Therapeutic hypothermia and temperature management2025eng
The critical care unit at the University Hospital of Wales is a 38-bedded tertiary center. In 2023, the unit admitted 1251 unscheduled patients, of which 131 were out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OOHCA) patients. The unit also participated in the Targeted Temperature Management 2 study and adopted the findings shortly after its publication in 2021. This gave us a unique exposure into the pitfalls associated with changing surface cooling protocols. The aim of this quality and safety initiative was to explore the causes of failure to comply with normothermic temperature targets in the OOHCA popul

As a class of plasticizers widely used in consumer products, some phthalate esters (PAEs) have been restricted due to their adverse health effects and ubiquitous presence, leading to the introduction of alternative non-phthalates plasticizers (NPPs) to the market. However, few studies focus on the influence of environmental parameters on the presence of these plasticizers and the potential human health risks for people living in poorly ventilated indoor spaces in cold regions. We investigated the trends of PAEs and NPPs in air in a typical indoor residence in northern China for over one year.

Multiple mRNA isoforms are often generated during processing such as alternative splicing of precursor mRNAs (pre-mRNA), resulting in a diversity of generated proteins. Alternative splicing is an essential mechanism for the functional complexity of eukaryotes. Temperature, which is involved in all life activities at various levels, is one of regulatory factors for controlling patterns of alternative splicing. Temperature-dependent alternative splicing is associated with various phenotypes such as flowering and circadian clock in plants and sex determination in poikilothermic animals. In some s

OBJECTIVE: To develop a sensitive, specific, simple, cost-effective and reproducible platform for the non-invasive prenatal detection of paternally inherited alleles for β-thalassaemia. The development of such an assay is of major significance in order to replace currently-applied invasive methods containing inherent fetal loss risks.
METHODS: We present a fast Temperature-Gradient Co-amplification at Lower Denaturation Temperature Polymerase Chain Reaction (fast TG COLD PCR) methodology for the detection of the paternally-inherited fetal alleles in maternal plasma. Two single-nucleotide poly

This study investigated the effects of three low-temperature conditioning (LTC) treatments on the storage quality and postharvest physiology of "Dajixin" wampee (Clausena lansium) fruit during cold storage at 3 °C for 16 days. Treatments included LTC 1 (12 °C, 4 d), LTC 2 (8 °C, 4 d), and LTC 3 (stepwise 12 °C for 2 d then 8 °C for 2 d). Compared with direct cold storage (control), LTC 2 reduced the browning index by 22.9% (from 3.80 to 2.93, P < .05), suppressed weight loss (7.17% vs. 7.90%, P < .05), and maintained higher total soluble solids (19.58% vs. 17.11%, P < .05). LTC 2 inhibited mal

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis has found application in a limited number of genetic diseases due to the difficulty in detecting a few copies of fetal mutated sequences in the presence of a large excess of wild-type maternal alleles, even in the case of single-base mutations.
METHODS: We developed conditions for the enrichment of fetal mutated alleles in maternal plasma based on CO-amplification at lower denaturation temperature-PCR (COLD-PCR). In particular, we applied a full COLD-PCR protocol to the identification of a p.A87_G92del mutation in the TWIST1 gene causing craniosynos

Millions of vaccine doses are wasted each year due to a lapse in recommended storage conditions. Maintaining the cold chain for vaccines is both expensive and difficult, especially in developing countries. The present study investigated the safety and immunogenicity of a single dose of the conjugated meningococcal Group C vaccine, Menjugate, stored for 6 months at room temperature (25+/-2 degrees C, N=250) or at 2-8 degrees C (N=250) when administered to 12-23 months toddlers. In the two respective groups, 87 and 88% of toddlers reached bactericidal antibodies titers of at least 1:8. The immun

Arcing is a ubiquitous phenomenon and a crucial issue in high-voltage applied systems, especially low-temperature plasma (LTP) engineering. Although arcing in LTPs has attracted interest due to the severe damage it can cause, its underlying mechanism has yet to be fully understood. To elucidate the arcing mechanism, this study investigated various signals conventionally used to analyze arcing such as light emission, arcing current and voltage, and background plasma potential. As a result, we found that light emission occurs as early as 0.56 μs before arcing current initiation, which is a signi

