Production of staphylococcal enterotoxins and TSST-1 by coagulase negative staphylococci isolated from ruminant mastitis.

The production of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 by 40 coagulase negative staphylococci isolated from sheep, goat and cow mastitis was studied. Both ELISA double sandwich and Western blot were used to detect the production of these toxins. Only two strains of S. xylosus were enterotoxigenic, producing SEC. TSST-1 was seen to be produced by 5 strains of S. xylosus, 1 S. sciuri and 2 S. epidermidis. Results obtained by ELISA and by Western blot agreed in all cases except in one strain of S. epidermidis which was only positive using ELISA.

Species-level reporting of Coagulase-negative staphylococci with MALDI-TOF does not impact clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are common blood culture contaminants, yet distinguishing true infection from contamination remains challenging. In January 2023, we implemented routine species-level CoNS reporting. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of this intervention on antibiotic utilization, accuracy of true bacteremia diagnosis and clinical outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of adult inpatients with CoNS-positive blood cultures from July 2022 to June 2023. Two randomly selected cohorts; pre and post-implementation were compared. The primary ou

In Vivo Effectiveness of Several Antimicrobial Locks To Eradicate Intravascular Catheter Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Biofilms.

Tunneled central venous catheter (TCVC) related infection remains a challenge in the care of hemodialysis patients. We aimed to determine the best antimicrobial lock therapy (ALT) to eradicate coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) biofilms. We studied the colonization status of the catheter every 30 days by quantitative blood cultures (QBC) drawn through all catheter lumens. Those patients with a significant culture (i.e.,100 to 1,000 CFU/mL) of a CoNS were classified as patients with a high risk of developing catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI). They were assigned to receive dap

Exploring Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Diversity from Artisanal Llama Sausages: Assessment of Technological and Safety Traits.

Llama sausage is still produced following artisanal procedures, with the autochthonous microbiota being mainly responsible for the fermentation process. In this work, the taxonomical identification and technological-safety criteria of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from two different productions of llama sausages (P: pilot and A: artisanal) were investigated. Staphylococcus (S) equorum and S. saprophyticus were the species most frequently found in P production, followed by S. succinis and S. warneri; a wider species variability was observed in A factory being S. equorum, S. ca

Species distribution and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Coagulase negative staphylococci isolated from various clinical specimens.

A study of 192 strains of Coagulase negative staphylococcus (CONS) showed that Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common species, 158 (82.29%) isolated from all clinical specimens followed by S. saprophyticus (30, 15.62%) isolated mainly from urine. Slime production was exhibited by 77 (48.7%) strains of S. epidermidis and 8 (26.6%) of S. saprophyticus and the difference in the slime producing activity was statistically significant (p< 0.005). Antibiotic susceptibility testing against 15 commonly used antibiotics showed multidrug resistance with more than 90% resistance to penicillin, mor

Bactericidal activity against coagulase-negative staphylococci is impaired in infants receiving long-term parenteral nutrition.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in predisposing infants to infection caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Total parenteral nutrition is an important means of providing essential nutrients to newborn infants. However, its use has been associated with complications, particularly infection caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci. Recent data suggest that TPN may modulate immune function; however, reports directly indicating impaired immunity against coagulase-negative staphylococci during TPN are limited. METHODS: Study 1 inv

Regulation of agr-dependent virulence genes in Staphylococcus aureus by RNAIII from coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Many of the genes coding for extracellular toxins, enzymes, and cell surface proteins in Staphylococcus aureus are regulated by a 510-nucleotide (nt) RNA molecule, RNAIII. Transcription of genes encoding secreted toxins and enzymes, including hla (alpha-toxin), saeB (enterotoxin B), tst (toxic shock syndrome toxin 1), and ssp (serine protease), is stimulated, while transcription of genes encoding cell surface proteins, like spa (protein A) and fnb (fibronectin binding proteins), is repressed. Besides being a regulator, RNAIII is also an mRNA coding for staphylococcal delta-lysin. We have ident

In vitro activities of vancomycin and teicoplanin against coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from neutropenic patients.

