SARS-CoV-2 and climate factors: a study between linear regression and quantile regression model using longitudinal count data.

BACKGROUND: Regression is the most popular statistical tool used to assess the relationship between predictors and response variables. SARS-CoV-2 infections counts, however are typically right-skewed, heteroskedastic, and show episodic surges. In longitudinal epidemic data, mean-based linear regression-which focusses on the conditional mean under homoscedasticity and normality assumptions- may provide an incomplete representation of transmission dynamics, particularly when extreme outbreak periods disproportionately influence estimates. Quantile regression offers a flexible alternative by allo

[Prediction of dynamics of suitable producing areas for Ophiopogon japonicus under human activities and climate change based on Biomod2 ensemble modeling].

This study employed an ensemble species distribution model Biomod2 integrated with ArcGIS spatial analysis and utilized climate, soil, and human footprint data to predict the potential suitable habitats for Ophiopogon japonicus under various scenarios and to assess the key drivers governing its distribution. RESULTS:: revealed that mean diurnal temperature range, temperature seasonality, and human footprint were the primary factors determining its distribution. When anthropogenic disturbances were excluded, the area of highly suitable habitats expanded significantly, extending notably into reg

Projecting tick-borne encephalitis risk in Sweden under climate change scenarios: a high-resolution spatio-temporal modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a serious vector-borne neurological disease in Europe, with a complex transmission cycle involving ticks of genus Ixodes, animal hosts, environmental and climatic determinants. METHODS: We modelled annual Geocoded Swedish TBE case data for the period 2005–2023 as a log-Gaussian Cox process in relation to population, environmental and climate data, and wildlife citizen science reports at high spatial resolution. We used the computationally efficient Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) and projected the future TBE incidence using fifteen re

Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling and prediction of malaria cases in Tanzania mainland (2016-2023): unveiling associations with climate and intervention factors.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to pose a significant global health challenge, affecting approximately 200 million individuals annually and resulting in an estimated 600,000 deaths each year. In Tanzania, malaria ranks among the top five most commonly reported diseases in healthcare facilities, thus contributing to a substantial burden on the healthcare system. This study analyzed aggregated monthly malaria count data for the period 2016-2023, to explore spatio-temporal trends in malaria risk and assess the effects of climatic factors and vector control interventions across Tanzania mainland reg

Old health risks in new places? An ecological niche model for I. ricinus tick distribution in Europe under a changing climate.

Climate change will likely have impacts on disease vector distribution. Posing a significant health threat in the 21st century, risk of tick-borne diseases may increase with higher annual mean temperatures and changes in precipitation. We modeled the current and future potential distribution of the Ixodes ricinus tick species in Europe. The Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP) was utilized to predict potential distributions of I. ricinus based on current (1990-2010 averages) and future (2040-2060 averages) environmental variables. A ten model best subset was created out of a possib

Modelling spatial distribution of snails transmitting parasitic worms with importance to human and animal health and analysis of distributional changes in relation to climate.

The environment, the on-going global climate change and the ecology of animal species determine the localisation of habitats and the geographical distribution of the various species in nature. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of such changes on snail species not only of interest to naturalists but also of importance to human and animal health. The spatial distribution of freshwater snail intermediate hosts involved in the transmission of schistosomiasis, fascioliasis and paramphistomiasis (i.e. Bulinus globosus, Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Lymnaea natalensis) were modelled by th

Climate-driven redistribution of Hyalomma marginatum (Ixodida: Ixodidae): robust ecological niche modeling reveals future expansion and quantifies projection uncertainty.

Hyalomma marginatum (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is the principal vector of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and an emerging public health concern because climate change may facilitate its establishment in regions where it is currently absent. We used ecological niche modeling to characterize the current climatic suitability of H. marginatum and project its future redistribution across the Old World under CMIP6 climate scenarios. Models were calibrated using a comprehensive dataset of spatially filtered occurrence records and bioclimatic predictors within a biologically informed accessible

Remotely sensed evapotranspiration-based ensemble streamflow modeling in an ungauged watershed under climate and land use/cover change, North Korea.

Hydrological assessment in ungauged watersheds is challenging due to the lack of streamflow observations, and remote sensing (RS) products have emerged as viable in such regions. However, previous studies have relied on a single optimal parameter set and have not considered uncertainty into scenario based simulations. To address this gap, this study evaluated the applicability of an RS-evapotranspiration (ET)-based calibration framework using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), incorporating multiple behavioral parameter sets to explicitly account for equifinality. Six scenarios were ev

Joint Modeling of Wheat Head Blast and Water-Deficit Risks for Climate-Informed Sowing Calendar Decisions for Rainfed Wheat in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Wheat blast, caused by the Pyricularia oryzae Triticum lineage, is a major constraint to wheat expansion in the Brazilian Cerrado. Delayed sowing is often recommended for disease avoidance; however, late sowing can increase the risk of water deficit. This study quantifies the joint risks from head blast and water deficit in the Brazilian Cerrado to inform sowing-date recommendations. Using daily weather data from a 62-year period (1961 to 2023), crop phenology was simulated based on an accumulated growing degree day approach. Heading and maturity dates were estimated for six sowing dates defin

Impact of climate change on the toxicity of bisphenol A in Mytilus galloprovincialis and assessment of phycoremediation using Nannochloropsis salina via a multi-biomarker strategy and modeling.

