Contribution to the knowledge of genus Nalassus Mulsant, 1856 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) from the Eastern Caucasus, Russia.

A new species of darkling beetle of the tribe Helopini is described from the Eastern Caucasus (Russia): Nalassus magomedrasuli Nabozhenko sp. n. It was originally described as the Dagestan population of N. kalashiani Nabozhenko, 2001 based on the similar structure of the male aedeagus. The new species is similar to N. kalashiani in that it differs in the structure of the eyes, male antennae, the shape of the pronotum, the scutellar shield, the male abdomen and habitats. Nalassus magomedrasuli occurs in xerophytic limestone mountain phryganoid steppes in Dagestan, whereas N. kalashiani is distr

Morphology of the pupae of Physonota humilis Boheman and Physonota stigmatilis Boheman (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae: Ischyrosonychini).

Pupal morphology has been described for 11 species in six genera of the Neotropical tortoise beetle tribe, Ischyrosonychini Chapuis, 1875. This life stage may offer valuable phylogenetic information but more pupae need to be documented. The pupae of Physonota humilis Boheman, 1856 and P. stigmatilis Boheman, 1854 are described and illustrated for the first time. The pupa of P. humilis does not exhibit lateral scoli on the abdominal segments. Additionally, the body surfaces of P. humilis and P. stigmatilis are somewhat tuberculate, different from other described Physonota Boheman, 1854 pupae. A

Spinosad and Mixtures of an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Pyrethrins for Control of Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Field Peas.

The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L., is an important pest of field peas and faba beans in most temperate regions. As no information is currently available on efficacy of biopesticides for S. lineatus control, laboratory bioassays were performed to evaluate the impact of biopesticides (spinosad, Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, pyrethrins, B. bassiana GHA + pyrethrins, and B. bassiana GHA + azadirachtin) against adults of this pest. The concentrations used in this bioassay were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 times the lowest labeled application rate of each product. Results were further verified in c

Functional morphology of the mouthparts of lady beetle Coccinella transversoguttata (Coccinellidae, Coleoptera), with reference to their feeding mechanism.

The lady beetle Coccinella transversoguttata is an important biocontrol agent of aphids. As the main the feeding apparatus, mouthparts play essential roles in feeding process, and the morphological variation of mouthparts is correlated with variation in food source and feeding behavior. To better understand the feeding behavior of C. transversoguttata, we studied the functional morphology of mouthparts, with special attention to the fine morphology of each part of mouthpart and various kinds of sensilla. The mouthpart of C. transversoguttata is typical mandibulate type that composed of labrum,

Dispersion and Optimization of Sequential Sampling Plans for Coffee Berry Borer (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Infestations in Hawaii.

Coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a serious pest of coffee in most coffee-growing areas of the world. This beetle was first detected in Big Island of Hawaii in 2010 and has since spread to other islands. Being an invasive pest that causes serious economic damage, efforts are in progress in Hawaii to develop an integrated approach to manage this pest. In this study, we sampled commercial coffee orchards from representative coffee-growing regions in the Big Island, Hawaii, to understand dispersion of the pest in the field and develop a reliable sampl

Habitat preferences of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) species in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota.

Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are a major component of terrestrial invertebrate communities and have been used as bioindicators of habitat change and disturbance. The Black Hills of South Dakota is a small area with a high biodiversity, but the ground beetles of this region are little studied. The habitat preferences of ground beetles in the Black Hills are unknown, and baseline data must be collected if these beetles are to be used in the future as bioindicators. Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were collected from pitfall traps at two sites in each of five kinds of habitats (g

Impact of planting date on sunflower beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) infestation, damage, and parasitism in cultivated sunflower.

The sunflower beetle, Zygogramma exclamationis (F.), is the major defoliating pest of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Planting date was evaluated as a potential management tool in a variety of production regions throughout North Dakota from 1997 to 1999, for its impact on sunflower beetle population density of both adults and larvae, defoliation caused by both feeding stages, seed yield, oil content, and larval parasitism in cultivated sunflower. Results from this 3-yr study revealed that sunflower beetle adult and larval populations decreased as planting date was delayed. Delayed planting a

Search for Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) behaviorally active compounds in Aspergillus flavus (Eurotiales: Aspergillaceae)-infected grain.

Application of insecticides for pest control must be minimized due to well-known risks to human health. Application of environmentally friendly means is the best option. For stored product pests' control, new means are needed alongside a deep understanding of the ecology and behavior of the pests. The present study investigated whether the odor released from wheat grain infected by mold fungus Aspergillus flavus (Eurotiales: Aspergillaceae) influences the behavior of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)), a stored product pest of economic importance with worldwi

Emergency Control Strategies for Hylurgops longipillus R. (Coleoptera, Scolytinae) Outbreaks: From Chemical Communication to Integrated Management.

