Quorum sensing (QS) is a molecular communication mechanism among bacterial cells. It is critical in regulating virulence factors, motility, antibiotic resistance, and biofilm formation. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen linked to healthcare-associated infections, food poisoning, and biofilm formation. Treating infections caused by pathogenic bacteria has become a challenge due to the development of multi-antibiotic resistance upon continuous exposure of bacteria to antibiotics. An alternative strategy to conventional antimicrobials to decrease the bacterial patho

The resilience of biofilms makes it challenging to treat bacterial infections using conventional antibiotics. The study aimed to assess the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, anti-quorum-sensing, and cytotoxic activities of acetone extracts of Cannabis "Gorilla Glue 1" against fish pathogens. Antibacterial activity was determined using the two-fold serial microdilution method, while anti-biofilm activity was assessed using a modified crystal violet staining in vitro assay. Anti-quorum-sensing activity was evaluated via inhibition of violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum (ATCC 12472). Cyt

Inflammation is a necessary process to control infection. However, exacerbated inflammation, acute or chronic, promotes deleterious effects in the organism. Violacein (viola), a quorum sensing metabolite from the Gram-negative bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum, has been shown to protect mice from malaria and to have beneficial effects on tumors. However, it is not known whether this drug possesses anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, we investigated whether viola administration is able to reduce acute and chronic autoimmune inflammation. For that purpose, C57BL/6 mice were intraperiton

Recalcitrant wounds in diabetic patients are difficult to treat and often require debridement and surgical intervention. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common pathogen isolated from the diabetic wounds, further delays healing. This study investigates the wound-healing properties of the postbiotics of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 2034 in MRSA-infected diabetic rats. Ethyl acetate extract (EAE) of L. plantarum was prepared, and its antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties against various pathogens were determined. EAE exhibited broad spectrum antimicrobial activity agains

The antimicrobial activity of atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma has been exhaustively characterised, however elucidation of the interactions between biomolecules produced and utilised by bacteria and short plasma exposures are required for optimisation and clinical translation of cold plasma technology. This study characterizes the effects of non-thermal plasma exposure on acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-dependent quorum sensing (QS). Plasma exposure of AHLs reduced the ability of such molecules to elicit a QS response in bacterial reporter strains in a dose-dependent manner. Short exposur

Antimicrobial resistance among pathogenic bacteria has become a global threat to human health. Due to poor progress in development of new antimicrobial drugs, there is a need for the development of novel alternative strategies to combat the problem of multidrug resistance. Moreover, there is focus on ecofriendly approach for the synthesis nanoparticles having efficient medicinal properties including antivirulence properties to tackle the emergence of multi-drug resistance. Targeting quorum sensing controlled virulence factors and biofilms has come out to be a novel anti-infective drug target.

Quorum sensing (QS) inhibition has emerged as a promising target for directed drug design, providing an appealing strategy for developing antimicrobials, particularly against infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens. In this study, we designed and synthesized a total of 33 β-nitrostyrene derivatives using 1-nitro-2-phenylethane (NPe) as the lead compound, to target the facultative anaerobic bacterial pathogen Serratia marcescens. The QS-inhibitory effects of these compounds were evaluated using S. marcescens NJ01 and the reporter strain Chromobacterium violaceum CV026. Among the 33 new β-

The increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics has led researchers to find new compounds or find combinations between different compounds with potential antibacterial action and with the ability to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. Polyoxotungstates (POTs) are inorganic clusters that may fulfill that need, either individually or in combination with antibiotics. Herein, we report the ability of the polyoxotungstates (POTs) with Wells-Dawson P2W18, P2W17, P2W15, and Preyssler P5W30 type structures to differently affect Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms, either s
