'Employ Your Mind': a pilot evaluation of a programme to help people with serious mental illness obtain and retain employment.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairments contribute to difficulty in obtaining employment for people with severe mental illnesses (SMIs). We describe a pilot evaluation of a programme, Employ Your Mind (EYM), which integrates cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) with vocational rehabilitation. METHOD: Sixty participants with SMIs enrolled in EYM, a 6-month programme that combines CRT exercises, individual project work and group reflection sessions about social interaction and cognitive functioning. Participants completed assessments of cognitive function (Audio Recorded Cognitive Screen, Wechsler Digi

Depressive symptoms and cognitive control in a mixed antisaccade task: specific effects of depressive rumination.

Growing empirical evidence suggests that cognitive and affective problems in depression may be a reflection of cognitive control impairments. However, to date, the nature of such impairments is still poorly understood and further investigation of this topic is required to advance current knowledge on the underlying vulnerability factors for depression. Using a mixed antisaccade paradigm, the present study examined if depressive symptoms in general, and more specifically rumination, are related to impairments in cognitive control functions such as inhibition and switching. The results on antisa

The intergenerational transmission of attachment during middle childhood in lesbian, gay, and heterosexual parent families through assisted reproduction: The mediating role of reflective functioning.

The present study examined the attachment patterns distribution of 60 lesbian mothers, 50 gay fathers, and 42 heterosexual parents through assisted reproduction and their 76 children, using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and the Friends and Family Interview (FFI), respectively. The study also explored the intergenerational transmission of attachment through reflective functioning (AAI-RF). All families lived in Italy and children were aged 6-12 years (Myears = 8.11, SD = 2.17; 48.68% assigned female at birth). The AAI patterns distribution was similar across family types and did not sign

Power and promise of narrative for advancing physical therapist education and practice.

This perspective article provides a justification for and an overview of the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool for educators to help physical therapist students, residents, and clinicians develop skills of reflection and reflexivity in clinical practice. The use of narratives is a pedagogical approach that provides a reflective and interpretive framework for analyzing and making sense of texts, stories, and other experiences within learning environments. This article describes reflection as a well-established method to support critical analysis of clinical experiences; to assist in uncove

Rationalization and Reflection Differentially Modulate Prior Attitudes Toward the Purity Domain.

Outside Western, predominantly secular-liberal environments, norms restricting bodily and sexual conduct are widespread. Moralization in the so-called purity domain has been treated as evidence that some putative violations are victimless. However, respondents themselves disagree: They often report that private yet indecent acts incur self-harm, or harm to one's family and the wider community-a result which we replicate in Study 1. We then distinguish two cognitive processes that could generate a link between harmfulness and immorality, and recreate them in Studies 2 and 3: Colombian and Briti

Cubical Model of Intelligence: Phenomenological and Cognitive Approach to Seven Aspects of Mind.

This paper presents the Cubic Model of Intelligence — a phenomenological and cognitive approach to understanding seven interrelated aspects of the mind: logic, emotion, intuition, memory, ethics, social context, and temporal foresight. The model is derived from observation of internal thinking processes and proposes to view these aspects not as separate functions but as facets of a unified cognitive structure, whose interactions shape human understanding and decision-making. In this study, the cube is not treated as a symbolic image but as a theoretical hypothesis about the structural organizat

Trait self-esteem and neural activities related to self-evaluation and social feedback.

Self-esteem has been associated with neural responses to self-reflection and attitude toward social feedback but in different brain regions. The distinct associations might arise from different tasks or task-related attitudes in the previous studies. The current study aimed to clarify these by investigating the association between self-esteem and neural responses to evaluation of one's own personality traits and of others' opinion about one's own personality traits. We scanned 25 college students using functional MRI during evaluation of oneself or evaluation of social feedback. Trait self-est

The role of experiential avoidance, rumination and mindfulness in eating disorders.

Anorexia nervosa has been associated with high levels of ruminative thoughts about eating, shape and weight as well as avoidance of emotion and experience. This study examined the associations between disorder-specific rumination, mindfulness, experiential avoidance and eating disorder symptoms. A sample of healthy females (n=228) completed a battery of on-line self-report measures. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that ruminative brooding on eating, weight and shape concerns was uniquely associated with eating disorder symptoms, above and beyond anxiety and depression symptoms. Psychosocial correlates of depressive rumination.

