Removable partial denture in special clinical conditions.

Controversies concerning the prosthetic treatment through removable or fixed dentures until the age of 18 existed and continue to exist due to the structural instability of the stomatognathic system. In this communication we present a special experience, acquired about the treatment of some clinical situations in which the removable partial denture has been found appropriate with respect to certain features as bone substance loss as a consequence of traumatisms or tumor extirpations, oligodontia, cleft lip and palate. The clinical situations that will be presented refer to a group of 29 patien

The impact of dental caries and local-area deprivation on 5-year-olds' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).

Objective: To explore the impact of area-level deprivation on 5-year-olds' (school year 1) oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Wales. Basic research design: During the 2022/23 academic year, a sample of 5-year-old children in state-maintained schools in Wales were selected to undergo a clinical examination. A random stratified sample of 15,625 children were invited to participate. The British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry diagnostic criteria was used to calculate d3mft (decayed, missing, and filled teeth) and PUFA (pulpal involvement, ulceration, fistula, and abs

Identifying people requiring special care dentistry: A scoping review.

AIMS: This scoping review aimed to document tools designed to identify persons requiring special care dentistry (SCD) and to provide a better understanding of the factors that justify adaptation in the provision of care. METHODS: A scoping review methodology was applied. An electronic search was performed in April 2021 using Pubmed and Embase. Additional tools were sought using hand searches and informal professional networking. RESULTS: Ten tools were identified that either predict the complexity of dental management or that retrospectively judge the complexity of care, of which two are as

Designing clinically useful systems: examples from medicine and dentistry.

Despite promising results in medical informatics research and the development of a large number of different systems, few systems get beyond a prototype state and are really used in practice. Among other factors, the lack of explicit user focus is one main reason. The research projects presented in this paper follow a user-centered system development approach based on extensive work analyses in interdisciplinary working groups, taking into account human cognitive performance. Different medical and health-care specialists, together with researchers in human-computer interaction and medical info

Review of carbonaceous nanoparticles for antibacterial uses in various dental infections.

The mouth cavity is the second most complex microbial community in the human body. It is composed of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. An imbalance in the oral microbiota may lead to various conditions, including caries, soft tissue infections, periodontitis, root canal infections, peri-implantitis (PI), pulpitis, candidiasis, and denture stomatitis. Additionally, several locally administered antimicrobials have been suggested for dentistry in surgical and non-surgical applications. The main drawbacks are increased antimicrobial resistance, the risk of upsetting the natural microbiota, a

A Narrative Review on Advancing Pediatric Oral Health: Comprehensive Strategies for the Prevention and Management of Dental Challenges in Children.

Oral health is fundamental to overall well-being, especially in childhood, when dental structures and lifelong habits are established. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of children's dental development, common oral health challenges, and evidence-based preventive strategies. Key topics include the mechanisms of tooth development, the eruption processes of primary and permanent dentition, and the management of developmental abnormalities. The prevalence, risk factors, and health impacts of dental caries in children are examined, underscoring the need for early intervention and targe

Effect of oral health status and oral function on malnutrition in community-dwelling older adult dental patients: A two-year prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To survey oral status in detail and clarify the factors associated with nutritional status as evaluated by the Mini Nutritional Assessment. BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is common in older adults and increases the risk of frailty, sarcopenia, and mortality. However, few longitudinal studies have been performed to investigate the causal effect of oral status on malnutrition in detail, and the information reported in those longitudinal studies has been limited to dentition status and swallowing ability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants in this prospective cohort study were patien

An evaluation of sepsis in dentistry.

Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. It is a major health concern and causes substantial morbidity and mortality. It is imperative that the signs of sepsis are identified early in both adult and paediatric patients and appropriately escalated to initiate early treatment and improve prognosis. This paper aims to discuss the change in classification from the previous systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) criteria to the current definition in adults and also the unchanged definition in children. The hallmark signs of sepsis (

Issues in financing dental care for the elderly.

The elderly make up an increasingly larger segment of the patient population in dental practices. This article reviews recent epidemiologic, demographic, and health services research, and concludes that significant segments of the elderly are at high risk for oral disease and/or limited access to dental treatment, and consequently warrant classification as high-risk groups for policy considerations. It then proposes policy options to the dental community and public decision makers. Oral care can be viewed as having three components. Two basic components are the primary care component--which in

Comparative Study of Methods for Caries Risk Evaluation: CAMBRA, the Cariogram, and Caries Risk Semaphore.

Background/Objectives: Caries risk assessment is essential for the management of dental caries. There are different assessment methods with the most commonly used being CAMBRA, the Cariogram, and Caries Risk Semaphore (CRS). The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic agreement between the three different caries risk assessment methods mentioned above. Methods: This study was conducted in the Dental Clinic of the University of Valencia by Preventive and Community Dentistry II students on patients examined during clinical practices (n = 672). Patients were evaluated to determine their

Effectiveness of oral health interventions for schoolchildren from disadvantaged backgrounds: a systematic review protocol.

Disadvantaged schoolchildren from rural and low socioeconomic backgrounds face persistent oral health inequalities, specifically dental caries, and periodontal diseases. This protocol aims to review the effectiveness of promotive and preventive oral health interventions for improving the oral health of primary schoolchildren in these areas. We will search the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) via EBSCOhost, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Dentistry and Oral Sciences databases for studies published from 2000-2023. The review includes random

The latest research trends in primary biliary cholangitis: a bibliometric analysis.

The bibliometric analysis uses the citation count of an article to measure its impact in the scientific community, but no study has been undertaken to determine the most influential papers in the field of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). This study aimed to investigate the global research interest regarding PBC in dentistry using a bibliometric approach. We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database to find the top 100 most cited (T100) articles focusing on PBC. The information about each article including citations, authors, journals, countries, institutions, and keywords was reco

Knowledge of microbial composition and antimicrobials' susceptibility to periodontal abscesses is vital for their successful treatment. The current study aims to provide a thorough overview of the clinical and microbial features of periodontal abscesses of the local community. The study was carried out at Rehman College of Dentistry, Peshawar, Pakistan between December 2019 to March 2020. Clinical measurements and microbial samples were collected from 45 subjects. Microbial samples were anaerobically cultured for the growth of selected bacterial species. E-test was used to assess the susceptib
