Preparing an Intervention to Increase Engagement with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Resource among Community Mental Health Consumers with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

Suicide rates are high among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and community mental health (CMH) settings have potential to play a critical role in suicide prevention efforts. Crisis lines, such as the 988 Lifeline, are found to positively impact mental health and suicide outcomes, yet data show utilization rates are low among high-risk individuals, such as those with SSDs. This qualitative study employs community-engaged methods to modify a brief single-session Crisis Line Facilitation (CLF) intervention for individuals with SSDs in CMH to increase the likelihood of eng

Parent-reported genetic counselor adherence to the NSGC practice resource for communicating a potential prenatal diagnosis: Impact on the Down syndrome diagnosis experience.

In 2011, the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) published practice resources about communicating a prenatal or postnatal diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS). However, the impact of GC adherence to those recommendations on patient experiences has been unknown. The objective of this analysis was to investigate perceived GC adherence to professional recommendations for delivering a DS diagnosis and the impact on parental diagnosis experiences and the information and support offered. Parents of children with DS born between 2016 and 2021 completed a survey distributed by 12 local DS organiz

Discharge planning and resource utilization for minimizing readmissions in acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure: Insights from an observational study in a community hospital.

This cross-sectional study analyzed discharge disposition in 1,584 readmitted patients aged 65 or older with acute exacerbation of chronic heart failure (AECHF) in a large community hospital from April 2021 to April 2022. The study aimed to explore the relationship between age (65-74, 75-85, and 85 or older) and gender (male, female) with discharge disposition. Results revealed that 55.6 % were discharged for home self-care, 27.3 % with external home health support, and 17.1 % to skilled nursing facilities. Logistic regression showed no significant differences in discharge between age groups.

Repeat community-based screening for school-age congenital heart disease: impact on the detection of cases requiring treatment in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: School-based screening is a critical strategy for detecting congenital heart disease (CHD) in resource-limited regions, yet single-round programs may miss a substantial number of treatable cases. The value of repeat screening in identifying these missed cases remains underexplored. METHODS: As part of the Yunnan Provincial Comprehensive Plan for CHD Prevention and Control, we conducted two rounds of community-based CHD screening using cardiac auscultation followed by portable echocardiography in 23 counties. The first round (2017-2020) screened 1,024,998 children aged 3-18 years,

Evaluating the effectiveness of community-informed resource dissemination at increasing knowledge and testing rates among private well water owners in a statewide population.

BACKGROUND: Threats to groundwater quality pose health risks to private well owners. Knowledge gaps are the main reason for low testing rates. Yet, few studies have examined the extent to which community-informed resource distribution increases knowledge and promotes private well testing. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the effectiveness of resource dissemination in promoting increased knowledge and private well testing. METHODS: Community-informed resources were developed that included 6 domains: regulation, testing recommendations, local resources, rationale for testing, state and federal resources,

Impact of a novel community-based lifestyle intervention program on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk in a resource-poor setting in the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in Latin America and in the Caribbean. We present evidence that a cost-effective and sustainable approach to lifestyle modification in underdeveloped countries can be implemented using community members as healthcare champions. METHODS: Of 222 community members screened in the impoverished community of Villa Juana, Santo Domingo, 69% had prediabetes or diabetes and 79 of these were enrolled. In a 1-day session, trained lifestyle educators from the USA trained ten lay community members to lead groups oriented to li

Human resource constraints and the prospect of task-sharing among community health workers for the detection of early signs of pre-eclampsia in Ogun State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The dearth of health personnel in low income countries has attracted global attention. Ways as to how health care services can be delivered in a more efficient and effective way using available health personnel are being explored. Task-sharing expands the responsibilities of low-cadre health workers and allows them to share these responsibilities with highly qualified health care providers in an effort to best utilize available human resources. This is appropriate in a country like Nigeria where there is a shortage of qualified health professionals and a huge burden of maternal mor

Stepwise Targeted Screening for Familial Hypercholesterolemia in a Resource-Limited Setting: A Scalable Model Linking Premature Coronary Artery Disease and Community Screening in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant disorder associated with a substantially increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), universal FH screening is often impractical, highlighting the need for targeted screening strategies embedded within existing health systems. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the detection yield and real-world implementation feasibility of a stepwise targeted FH screening strategy in a resource-limited setting. METHODS: This multi-component implementation study included retrospectiv

Divergent surveillance needs and resource allocation for COVID-19 and influenza: insights from a community-based syndromic surveillance study in Shanghai (2024-2025).

INTRODUCTION: The rapid evolution and symptom overlap of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and influenza challenge the effectiveness of current surveillance and healthcare resource planning. However, comparative evidence regarding their surveillance sensitivity and healthcare burden remains limited, particularly within concurrent community populations that capture the full spectrum of disease severity. METHODS: To address this gap, data were derived from a community-based syndromic surveillance cohort in Shanghai, followed weekly between May 2024 and August 2025. We analyzed symptom profile
