INTRODUCTION: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb are common. Complete rupture can be a debilitating injury, resulting in decreased grip and pinch strength.
PURPOSE: The present study evaluated prospectively the functional results of 27 patients who had open repair of the UCL of the thumb using microanchors either acutely or delayed (up to 9 weeks postinjury).
METHODS: Through a standard S-shaped incision over the dorsoulnar aspect of the thumb, one or two 1.5-or 1.3-mm microanchors are fixed to the base of the proximal phalanx in the

CASE DESCRIPTION: 4 horses with enthesopathy and desmitis of the medial collateral ligament of the cubital joint were examined.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: All 4 horses had a history of acute, severe, unilateral forelimb lameness and had signs of pain during manipulation of the affected upper forelimb; 2 also had swelling in the axillary region. There was no improvement in lameness after diagnostic local analgesia below the carpal region, and 1 of 4 horses had mild improvement after cubital joint analgesia. Radiography revealed enthesophyte formation on the radial tuberosity and linear mineralization

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the most commonly injured ligament of the knee. There is a spectrum of injury severity, and injuries may be acute or chronic. The MCL is also frequently injured in conjunction with other knee structures. Clinical evaluation of the knee is important to assess the degree of surgical acuity, but magnetic resonance imaging can provide details about the injury that may not be obvious clinically. In addition to injury, MCL bursitis can occur and may be treated with needle aspiration and corticosteroid injection. This review article covers the anatomy and biome

OBJECTIVE: To discuss a new technique about reconstruction of medial collateral ligament (MCL) with double bundle allograft and to evaluate the short-term clinical efficacy.
METHODS: All 53 patients who suffered from valgus instability of the knee were selected. All cases were diagnosed of MCL injury because the medial gap of the knee widened more than 5 mm compared with collateral knee by the stress X-ray, MRI displayed discontinuity of MCL and valgus stress test was positive. All patients were accepted arthroscopic evaluation through inferomedial and inferolateral arthroscopy portal incisio

Over 10 years in our unit, 127 patients underwent surgical repair of an acute thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) rupture for clinically unstable injuries or displaced avulsion fractures. Ultrasound was used when clinical diagnosis was uncertain. The male/female ratio was 3:2, with a mean age of 40 years (range: 12-81 years). Most of them (> or =66%) were hyper-extension/abduction injuries. The most common cause was a fall (49%), followed by sports injuries; skiing accounted for only 2.4%. Ultrasound was 92% sensitive for UCL ruptures (positive predictive value (PPV) 99%). Over 99% of patien

BACKGROUND: The Stener lesion of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint of the thumb is characterized by an interposition of the adductor aponeurosis between a distally avulsed ligament and its insertion into the base of the proximal phalanx. Stener-like lesions of the MP joint of the finger have been previously reported in only a few cases.
METHODS: The authors experienced 38 cases of collateral ligament injuries of the MP joint of the finger. The two most frequently affected sites were the radial side of the little finger (21 cases) and the radial side of the ri

Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries are common and are seen most frequently in baseball pitchers. Appropriate recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation are necessary to ensure the best chance for return to preinjury levels of participation. Participation in competitive sports may be disrupted for 6 months to 1 year when treated optimally. Abstinence from play may be prolonged when treatment is delayed or if conservative treatment fails; this delay carries significant consequences to the professional, collegiate, and high school athlete. The orthopedic literature is replete with re

Macrodactyly is a rare congenital anomaly of the hand that is difficult to treat. We describe a new technique consisting of hemidigital, longitudinal, and transverse en bloc resection with collateral ligament transplantation to the proximal interphalangeal joint that we used in a case of macrodactyly. Four years after the procedure the digit's appearance was largely improved with preservation of complete motion at the proximal interphalangeal joint. Transplantation of the collateral ligament ensured a stable joint. Fingertip sensibility was maintained.