Under climate warming, bark beetle outbreaks increasingly threaten forest health. Hylurgops longipillus, a native bark beetle in Northeast China, causes patchy mortality in Pinus koraiensis plantations. We developed an integrated emergency control system based on host selection chemical ecology. Damage characterization revealed that adults concentrated on trees with 10-50% crown needle yellowing, and infestations expanded as discrete patches radiating from multiple epicenters. Electrophysiological and behavioral assays of host volatiles and some of their isomers yielded a highly effective attr

Optimizing semiochemical trap deployment for monitoring the tree-of-heaven root weevil, Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).

The tree-of-heaven root weevil, Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a destructive borer pest of Ailanthus altissima in China. Bottle traps baited with a vinegar-ethanol-apple (VEA) mixture have proven effective for capturing adults, but appropriate lure replacement intervals, trap spacing, and trap height for field monitoring remain to be determined. To address this, we conducted field experiments to evaluate how lure age, release distance, and deployment height influence trap efficiency. Our results revealed that VEA‑baited traps caught significantly

Cultural practices affect sap beetle (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) populations in matted row and plasticulture production of strawberries.

Strawberry sap beetles, Stelidota geminata (Say), are a pest problem in strawberry production in the northeast United States. Both adults and larvae reduce the quality and yield as the result of feeding directly on ripe, overripe, and decaying berries. This study (i) examined the seasonal activity and feeding injury of sap beetle populations in the matted row and plasticulture production systems, (ii) compared the yield and fruit quality associated with the sap beetle feeding in both production systems, and (iii) evaluated the effects of mulching and the timing of renovation in the matted row

Boron compounds are effective on Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae): Reduced lipogenesis and induced body weight loss.

In the current study, we investigated the insecticidal efficacy of two borates, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (Etidot-67) and calcium metaborate (CMB) via surface application or diet delivery on the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst, 1797) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The application method did not change the boron-related mortality, but CMB was more effective than Etidot-67. At the highest dose, it took around 13 days to reach the highest mortality (≥98.1%) for CMB, while it was 19 days for Etidot-67 (≥95.8%). Both boron compounds led to a significant reduction in triglyceride

Evaluating sampling techniques for quantifying Asiatic garden beetle (Maladera formosae) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) infestations in commercial mint.

The Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae Brenske (AGB), has become a significant pest of commercial mint fields in northern Indiana. Larval feeding on mint roots can cause stunted growth and plant death when densities are high. Sampling approaches that provide reliable estimates of larval densities in mint have not been established, leaving farmers without the knowledge necessary to implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated strategies for estimating AGB larval densities and plant performance in commercial mint systems. We used 2 samp

Aggregation Pheromone of the Bearded Weevil, Rhinostomus barbirostris (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): Identification, Synthesis, Absolute Configuration and Bioactivity.

The bearded weevil, Rhinostomus barbirostris (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Dryophthorinae), attacks coconut trees, oil palms and other species of Arecaceae. Besides direct damage, R. barbirostris may be a vector of diseases in coconut and oil palms, such as stem bleeding (resinosis) and red ring disease. Currently, the only method to control this weevil is by visual observation of damage and removal of infected plants. Semiochemical-based trapping could improve the effectiveness of monitoring and management of R. barbirostris. In comparisons of volatiles released by R. barbirostris males and fem

Xylosandrus germanus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) Occurrence, Fungal Associations, and Management Trials in New York Apple Orchards.

Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) has caused increasing damage in high-density New York apple orchards since 2013, resulting in tree decline and death. We documented their occurrence and timing in > 50 orchards using ethanol-baited traps from 2014 to 2016. First captures ranged from 48 to 83 degree days (base 10 °C) from 1 January. Captures were numerically higher at the orchard-woods interface than within the orchard interior, but differences were not significant in locations with lower populations. Control using insecticide trunk sprays was tested in potted, waterlogged apple trees placed in

Bacterial community and nitrogen fixation in the red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae).

The red turpentine beetle, Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), colonizes all pines species within its native range throughout North and Central America. Recently, this species was accidentally introduced to China, where it has caused severe damage in pine forests. It belongs to a group of beetles that spend most of their lives between the tree bark and sapwood, where it feeds on phloem: a poor substrate with very low nutritional value of nitrogen and toxic properties due to its high content of secondary defensive compounds. The aim of this study was to characte