In the current study, the mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, exposed to four varying temperatures (17, 20, 23, and 26 °C), were contaminated with 50 μg/L of bisphenol A both with and without Nannochloropsis salina. The toxicity evaluation is determined by quantifying various biomarkers related to oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and cellular damage. The key findings indicate that the toxicity of bisphenol A is heightened by rising temperature. The impact of bisphenol A is most evident at 26 °C, leading to excessive production of reactive oxygen species, depletion of non-enzymatic antioxidants,

Climate-driven invasion of Pomacea canaliculata and Angiostrongylus cantonensis transmission risk: Ecological niche modeling forecasts and public-health governance recommendations.

Global climate change is rapidly reshaping species distribution patterns worldwide. Pomacea canaliculata (golden apple snail), an important invasive species in many countries, has experienced accelerated range expansion driven by climate change and anthropogenic activities. Owing to its high phenotypic plasticity, broad environmental tolerance, and high fecundity, this species causes severe agricultural damage and biodiversity loss. Importantly, P. canaliculata is a highly competent intermediate host of the rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the causative agent of human eosinophilic men

Assessing environmental sustainability of a vital crop in a critical region: Investigating climate change impacts on agriculture using the SWAT model and HWA method.

Drought is an occurrence that brings about significant changes to the structure of areas. Its influence is especially noticeable in important regions with dry and semi-dry weather patterns, leading to a range of difficulties including interruptions in food distribution systems, lack of water, health problems, economic declines, increased migration, and inadequate energy supply. The Ardabil plain, located in Asia and the northern-western region of Iran, plays a pivotal role in crop productions within an arid environment and holds significant political importance for the country. The main object

Dynamic modeling and data fitting of climatic and environmental factors and people's behavior factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) appear to be a multi-wave outbreak with unknown mechanisms. We investigate the effects of climatic and environmental factors and changes in people's behavior factors that may be caused by external factors: temperature, relative humidity, and school opening and closing. METHODS: Distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) and dynamic model are used to research multi-wave outbreaks of HFMD. Climatic and environmental factors impact on transmission rate β(t) is modeled through DLNM and then substituted into this relationship to establish the dynamic mo

Modeling the impact of variable climatic factors on the crossover of Culex restauns and Culex pipiens (Diptera: culicidae), vectors of West Nile virus in Illinois.

The aim of this study was to model the impact of temperature on the timing of the seasonal shift in relative proportion of Culex restuans Theobald and Culex pipiens L. in Illinois. The temporal pattern of West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission in the midwest exhibits a late summer to early fall peak in activity, which parallels the temporal increase in the abundance of Cx. pipiens. The daily number of egg rafts oviposited by each species has been monitored at multiple surveillance sites in Urbana-Champaign in central Illinois for more than 13 years. The time when t

Prediction of Potential Habitat Distribution of Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm. Under Climate Change Based on a Multi-Model Ensemble Framework.

Understanding how medicinal plant distributions shift in response to climate change is essential for developing forward-looking conservation strategies. Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm., a tree fern from the family Dicksoniaceae, is not only ecologically significant but also holds considerable medicinal value. Despite its importance, wild populations of this species have been steadily declining due to ongoing habitat loss and unsustainable harvesting. To address this concern, we constructed a multi-model ensemble framework that integrated nine different algorithms, including Generalized Linear Mo

Too Hot, Too Wet: Bayesian Spatial Modeling of Climate-Driven Salmonella Risk in New South Wales, Australia, 1991-2022.

Salmonella infections contribute significantly to gastrointestinal-related hospitalisations in Australia and remain a major global public health concern. Although seasonal patterns in Salmonella incidence have been documented globally, there is limited evidence on the influence of climatic factors, particularly rainfall, humidity, flooding, and temperature, in the Australian context. This study investigated the relationship between climatic extremes and Salmonella infections across Local Health Districts (LHDs) in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, using a Spatial Bayesian Distributed Lag Non-L

Prediction of dengue fever outbreaks using climate variability and Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques in a stochastic susceptible-infected-removed model.

The recent increase in the global incidence of dengue fever resulted in over 2.7 million cases in Latin America and many cases in Southeast Asia and has warranted the development and application of early warning systems (EWS) for futuristic outbreak prediction. EWS pertaining to dengue outbreaks is imperative; given the fact that dengue is linked to environmental factors owing to its dominance in the tropics. Prediction is an integral part of EWS, which is dependent on several factors, in particular, climate, geography, and environmental factors. In this study, we explore the role of increased

Spatially-Explicit Simulation Modeling of Ecological Response to Climate Change: Methodological Considerations in Predicting Shifting Population Dynamics of Infectious Disease Vectors.

Poikilothermic disease vectors can respond to altered climates through spatial changes in both population size and phenology. Quantitative descriptors to characterize, analyze and visualize these dynamic responses are lacking, particularly across large spatial domains. In order to demonstrate the value of a spatially explicit, dynamic modeling approach, we assessed spatial changes in the population dynamics of Ixodes scapularis, the Lyme disease vector, using a temperature-forced population model simulated across a grid of 4 × 4 km cells covering the eastern United States, using both modeled (