This study reports the in vitro activities of vancomycin and teicoplanin against 185 coagulase-negative staphylococcal strains isolated from 80 neutropenic patients who received different antibiotic treatments. All strains were susceptible to vancomycin: MICs for 50 and 90% of strains tested were 2 and 4 mg/liter, respectively. Teicoplanin was less active, and MICs displayed a wider range. For only teicoplanin was there a correlation between resistance and previous treatment. At the 4- and 32-mg/liter breakpoint levels, only 20% of the strains isolated from patients without glycopeptide treatm

Extract from Rosa spp. as a Factor Influencing the Growth Rate of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Strains.

Coagulase-negative bacteria of the Staphylococcus genus are currently frequent food contaminants. The increase in antibiotic resistance means that these microorganisms are becoming the cause of many serious infections and toxications. Their resistance to routinely used chemical compounds has led to the search for alternative methods to combat food-borne pathogens. For this purpose, plant extracts rich in phenolic compounds are increasingly used. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of extracts obtained from the pseudo-fruits and flesh of Rosa canina, Rosa rugosa and Rosa pomifera 'Ka

The Role of the Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) in Infective Endocarditis; A Narrative Review from 2000 to 2020.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are part of the microbiota of human skin and rarely linked with soft tissue infections. In recent years, CoNS species considered as one of the major nosocomial pathogens and can cause several infections such as catheter-acquired sepsis, skin infection, urinary tract infection, endophthalmitis, central nervous system shunt infection, surgical site infections, and foreign body infection. These microorganisms have a significant impact on human life and health and, as typical opportunists, cause peritonitis in individuals undergoing peritoneal dialysis. More

Different Types of Coagulase Are Associated With 28-Day Mortality in Patients With Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections.

Background:Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a leading cause of bacteremia and infective endocarditis, exploits the human coagulation system by using a wide range of specific virulence factors. However, the impact of these host-pathogen interactions on the outcome of patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) remains unclear. Methods: A total of 178 patients with S. aureus bacteremia were included and analyzed regarding bacterial factors (coa gene size, vWbp, clfA, clfB, fnbA, fnbB, fib) and clinical parameters. A stepwise multivariate Cox regression model and a Partitioning Around

Coagulase-negative staphylococci are associated to the mild inflammatory pattern of healthcare-associated meningitis: a retrospective study.

The epidemiology of healthcare-associated meningitis (HAM) is dominated by commensal bacteria from the skin, as coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). We hypothesized that the pauci-symptomatic and mild inflammatory patterns of HAM are related to the low pathogenic state of CoNS. Our aim was to describe clinical and biological features of CoNS HAM, compared to other HAM. All consecutive patients with HAM admitted in our hospital were retrospectively included from 2007 to 2014. HAM due to CoNS were compared to HAM caused by other bacteria (controls) for clinical and laboratory patterns. Seven

Safety Evaluation of the Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Microbiota of Salami: Superantigenic Toxin Production and Antimicrobial Resistance.

The risks of contracting staphylococci food poisoning by the consumption of improperly manufactured salami and the possibility of this food being reservoirs for antibiotic resistance were evaluated. Nineteen coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) strains were found in commercial and artisanal salami. The species in commercial salami were S. saprophyticus, S. sciuri, S. xylosus, and S. carnosus. Artisanal salami showed S. succinus, S. epidermidis, and S. hominis but no S. carnosus. Phylogenetic analyses grouped the strains into three major staphylococcal species groups, comprised of 4 refined c

Bacterial substitution of coagulase-negative staphylococci for streptococci on the oral mucosa after hematopoietic cell transplantation.

PURPOSE: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are frequently isolated from blood cultures of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) patients. Generally, the use of central venous catheters is recognized as a significant risk factor for CoNS infection, while the impact of CoNS infection from oral ulcerative mucositis, which occurs frequently in HCT, may be underestimated. Here, we examined the bacteria on the buccal mucosa after HCT. METHODS: Sixty-one patients were examined for bacteria on the buccal mucosa routinely once a week from 1 week before to 3 weeks after allogeneic HCT. Subject
