Experimental Cryptosporidium parvum infections in opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

Five nursing opossums (Didelphis virginiana) were each inoculated with 5 x 10(6) Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts of calf origin. Following inoculation, endogenous stages of C. parvum were observed in the ileum, cecum, and colon of these opossums. Two of three noninoculated pouch mates acquired infections during the study based on examinations of feces and tissue sections of all eight opossums. Mild diarrhea was observed in four of seven opossums harboring C. parvum, although none died as a result of the infection. Under the conditions of this study, C. parvum appeared to be only mildly pathogen

Cryptosporidium and cryptosporidiosis.

Cryptosporidium is a newly recognized human pathogen associated with severe enteritis and, perhaps, cholecystitis in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and significant, though self-limited, diarrheal illness in the immunocompetent host. As more physicians look for this pathogen, the number of reported cases of cryptosporidiosis continues to increase. Although the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis in humans is not yet known, recent studies suggest that it is a common cause of diarrhea worldwide, particularly in young children. The pathogeni

Distribution of cryptosporidia within the gastrointestinal tract of young calves.

Natural cryptosporidial infection of the gastrointestinal tract was recognised in four young calves by light microscopy and correlated with scanning and transmission electron microscopy in two of the calves. Seven to 10 sites of the small intestine were examined in each calf and cryptosporidia were most numerous in the posterior 50 per cent. None were found in the anterior 20 per cent of the small intestine, the abomasum or the colon, but they were present in the mucosa of the caecum of three calves.

[Effect of parasitic protozoa on the physiological state of the body of the confused flour beetle (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)].

Studies were conducted of diseases of Tribolium destructor and T. confusum caused by parasites of the fat body, microsporidians of Nosema whitei and coccidians of Adelina tribolii. The infection of larvae of tenebrionid beetles with microsporidians and coccidians results in substantial changes in the metabolism of insects-hosts (respiratory metabolism is disturbed and activity of tissue catalase is reduced). Physiological characteristics of uninfected larvae of T. confusum and T. destructor differ considerably. In T. destructor the disease is more acute in its character and is accompanied by m

Leading report on the molecular prevalence of emerging pathogens Hepatozoon sp. and Lankesterella sp. in the blood samples of seven wild lizard species.

Despite of having rich reptilian fauna, the wild lizards from Pakistan remained unexplored for the presence of blood borne parasites. The present study was designed to report the molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic evaluation of various blood borne pathogens (Hepatozoon sp., Schellackia spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium spp., Haemoproteus spp. and Leucocytozoon spp.) in blood samples of wild lizards (N = 84), trapped during March 2022 till June 2023 from district Karak and Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Pakistan). Seven lizard species were identified during present study. Our results reveale

Detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in sputum during screening for mycobacteria.

We report a case in which Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected during routine auramine screening of a sputum specimen for acid-fast bacilli. The patient was a 28-year-old male with acquired immune deficiency syndrome and intestinal cryptosporidiosis. Microbiology laboratory workers should be alert to the possibility that these oocysts may be present in sputum specimens from patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

A haemogregarine from the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Haemogregarina crocodilinorum Börner 1901 is redescribed from the blood of the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). Gametocytes occurred in erythrocytes and erythrocytic schizonts contained about eight merozoites (range, 6--12). Gametogony and sporogony occurred in the gut of the leech, Placobdella multilineata and intracellular, unisporocystic oocysts were found within epithelial cells of the leech's intestinal wall. Presumed sporozoites were present in the intestinal contents. Attempts to transmit the parasite via leeches failed. The haemogregarine was widely distributed in south

Cryptosporidiosis in immunodeficient Arabian foals.

Five of six immunodeficient Arabian foals that died of adenoviral infection were found to be infected with an intestinal coccidian of the genus Cryptosporidium. Various developmental stages of the organism were found in the microvillous border of the intestinal mucosa. The foals had diarrhea but it was not possible to separate the effects of the cryptosporidial infection from those of the concomitant adenoviral enteritis.

[Human cryptosporidiosis: a propos of 4 cases].

