address the effect of electroacupuncture (Ea) on the autonomic nerve activity, responses of arteriole blood pressure (BP), intragastric pressure (IGP) and parasympathetic vagal nerve activity (VNA) to Ea were investigated in alpha-chloralose anesthetized rats. The acupoint: Hoku (Li-4) was tested with two different stimulation frequencies (2 and 20 Hz). Decrease in VNA and basal IGP associated with elevation of BP were elicited during Ea at Hoku with stimulation intensity of 20 times of motor threshold. The pattern of response induced by the low frequency Ea (LFEa) was different from that b

The hypertensive rat model was made by chronic stress of electric foot-shocks and noises. On such hypertensive rats, when anesthetized with urethane and chloralose, the electroacupuncture (EA) to bilateral "Zusanli (st.36)" acupoints for 20 min, could result in a depressor (including both systolic and diastolic pressure) and bradycardiac response as well as an attenuation in the maximum of left ventricular pressure, end diastolic pressure and +/-dp/dt. In power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability aspect, EA could increase all total variance, very low frequency component, low frequency

The involvement of rapheal and medial parts of the medullary reticular formation in both generation of airway reflexes and changes in breathing were studied in 18 chloralose or pentobarbitone anaesthetized, non-paralyzed cats. Chemical lesions to the medullary midline region (0-4 mm rostral to the obex) produced by localized injections of the neurotoxin kainic acid regularly abolished the cough reflexes evoked from the tracheobronchial and laryngopharyngeal regions and in most cases also the expiration reflex induced from the glottal area. The aspiration reflex elicited from the nasopharynx wa

Since vertigo is known to be caused by vertebrobasilar arterial occlusive disease (ex. vertebrobasilar insufficiency; VBI), an electrophysiological study was performed to examine the effects of a unilateral vertebral artery (VA) occlusion on the neuronal activities of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and vestibular ganglion (VG) in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats. Single neuronal activity in the MVN and VG was recorded extracellularly with a glass-insulated silver wire microelectrode. When the unilateral VA was occluded for 5 min. the spontaneous firing rate in the MVN was altered as fol

The effects of the opiate antagonist naloxone (0.4 mg.kg-1, i.v.) on carotid chemoreceptor and ventilatory responses to graded steady-state levels of hypoxia and hypercapnia were investigated in two groups of cats: chronically normoxic and chronically hypoxic. The cats of the latter group were exposed to PIO2 of about 70 mm Hg at sea level for 3-4 weeks and showed an attenuated response to hypoxia. All cats were tested under alpha-chloralose anesthesia. Naloxone treatment did not increase appreciably carotid chemoreceptor activity or its responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia in either cat group

The effects of left atrial stretch (AS) and carotid occlusion (CO) on the single unit activity of anterior and posterior hypothalamus (AH and PH) were investigated in 40 urethan-chloralose-anesthetized cats. A total of 185 units with spontaneous discharge were recorded. 46.3% (44/95) of the neurons in AH and 23.3% (21/90) of those in PH were responsive to AS. Majority of the neurons affected by AS exhibited a decrease in firing rate. A few units only showed transient response during the onset and release of AS (on-off response). Out of the 185 units, 85 units were tested by both AS and CO, and

Clinical evidence implicates the cerebral cortex in the genesis of ECG changes and cardiac arrhythmias. Such findings are not infrequent following acute cortical stroke and during partial seizures. Electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex, however, only rarely and inconsistently results in cardiac changes. When encountered, attendant alterations in blood pressure and respiration occur; consequently, it is unclear whether the cardiac effects are primary or secondary to these. Phasic insular cortex microstimulation linked to the ECG cycle, a new technique, elicits only heart rate effects, e

In 18 cats anaesthetized with alpha-chloralose, we recorded from thin myelinated and unmyelinated articular afferents of the medial articular nerve of the knee joint. Bradykinin was injected intra-arterially close to the knee, alone and in combination with prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and changes of the responses of single afferents to movements of the knee were monitored. Bradykinin changed the mechanosensitivity in 20 of 28 afferents inducing movement sensitivity in initially unresponsive units, lowering the threshold for movements in high-threshold afferents and/or enhancing pre-existing respon

1. In cats anaesthetized with a mixture of chloralose and urethane, stimulation of cardiac receptors by left atrial injections of veratridine had little or no effect on pulmonary ventilation but caused bradycardia, systemic hypotension and hindlimb vasodilation with a latency of 3.3 s. 2. The hindlimb vasodilatation was due largely, if not entirely, to a reduction in sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity. 3. Similar cardiovascular responses occurred when the arterial blood pressure was maintained constant and also in artificially ventilated animals. 4. When the cardiac receptors were excited du

The effect of combined stimulation of peripheral chemo- and baroreceptors upon sympathetic discharge was studied in cats anesthetized with chloralose and urethan, immobilized with tricuran, and artificially ventilated. The right carotid sinus was arterially isolated, the left sinus nerve and both vago-sympathetic trunks were cut. A rise of pressure in isolated carotid sinus from 100 to 200 mm Hg produced an inhibition of sympathetic activity recorded simultaneously from the inferior cardiac and the renal nerves. For a combined chemo- and baroreceptor stimulation, the carotid sinus was perfused

1. The effects of intraportal and hepatic arterial infusion of prostaglandins E1 and E2 on liver function and circulation was studied in fasting chloralose anaesthetized cats. 2. Infusion of the prostaglandins at rates of 0-1, 1-0 and 5-0 mug/kg.min caused a 35-40% increase in bile flow. This may be explained by a decrease in the reabsorption or a secretion of sodium ions by the ductular cells. The canalicular bile production and bile flow. In order to throw light on the problems related to the magnitude and the possibility of maintaining pressor response in the case of bilateral carotid occlusion (BCO), acute experiments were carried out on heparinized cats in chloralose-urethane narcosis and spontaneous respiration. The perfusion pressure in a hind leg autoperfused with a roller pump with a constant flow and the arterial blood pressure were recorded electromanometrically. A study was made of the changes taking place under the effect of BCO in the normal animal, in animals in a haemorrhagic state, after pharmacological alpha-adr

Experiments, with recording of gastric volume, were performed in chloralosed cats. Topical hypothalamic stimulations produced vagally mediated increases in volume by two mechanisms. One type of response, due to central inhibition of vagal excitatory tone was induced from the defence area and eliminated by atropine or vagotomy. The other type of response, far less commonly encountered, remained after atropine and spinal cord section, but was abolished by vagotomy. The latter type was not induced from any well defined hypothalamic region, and had a high stimulation threshold. While sham feeding
