Giant Leaking Colloid Cyst Presenting with Aseptic Meningitis: Review of the Literature and Report of a Case.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign third ventricle lesions that need to be diagnosed correctly because of their association with sudden death. Chemical or aseptic meningitis is a rare presentation of a colloid cyst. METHODS: We present a case of a 69-year-old man with fever, alteration of mental status, and meningismus. Microbiological examination of the cerebrospinal fluid revealed aseptic meningitis. Brain imaging revealed a third ventricular colloid cyst with hydrocephalus. RESULTS: The tumor was resected via endoscopic intervention. There were no persistent operative complications rela

Anterograde and retrograde amnesia in a person with bilateral fornix lesions following removal of a colloid cyst.

AD, a 45-year-old man, presented with a severe and global anterograde amnesia following surgery for removal of a colloid cyst. Structural neuroimaging confirmed bilateral lesions to the fornix and a small lesion in the basal forebrain. Testing for remote episodic memory of autobiographical events, and for remote semantic memory of personal and public events, and of famous people, revealed that AD had a severe retrograde amnesia for autobiographical episodes that covered his entire lifetime, and a time-limited retrograde amnesia for semantic memory. Because the fornix and basal forebrain lesion

Third ventricular choroid plexus arteriovenous malformation simulating a colloid cyst. Case report.

A case of a cystic encapsulated arteriovenous malformation arising from the tela choroidea of the third ventricle is reported. Although the appearance of this lesion on computerized tomography scan suggested a colloid cyst by its location, it was atypical because of the non-homogeneity both before and after contrast infusion. The increased density on the unenhanced scan was due to hemosiderin pigment in the capsule wall caused by old hemorrhage. The diagnosis in this case was made by histological examination.

Endoscopic versus Open Microsurgical Excision of Colloid Cysts: A Comparative Analysis and State-of-the-Art Review of Neurosurgical Techniques.

BACKGROUND: The surgical approaches of colloid cysts commonly include endoscopy or open microsurgery. Each approach carries its own challenges, feasibility, and complications. The aim of the current study is to compare endoscopic versus open microsurgical excision of third ventricular colloid cysts. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare the surgical outcomes of endoscopic versus open microsurgical (transcortical-transventricular and transcallosal approaches) excision of colloid cyst of the third ventricle at a tertiary-care medical institute. Management outcome of the transcallosal, transforaminal approach to colloid cysts of the anterior third ventricle: an analysis of 78 cases.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are not common brain lesions and account for 0.2-2.0% of all brain lesions. Transcallosal, transforaminal approach is a safe route and the most direct path to excise third ventricular colloid cyst, without dependence on hydrocephalus. AIM: To assess the surgical outcome of patients with colloid cysts of the anterior third ventricle treated by the transcallosal, transforaminal approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight patients operated by the above approach over a period of 20 years were analyzed. A pre- and postoperative neurological assessment was done in all t

Pre-coronal, paramedian minicraniotomy: a minimal access approach for microsurgical, transcallosal, transforaminal removal of colloid cysts of the third ventricle.

OBJECTIVE: Microsurgical excision of colloid cysts of the third ventricle is accomplished along the transcallosal or the transfrontal routes. In the transcallosal approach, venous tributaries of the superior sagittal sinus can often act as an impediment to entry into the interhemispheric fissure for accessing the corpus callosum. We propose a paramedian minicraniotomy anterior to the coronal suture for removing colloid cysts via the transcallosal approach as veins are relatively rare in this area. METHODS: A triangular minicraniotomy was designed with each side measuring 3 cm based on the mid

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle show consistent expression of PAX8 but lack other features of thyroid, müllerian or intestinal differentiation.

Colloid cyst of the 3rd ventricle (CC) is an unusual cystic lesion of uncertain histogenesis, occurring exclusively in the 3rd ventricle close to the foramen Monro. In the past, its pathogenic relationship to neurenteric cyst (NEC) of central nervous system or Rathke cleft cyst (RCC) has been suggested. Thus, we evaluated expression of selected tissue-specific transcription factors and other proteins to assess its putative origin. Tissue samples of 15 CCs (8 females and 7 males, mean age 46.7 years), 7 RCCs (7 females, mean age 45.6 years), 8 neurenteric cysts (5 females and 2 males, mean age

Long-term follow-up of memory impairment after third ventricle colloid cyst surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Colloid cysts are rare benign but potentially lethal intracranial tumors. Treatment is surgical with open microsurgery (OS) or endoscopic surgery (ES). Postoperative memory disturbance due to fornix injury is a dreaded complication. Memory problems may severely affect life quality. RESEARCH QUESTION: To investigate the long-term memory function after colloid cyst-surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients (mean age 45 years) previously operated with OS (n = 15) or ES (n = 7) underwent objective memory testing, clinical interviews including self-estimated Quality of Lif

Intraventricular sizeable colloid cyst with atypical radiological features: A case report and evidence-based review.

