Membrane-covered composting systems have been increasingly used to enhance humification, yet the microbial-metabolic mechanisms of humic substance (HS) transformation under inoculated conditions remain unclear. This study compared membrane-covered and uncovered composting systems under identical microbial inoculation conditions by integrating excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM-PARAFAC), untargeted metabolomics, and high-throughput microbial community profiling. Under microbial inoculation conditions, membrane covering increased humic-like components by 7.8% while reducin

Background: Crude oil refinery waste sludge (COWS) ranks among the most compositionally complex and ecotoxicologically hazardous industrial residues. Although bulk total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and summed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal are routinely reported, the metabolite-level biochemical fate of individual petrogenic compounds, spanning ring dihydroxylation, catechol cleavage, and entry into central carbon metabolism, remains largely unmapped under co-composting with diverse animal manures. Objectives: This study aimed to construct a metabolite-resolved, microbially anch

Industrial-scale thermophilic composting of sewage sludge (SS) offers a promising strategy to reduce antimicrobial resistance risks in agricultural soils, although the impacts of its application on soils remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of SS compost, produced thermophilically with and without lime, on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) related to fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial communities in tropical clay and sandy loam soils over 100 days, using high-throughput qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Multiple elements associated with antimicrobial resistance in compost may escape into the air during the composting process, including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), human pathogenic bacteria (HPBs), and even antibiotics. Although antibiotics play a critical role in the evolution of resistance in HPBs, no information is available on airborne antibiotics in composting facilities. In this study, we systematically quantified airborne antibiotics, ARGs, and HPBs in comparison with those in compost. The burden of antibiotics in the air reached 4.17 ± 2.71 × 102 ng/g, significantly higher than

The effects of inorganic fertilizer addition method on the organic-inorganic co-composting process, especially the structure of humic acid and the mechanism of microbial nutrient restriction, are unclear. In this article, the effects of one-time and fractional addition of inorganic fertilizer on the structure of humic acid, extracellular enzyme activity, extracellular enzyme stoichiometry and the culturable growth-promoting bacteria during organic-inorganic co-composting were determined. The results showed that the addition of inorganic fertilizer promoted the humification degree of compost. C

Abatement of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure by composting has attracted attention. This study investigated the effect of adding magnesium-modified biochar (MBC) on ARGs and microbial communities in chicken manure composting. Twelve genes for tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides, and mobile genetic elements were measured in the compost pile. The results showed that after 45 days of the composting, the treatment groups of MBC had longer high temperature periods, significantly higher germination indices (GI) and lower phytotoxicity. There were four major dominant ph

Odor released from the sewage sludge composting process often has a negative impact on the sewage sludge treatment facility and becomes a hindrance to promoting compost technology. This study investigated the effect of adding KNO3 on the emissions of volatile sulfur compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and carbon disulfide (CS2), during sewage sludge composting and on the physicochemical properties of compost products, such as arylsulfatase activity, available sulfur, total sulfur, moisture content, and germination index. The results showed that the addition of KN

Traditional composting has already shown a certain effect in eliminating antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It is worth noting that the rebounding of ARGs and the succession of the bacterial community during conventional aerobic composting are still serious threats. Considering the probable risk, improved and adaptable technologies are urgently needed to control antibiotic resistance efficiently. This study monitored how thermophilic aerobic composting affected the ARGs, as well as the bacterial diversity during the composting of

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the major components of the odor emitted from sewage sludge composting plants and are generally associated with odorous nuisances and health risks. However, few studies have considered the potential ozone generation caused by VOCs emitted from sewage sludge composting plants. This study investigated the VOC emissions from a full-scale composting plant. Five major treatment units of the composting plant were chosen as the monitoring locations, including the dewatered room, dewatered sludge, blender room, fermentation workshop, and product units. The ferment

Lime addition as well as formation of struvite through the addition of magnesium and phosphorus salts provide good pH buffering and may reduce odour emission. This study investigated the odour emission during food waste composting under the influence of lime addition, and struvite formation. Composting was performed in 20-L reactors for 56days using artificial food waste mixed with sawdust at 1.2:1 (w/w dry basis). VFA was one of the most important odours during food waste composting. However, during thermophilic phase, ammonia is responsible for max odour index in the exhaust gas. Trapping am