Cryptosporidiae are ubiquitous protozoan belonging to the coccidiae family which parasite many wild and domestic animals bowels. Man gets infested by ingestion oocysts. The parasite complete cycle takes place on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells microvillosities. Human cases that we described occurred among patients presenting (or not) with acquired or congenital immunity depression. Diarrhea is the main symptom. Diagnosis is based on parasitological stool examination and pathological study of intestinal biopsies. At the present time no specific treatment is known and only the immunit

Evaluation of OvaCyte for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites in ovine and bovine animals: comparison with traditional flotation techniques.

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and analytical performance of OvaCyte, an automated image-based system for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites in ruminants, against traditional flotation techniques. OvaCyte is available in two versions: OvaCyte Plus, which automates egg detection and quantification, and OvaCyte Premium, which incorporates enhanced analysis to differentiate parasite families, genera, and species within strongyles (e.g., Trichostrongylidae, Haemonchus contortus, and Nematodirus spp.). Coccidia are also classified as standard or type B, with the latter specifi

Identification of intestinal parasites in wild American mink (Neovison vison) from Biebrza and Narew national parks (Poland).

American mink (Neovison vison) is an invasive species in the sylvatic environment of Poland. Mink are exposed to different parasite infections as their preys serve as intermediate and/or paratenic hosts. The study aimed to discriminate the pattern of intestinal parasite infections in mink inhabiting Biebrza (BNP) and Narew (NNP) national parks. Gastrointestinal tract examinations revealed Coccidia, Echinostomatidae, Taenidae, and Capillariidae parasites. There was no significant difference in the parasite burden of mink, but patterns of infections varied between both localizations. Coccidia we

Coprology of a single Northern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus roumanicus): first report of Isospora rastegaievae in Poland.

Coprological analysis of a sample from one free-living hedgehog was done with the use of a direct flotation method with additional incubation of fecal material. The study revealed three types of eggs and oocysts in the feces. The most commonly diagnosed were oocysts of Isospora rastegaievae (543/3g), while oocysts of Monocystis sp. (267/3g) and eggs of Aonchotheca/Eucoleus spp. (52/3g) were seen less often. This is the first report of coccidia I. rastegaievae (Apicomplexa: Eimeriida) and acephaline gregarine Monocystis sp. (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) infection in a hedgehog in Poland.

Ileoileal intussusception associated with coccidiosis in sheep.

Postmortem examination of a 3-year-old male Iranian native sheep with a history of anorexia and severe colic, revealed an intussusception of the small intestine, 30 cm proximal to the ileocaecal junction. Scattered hyperplastic lesions were present in the jejunal and ileal mucosa especially in intussuscipien. Microscopic examination of these lesions showed severe papillary hyperplasia of the epithelium associated with developmental stages of coccidia in the epithelial cells. An unusual type of intussusception and the presence of the proliferative nodular form of coccidiosis in the intestinal w

Influence of Eimeria spp. Infection on Chicken Jejunal Microbiota and the Efficacy of Two Alternative Products Against the Infection.

Eimeria spp. are important intestinal pathogens of chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). Anticoccidial feed additives, chemicals, and ionophores have traditionally been used to control Eimeria infections in broiler production. Thus, the trend toward antibiotic-free and organic production requires new approaches to coccidiosis prevention. Two not mutually exclusive methods are the use of plant extracts with antiparasitic activity and manipulation of the intestinal microbiota by pre- and probiotics. In the present study, birds were inoculated with a combination of Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxi

Control of some internal parasites of chinchillas.

An unidentified coccidia was found in chinchillas. Treatment with sulfamethazine apparently eradicated the infection from several herds. Ostertagia females and 1 Trichostrongylus colubriformis male were also found in chinchillas, causing emaciation. A dose of thiabendazole of 100 mg./kg. of body weight was effective against the roundworms, but it was toxic. A dose of trichlorphon, 100 mg./kg. of body weight, was effective and safe. Hymenolepis infection caused emaciation and death. Treatment with doses of niclosamide, 200 mg./kg. of body weight, was successful in removing tapeworms, ending dea