Colloid cysts are benign intracranial lesions, typically located in the anterior portion of the third ventricle near the interventricular foramina of Monro. The cysts usually consist of an epithelial lining filled with viscous gelatinous material of various components. Colloid cysts are generally asymptomatic, but once symptomatic, they can present in a variety of ways, including headaches, vomiting, visual and memory problems, and vertigo. Colloid cysts present classically on imaging as a well-delineated hyperattenuating lesion on unenhanced radiological modalities. Herein, we report a case o

Agenesis of the corpus callosum and colloid cyst of the third ventricle: magnetic resonance imaging of an unusual association.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is usually associated with brain malformations or with anomalies outside the central nervous system. A colloid cyst of the third ventricle may give rise to hydrocephalus and even sudden death. The authors report the case of a 23-year-old man in whom both these uncommon conditions coexisted. The findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are described. The colloid cyst was completely excised through a frontal craniotomy and the patient made a smooth recovery.

Tailored Callosotomy in Third Ventricle Colloid Cyst Resection via Anterior Interhemispheric Transcallosal Approach.

BACKGROUND: The colloid cyst represents a relatively uncommon intracranial lesion. It garners significant attention from neurosurgeons due to its benign nature, deep-seated location, and promising prognosis when identified early and surgically removed. A variety of surgical methods are used to treat these cysts, each with their strengths and weaknesses. The aim of this study is to introduce and assess a precise microsurgical technique for managing colloid cysts using the anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach. METHODS: The research involved a retrospective analysis of 14 cases betwe

Trascallosal bilateral transforaminal resection of a solid partially calcified colloid cyst: 2D operative video.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign lesions of the roof of the third ventricle, often diagnosed incidentally; sometimes they can cause hydrocephalus due to obstruction of the foramina of Monroe. Symptomatic cysts could be resected either microsurgically (transcallosal or transcortical) or endoscopically. Although both strategies are effective and have advantages and disadvantages, there is no consensus on the choice of the optimal approach. Transcallosal resection, although more invasive than endoscopy, allows adequate bimanual manipulation of the cyst and is associated with high rates of com

Postexercise Death Due to Hemorrhagic Colloid Cyst of Third Ventricle: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, slow-growing lesions of neuroepithelial origin. Although histopathologically benign, third ventricular colloid cysts are a well-known cause of sudden, unexpected coma and death. Several theories have been proposed to describe the rare, sudden onset of severe symptomatology and rapid clinical decline due to colloid cysts. Moreover, there is currently no clear consensus regarding the most suitable neurosurgical technique or the most effective approach for resection, nor do guidelines or standardized clinical indications exist to recommen

Solitary Metastasis of Renal Cell Carcinoma to the Third Ventricle Mimicking a Colloid Cyst: Case Report.

Colloid cysts are the most common third ventricle lesions and metastasis to this area is rare. We presented a case of solitary metastasis from a renal cell carcinoma to the third ventricle choroid plexus mimicking a colloid cyst. A 53-year-old man, who had a history of renal cell carcinoma 12 years ago, was operated for single third ventricle lesion and hydrocephalus via a transcallosal approach. Total removal could not be performed due to intraoperative massive bleeding. Histological examination revealed a metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The patient died on the postoperative 13th day because

Colloid cyst of the third cerebral ventricle with an embryological remnant consistent with paraphysis cerebri in an adult human.

The histogenesis of colloid cysts of the third ventricle remains unsettled. Initial theories favored a neuroepithelial (paraphysis, ependyma, choroid plexus) origin and some investigators based on morphologic analysis have offered an alternative endodermal source. We report a case of colloid cyst of the third ventricle arising in association with a remnant which we believe corresponds to the paraphysis cerebri in man.

Terson's syndrome after endoscopic colloid cyst removal: case report and a review of reported complications.

The authors report on a patient with Terson's syndrome after endoscopic colloid cyst resection of the third ventricle. This never reported complication in neuroendoscopy is explained by an increased intracranial pressure due to rinsing. Increased rinsing was needed to prevent the ventricles from collapsing. A free outflow channel and rinsing pace should always be matters of concern during neuroendoscopic procedures. Complications in neuroendoscopic colloid cyst removal are reviewed from the literature.