The study examined the relationship between brooding, the maladaptive sub-component of depressive rumination, an important cognitive mechanism implicated in the aetiology of depression, and a range of depressogenic psychosocial factors, including insecure attachment styles and maladaptive interpersonal behaviours. It was hypothesised that brooding (but not the more adaptive reflection component) is associated with an attachment pattern characterised by fear of rejection, and an interpersonal style characterised by submissiveness. Currently depressed (n = 29), previously depressed (n = 42) and

Pupils expand when memories are spoken.

Autobiographical memory serves both private reflection and social communication, yet little is known about how these retrieval modes differ in physiological demands. We investigated whether overt (spoken) versus covert (silent) autobiographical retrieval differentially modulates pupil activity- a sensitive index of cognitive processing. Forty-four participants recalled personal memories under overt and covert conditions, alongside overt and covert counting control tasks, while pupil size was continuously recorded. Results revealed significantly larger pupil diameters during overt retrieval com

Criterion and incremental validity of the emotion regulation questionnaire.

Although research on emotion regulation (ER) is developing, little attention has been paid to the predictive power of ER strategies beyond established constructs. The present study examined the incremental validity of the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross and John, 2003), which measures cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, over and above the Big Five personality factors. It also extended the evidence for the measure's criterion validity to yet unexamined criteria. A university student sample (N = 203) completed the ERQ, a measure of the Big Five, and relevant cognitive

Predicting changes in depressive symptoms from pregnancy to postpartum: the role of brooding rumination and negative inferential styles.

The current study examined the role of cognitive factors in the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms from pregnancy into the postpartum period. One hundred and one women were assessed for levels of rumination (brooding and reflection), negative inferential styles, and depressive symptoms in their third trimester of pregnancy and depressive symptom levels again at four and eight weeks postpartum. We found that, although none of the three cognitive variables predicted women's initial depressive reactions following childbirth (from pregnancy to one month postpartum), brooding rumina

Mental time travel and insight in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia features pervasive insight deficits, with many failing to recognize symptoms or the need for treatment, predictors of poorer outcomes. Rather than unitary, insight comprises clinical (awareness of illness and need for care) and cognitive (self-reflectiveness and the ability to question one's beliefs). This review examines whether mental time travel (MTT) - vivid recollection of past events and construction of detailed future scenarios - may underlie insight deficits in schizophrenia. We synthesize evidence up to May 2025 from meta-analyses, experimental studies, and neuroimaging/

"I have problems and I have fun": Funniness ratings of memes about psychological problems reflect how people relate them to themselves and correlate with rumination, reflection, self-liking, and self-competence.

BACKGROUND: Some internet memes relate to specific psychological problems, such as pessimism, anxiety, procrastination, depression, masking feelings, social isolation, and coping with problems. We compared participants' funniness ratings and perceived self-relatedness of these memes, moderated by humor styles. Moreover, we investigated the relationships between ratings of the funniness and relatedness of memes and cognitive processes of rumination and reflection and participants' self-liking and self-competence, controlling for humor styles. Neural mechanisms of rumination subtypes in adolescent major depressive disorder based on large-scale brain network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is rising. Rumination, a core cognitive factor in its onset and maintenance, divides into adaptive reflective and maladaptive brooding subtypes. Brooding exacerbates symptoms and predicts future episodes, suggesting distinct neural bases. Given adolescents' critical brain development, exploring brain network-rumination subtype links deepens MDD neural understanding and informs subtype-specific interventions. This study uses resting-state EEG to investigate large-scale network characteristics in adolescent MDD and their s

Dynamic assessment of self-regulated learning in preschool.

The assessment of self-regulated learning is a relevant research topic in early childhood development. However, there are few ecologic measures to assess self-regulated learning in preschool as a dynamic and multidimensional process. This study aims to fill this gap by presenting the development and validation of the Dynamic Assessment of Self-regulated learning in Preschool (DASP) method. A dynamic assessment of the construct may constitute an important contribution as it enables the acquisition of cross observational, verbal, and performance data. The DASP method was developed within a theor

Assessment of grief-related rumination: validation of the German version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Bereavement can result in severe mental health problems, including persistent, severe and disabling grief symptoms, termed complicated grief. Grief rumination (i.e., repetitive thought about the causes and consequences of the loss) is a malleable cognitive risk-factor in adjustment to bereavement. The Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) was recently developed to assess grief rumination. The present study aimed to develop and validate a German version of the UGRS. METHODS: An online survey including measures of demographic and loss-related variables, grief rumination (UGRS), depr
