Olfactory relationships of the telencephalon and diencephalon in the rabbit. II. An autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase study of the efferent connections of the anterior olfactory nucleus.

The efferent connections of the anterior olfactory nucleus in the female albino rabbit have been studied using the autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase methods for tracing axonal pathways. Following a unilateral injection of 3H-leucine into the olfactory peduncle, radioactively labeled efferent projections from the anterior olfactory nucleus were traced into all layers of the ipsilateral main olfactory bulb beneath the olfactory nerve layer and through the ipsilateral anterior limb of the anterior commissure and plexiform layer of the medial side of the cerebral hemisphere to the deep h

Neural effects of acupuncture on stroke patients with motor dysfunction: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been used in many studies to explore the neural mechanism of acupuncture in patients with post-stroke motor dysfunction. Inconsistent results have been found in these studies, however. This activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was designed to quantitatively integrate changes in brain activity and the neurological effects of acupuncture on patients with motor dysfunction after stroke. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, China Science and Technology Journal Database, the China Biology Me

Clinical response to Vim's thalamic stereotactic radiosurgery for essential tremor is associated with distinctive functional connectivity patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder. Drug-resistant ET can benefit from standard surgical stereotactic procedures (deep brain stimulation, thalamotomy) or minimally invasive high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) or stereotactic radiosurgical thalamotomy (SRS-T). Resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) is a non-invasive imaging method acquired in absence of a task. We examined whether rs-fMRI correlates with tremor score on the treated hand (TSTH) improvement 1 year after SRS-T. METHODS: We included 17 consecutive patients treated with left unilateral SRS-T in Mars

Neuroimaging study of sex differences in the neuropathology of cocaine abuse.

BACKGROUND: Female and male substance abusers differ in their disease patterns and clinical outcomes. An important question in addiction neuroscience thus concerns the neural substrates underlying these sex differences. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to examine what is known of the neural mechanisms involved in the sex differences between substance abusers. METHODS: We reviewed neuroimaging studies that addressed sex differences in cerebral perfusion deficits after chronic cocaine use and in regional brain activation during pharmacologic challenge and cue-induced craving. We also present resul

Long-Range Projections of Cortical GABAergic Neurons to the Midline Dorsal Thalamic Nuclei in GAD67-GFP Mice.

BACKGROUND: Cortical γ-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) neurons are characterized primarily as local inhibitory interneurons that modulate cortical pyramidal neuronal activity. However, emerging evidence has demonstrated that some of them may project to subcortical structures, such as the midline dorsal thalamic nuclei (MDTN), which play a pivotal role in sensory information transmission and emotional regulation. The present study aimed to investigate whether cortical GABAergic neurons project to the MDTN. METHODS: To address this question, this study combined retrograde tracing with immuno

Whole-Brain Monosynaptic Afferent Projections to the Cholecystokinin Neurons of the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the principal pacemaker driving the circadian rhythms of physiological behaviors. The SCN consists of distinct neurons expressing neuropeptides, including arginine vasopressin (AVP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), cholecystokinin (CCK), and so on. AVP, VIP, and GRP neurons receive light stimulation from the retina to synchronize endogenous circadian clocks with the solar day, whereas CCK neurons are not directly innervated by retinal ganglion cells and may be involved in the non-photic regulation of the circadian c

Neonatal neurobehavior and diffusion MRI changes in brain reorganization due to intrauterine growth restriction in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affects 5-10% of all newborns and is associated with a high risk of abnormal neurodevelopment. The timing and patterns of brain reorganization underlying IUGR are poorly documented. We developed a rabbit model of IUGR allowing neonatal neurobehavioral assessment and high resolution brain diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of the study was to describe the pattern and functional correlates of fetal brain reorganization induced by IUGR. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: IUGR was induced in 10 New Zealand fetal rabbits by ligation

Are patients with Parkinson's disease blind to blindsight?

In Parkinson's disease, visual dysfunction is prominent. Visual hallucinations can be a major hallmark of late stage disease, but numerous visual deficits also occur in early stage Parkinson's disease. Specific retinopathy, deficits in the primary visual pathway and the secondary ventral and dorsal pathways, as well as dysfunction of the attention pathways have all been posited as causes of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease. We present data from patients with Parkinson's disease that contrast with a known neuro-ophthalmological syndrome, termed 'blindsight'. In this syndrome, there is an a

A visuo-somatomotor pathway through superior parietal cortex in the macaque monkey: cortical connections of areas V6 and V6A.