Although interest in assessing the impacts of hot temperature and mortality in Hong Kong has increased, less evidence on the effect of cold temperature on mortality is available. We examined both the effects of heat and cold temperatures on daily mortality in Hong Kong for the last decade (2002-2011). A quasi-Poisson model combined with a distributed lag non-linear model was used to assess the non-linear and delayed effects of temperatures on cause-specific and age-specific mortality. Non-linear effects of temperature on mortality were identified. The relative risk of non-accidental mortality

OBJECTIVE: Considering the adverse effects of exercise-induced cortisol secretion on health in athletes, it is important to determine the environmental and individual factors that contribute to the variations in exercise-induced cortisol secretion. In this study, the effects of cold environment exposure and cold acclimatization on exercise-induced salivary cortisol responses were investigated.
METHODS: Short track skaters (n = 11), who usually practice under cold conditions, and inline skaters (n = 11), who usually practice under room temperature conditions, participated in a randomized cross

The Prism method for temperature based time since death estimation has been demonstrated as a proof of principle in 2021. Now it was validated experimentally. 10 cooling dummies (physical weights from 5.9 kg to 26.9 kg) were fabricated and fitted with temperature probes. A total of 127 dummy cooling experiments were conducted (total cooling time 2082 h, average cooling time 24.6 h) for both regular and elevated starting temperatures, covering ambient temperatures between - 14.0 °C and + 24.0 °C and for different cooling conditions. Cooling data was recorded, then cropped, smoothed, fed into th

BACKGROUND: A substantial subset of patients suffering from cold urticaria (ColdU) have atypical disease presentations and develop cold-induced wheals and/or angioedema in a real-world setting but not in response to standard cold stimulation tests. How to diagnose atypical ColdU is largely unclear, and little is known about the clinical features and treatment responses.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe subtypes of atypical ColdU and provide recommendations for the diagnostic workup.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search on subtypes of atypical ColdU and publi

Cold exposure increases feeding, thermogenesis, and energy expenditure to maintain body temperature and energy balance, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify cold-responsive neurons in the dorsal posterior periventricular hypothalamus that coordinate these adaptations. Activation of GABAergic or cold-activated neurons increased food intake, body temperature, and brown adipose tissue thermogenesis, whereas their inhibition attenuated cold-induced hyperphagia and thermogenesis. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing identified Lef1 as a marker of cold-activated neurons in

Limited evidence exists regarding the association between ambient temperature and blood pressure (BP) level of pregnant women. To investigate the associations of ambient temperature with maternal BP and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), we studied 105,063 participants in 38 centers of 17 provinces from November 2017 to December 2021. BP was measured with standardized automated digital sphygmomanometers. Ambient temperature was classified into five classes as very hot, moderate hot, mild, moderate cold, and very cold. Generalized linear mixed models were used to investigate the ambient

The effects of cooling rate, Ti content, and casting temperature on titanium compounds for high titanium steel were investigated. In-situ observation of high titanium steel during remelting and solidification was carried out by using a High Temperature Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope (HTCSLM), and the observed results were in good agreement with the thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. The observation and calculation results both show that the inclusions in high titanium steel first precipitate in the form of TiN, followed by TiC precipitates as temperature decreases, eventually forming

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) is thought to result from osmotic and thermal events of air conditioning during exercise at high ventilation rates. The purpose of this study was to evaluate lung function after exercise and eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation (EVH) while breathing both room-temperature and cold-temperature dry bottled air.
METHODS: Twenty-two subjects were identified as EIB probable by a fall of >or=7% in forced expiratory volume in the first second of exhalation (FEV1) using a 6-min room-temperature EVH challenge (RTEVH; 22.0 degrees C). Subjects then

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the differences between males and females in autonomic functions and cognitive performance during cold-air exposure and cold-water partial-immersion compared to a room temperature-air environment. Although several studies have investigated the effects of cold-air or cold-water exposures on autonomic function and cognitive performance, biological sex differences are often under-researched.
METHODS: Twenty-two males and nineteen females participated in the current study. Subjects completed a battery of cognitive tasks based upon those used within the Defens

Temperature monitoring is essential for assessing neonates and providing appropriate neonatal thermal care. Thermoneutrality is defined as the environmental temperature range within which the oxygen and metabolic consumptions are minimum to maintain normal body temperature. When neonates are in an environment below thermoneutral temperature, they respond by vasoconstriction to minimise heat losses, followed by a rise in metabolic rate to increase heat production. This condition, physiologically termed cold stress, usually occurs before hypothermia. In addition to standard axillary or rectal te