Paper mill bamboo sludge (PMBS) and Paper mill lime waste (PMLW) are extensively produced as solid wastes in paper mills. Untreated PMBS and PMLW contain substantial amount of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr) in soluble forms. Efficiency of vermiconversion and aerobic composting with these wastes is reported here. Adopted bioconversion systems enhanced the availability of some essential nutrients (N, P, K and Zn) in various combinations of cow dung (CD) with PMBS and PMLW. Colonization of nitrogen fixing bacteria and phosphate solubilizing bacteria considerably intensified under the vermiconv

The use of antimicrobials in food animal production leads to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and animal manure constitutes the largest reservoir of such AMR. In previous studies, composted swine manure was found to contain substantially lower abundance of AMR genes that encode resistance to tetracyclines (tet genes) and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLS(B)) superfamily (erm genes), than manures that were treated by lagoons or biofilters. In this study, temporal changes in AMR carried by both cultivated and uncultivated bacteria present in swine manure during simulat

A laboratory study was conducted to enhance removal of residual contaminants after composting in a highly petroleum-contaminated soil by combining Fenton-like pretreatment with biodegradation. The contaminants were characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) during soil treatment. The optimum molar ratio of H(2)O(2) and Fe(3+) was 300/1 determined in batch experiments. At the end of Fenton-like treatment, total dichloromethane-extractable organics (TEO) decreased from 32,400 to 21,800 mg kg(-1) soil, and the toxicity of soil was reduced greatly in t

It was previously reported that struvite crystals could be formed in the aerobic composting reaction provided that Mg and P salts are added [Bioresource Technology 79 (2001) 129]. The formation of struvite crystals significantly reduced gaseous loss of ammonia and resulted in substantial increase in the ammonia content in the compost, attaining 1.5%. In this context, the present study was conducted to determine the optimal doses of Mg and P salts for struvite crystallization. It was found that cumulative ammonia production was about 33-36% of the initial total nitrogen in the aerobic compostin

Pharmaceuticals enter the environment mainly via municipal wastewater treatment plants, where some compounds bind to sewage sludge during treatment processes. The contaminated sludge often undergoes fermentation and composting and is later used as a soil amendment. This study aims to investigate the fate of five pharmaceuticals letrozole, tamoxifen, carbamazepine, diclofenac, and naproxen, in environmental solid matrices, including sewage sludge, compost, and sediment. An analytical method based on microwave-assisted extraction, SPE, and UPLC-MS/MS was developed and validated. The most abundan

BACKGROUND: Soilborne fungal phytopathogens pose a significant threat to global food security. While chemical control remains an effective method for managing these pathogens, increasing regulations due to health and environmental concerns, along with rising fungicide resistance, have restricted their use, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. The use of compost to enhance soil fertility and suppress plant diseases is well documented. Several studies have underlined the role of microorganisms in disease suppression, but the mechanisms facilitating this disease suppression

This study investigated the presence of culturable bacterial pathogens, and antibiotic resistance and associated genes (quantitative PCR) in commercially available composted products from animal excrements or manure (n = 7), urban wastes (n = 1) or (sewage sludge) (n = 1). Metals quantification and 16S rRNA-based bacterial community composition analyses supported the results to infer potential risks to downstream environments (e.g., soils). Bacilli and Actinomycetes were the dominant bacterial classes in seven composts, while two were dominated by different classes of Pseudomonadota or the cla

The fate of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole in amended soils remains unclear, moreover in basic soils. This work aimed to assess the adsorption, leaching, and biodegradation of sulfamethoxazole in unamended and biochar from holm oak pruning (BC)- and green compost from urban pruning (CG)-amended basic soil. Adsorption properties of the organic amendments and soil were determined by adsorption isotherms of sulfamethoxazole. The leachability of this antibiotic from unamended (Soil) and BC- (Soil + BC) and GC- (Soil + GC) amended soil was determined by leaching columns using water as solvent up t

Composting is an important decentralized technology for treating multiple biodegradable organic wastes in rural areas. However, compared to industrial composting (i.e., time and temperature protocols), rural composting is less well-controlled, and the risk of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in these composts needs to be determined. We performed a quantitative determination of ARGs and both prokaryotes and eukaryotes to investigate the liquid-solid leaching ratio and the relationship between ARGs and microbial communities in solid and water extracts of composts collected from rural areas. We