This report addresses the connectivity of the cortex occupying middle to dorsal levels of the anterior bank of the parieto-occipital sulcus in the macaque monkey. We have previously referred to this territory, whose perimeter is roughly circumscribed by the distribution of interhemispheric callosal fibres, as area V6, or the 'V6 complex'. Following injections of wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into this region, we examined the laminar organization of labelled cells and axonal terminals to attain indications of relative hierarchical status among the network o

The role of epileptic activity in hippocampal and "remote" cerebral lesions induced by kainic acid.

Kainic acid (KA) was injected systemically, intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) and focally in the amygdala and other deep brain structures in the rat. EEG and behavioral changes were studied in relation to the neuropathology which developed subsequently. Following intra-amygdaloid KA injection, diazepam blocked the epileptic events induced by the toxin, and abolished the neuronal loss usually seen in the lateral septum, claustrum, and contralateral cortex and hippocampus. The lesions in medial thalamic structures and ipsilateral hippocampus were also reduced by diazepam. Prior transection of t

Sequelae of parenteral domoic acid administration in rats: comparison of effects on different metabolic markers in brain.

Parenterally administered domoic acid, a structural analog of the excitatory amino acids glutamic acid and kainic acid, has specific effects on brain histology in rats, as measured using different anatomic markers. Domoic acid-induced convulsions affects limbic structures such as hippocampus and entorhinal cortex, and different anatomic markers can detect these neurotoxic effects to varying degrees. Here we report effects of domoic acid administration on quantitative indicators of brain metabolism and gliosis. Domoic acid, 2.25 mg/kg i.p., caused stereotyped behavior and convulsions in approxi

Regional cerebral metabolism alterations affect resting-state functional connectivity in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) is a reliable technique to quantify regional neural glucose metabolism even with major depressive disorder (MDD) heterogeneous features. Previous study proposed that in the resting-state (RS), pairs of brain regions whose regional glucose metabolic rates were significantly correlated were functionally associated. This synchronicity indicates a neuronal metabolic and functional interaction in high energy efficient brain regions. In this study, a multimode method was used to identify the RS-FC patterns based on regional metabolism changes, a

Efferent connections of the caudate nucleus, including cortical projections of the striatum and other basal ganglia: an autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase investigation in the cat.

Tritiated tracer was injected into the head of the caudate nucleus in cats. Following such injections, labeling is present within extensive regions of both the globus pallidus and entopeduncular nucleus, where it presents a mottled or meshlike appearance. These projections are topographically organized in that there is simple correspondence between the mediolateral, dorsoventral, and rostrocaudal origin of the caudate projection and its input to the globus pallidus and entopeduncular nucleus. Transported tracer is also present within the substantia nigra, where it is most abundant within the p

Differential psychostimulant-induced activation of neural circuits in dopamine transporter knockout and wild type mice.

Dopamine (DA) is a neurotransmitter that has been implicated in a wide variety of psychiatric disorders that include attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and drug abuse. Recently, we have been working with a mouse in which the gene for the DA transporter (DAT) has been disrupted. This mouse is hyperactive in the open field, displays an inability to inhibit ongoing behaviors, and is deficient on learning and memory tasks. Psychostimulants such as amphetamine and methylphenidate attenuate the hyperlocomotion of the mutants, but stimulate activity of the wild type (WT)

From classic models to new pathways: unraveling the anatomy and function of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus in language processing.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the anatomy and function of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), focusing on its role in language processing. Through a comprehensive systematic review and detailed anatomical dissections, we aim to elucidate the IFOF's anatomical organization, its contributions to language processing, and its complex three-dimensional configuration, ultimately enhancing the safety and precision of neurosurgical practices. METHODS: This study employed a two-part methodology: (1) anatomical dissections using Klinger's technique on three human brains, which were fix

Dopamine D1-D2 receptor heteromer expression in key brain regions of rat and higher species: Upregulation in rat striatum after cocaine administration.

BACKGROUND: Dopamine receptors interact with other receptors to form heterooligomers. One such complex, the D1-D2 heteromer, demonstrated in cultured striatal neurons and rat striatum has been linked to drug addiction, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, depression and anhedonia. METHODS: D1-D2 heteromer expression was evaluated using in situ proximity ligation assay, in parallel with cellular colocalization of D1 and D2 mRNA using in situ hybridization in 19 different key rat brain regions. Expression in higher species and changes in rat striatum after repeated cocaine administration were ev