We present a case in which an open wound involving the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger was treated by ligament reconstruction using a strip of Dacron material, nerve grafting and coverage by a posterior interosseous artery pedicled flap. At a long term follow-up of 4 years, the joint was stable and had a full range of movement.

Complete thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries usually require primary repair. The ulnar collateral ligament is often torn from its insertion site and reattachment is difficult. Seven patients underwent repair with the Mitek bone anchor (Mitek Surgical Products, Norwood, MA) for complete ulnar collateral ligament disruptions. A Stener lesion was found in four patients. Follow-up examination was at approximately 1 year. All patients regained a stable metacarpophalangeal joint to valgus stress. X-ray films demonstrated accurate placement of the bone anchor with protraction of the metall

We present a simple preoperative clinical test, the collateral ligament extension-flexion test (CLEFT). In patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, with a preoperative valgus or varus deformity, this test establishes which knees have balanced collateral ligaments. It predicts which knees will not require soft tissue adjustment during the course of their surgery despite, in some cases, large deformities. The mechanism of the test is based on the observation that, in certain patients, a deformity present in extension is seen to correct in flexion. The sensitivity of this observation was chec

This investigation studied the peak torque and total work hamstring/quadriceps (HQ) ratios of 24 lateral collateral ligament (LCL) insufficient knees, and clarified the possible associations between different HQ ratios and the long-term outcomes of patients. Peak torque values were recorded at low (60 degrees/sec) and high (180 degrees/sec) speed of isokinetic movement, and the maximal isometric extension and flexion outputs were measured at the knee angle of 60 degrees from straight. Three standardized knee scoring scales were used to determine the subjective, functional, clinical, and radiol

BACKGROUND: Superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) injury is common, but there are no in vivo studies describing the biomechanical efficacy of anatomic repair with internal bracing for grade 3 injuries.
METHODS: We used a porcine model to evaluate the efficacy of internal bracing using an artificial ligament for the early repair of acute, grade 3 sMCL injuries. Sixteen male castrated pigs were randomly assigned to a repair group: (1) anatomic repair using two suture anchors (Group R; n = 9) or (2) anatomic repair with internal bracing augmentation (Group IB; n = 7). The left knees were

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle accidents constitute the most prevalent high-energy mechanisms for knee dislocation, resulting in multiligament knee injuries (MLKIs). When concomitant posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and posteromedial corner injury becomes chronic after failed conservative treatment, surgical intervention is indicated to restore the native knee biomechanics.
INDICATIONS: Double-bundle PCL reconstruction is indicated for chronic instability, increased posterior tibial translation, decreased tibial slope, and failure of conservative treatment measures. posteromedial corner reconstru

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries are commonly encountered injuries in orthopedic practice. Simultaneously, patients are utilizing online resources to better understand diagnoses and treatment options. As such, understanding public interest and the accessibility of educational materials can provide insight into information-seeking behaviors and gaps in health literacy. This study used Google Trends (Google Limited Liability Corporation (LLC), Mountain View, CA) data to evaluate temporal patterns in public interest regarding ACL and MCL

Deep medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury leads to meniscal lift-off and extrusion of the medial meniscus, resulting in instability and increased medial compartment pressures with subsequent cartilage damage. Repair of the deep MCL meniscotibial ligament in concert with superficial MCL repair or reconstruction is intended to restore the native anatomy , stability, and function of the medial meniscus. We present an arthroscopically assisted technique using standard arthroscopy portals and a medial open approach.

We present a novel and simple method for single hamstring allograft MCL and PMC reconstruction, which can improve both joint valgus and external rotational stability and maximize utilization of allograft. All patients received arthroscopic evaluation through inferomedial and inferolateral knee incisions to ascertain whether there were intra-articular injuries. An 8-cm-length longitudinal incision was made from 1 cm above adductor tubercle to 5-cm proximal medial tibia joint line. The anterior tibia insertion was defined as 15 mm lateral from the medial tibia edge and 45 mm below the medial tib
