The Development of a Web-Based Application to Support Informal Caregivers of Individuals With Head and Neck Cancer: Human-Centered Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers (ICs), often family members or close friends, provide essential support to individuals with head and neck cancer. However, they are frequently unprepared for the emotional, practical, and medical challenges involved. Web-based applications offer promising opportunities to support ICs, but their long-term adoption and acceptance remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the development of Carer eSupport, a web-based application to support ICs' well-being and preparedness for caregiving. We detail the design and functionality of the Carer eSupport applicat

Cyber-Sexual Crime and Social Inequality: Exploring Socioeconomic and Technological Determinants.

Cyber-sexual crimes have become a growing concern in the digital age, as rapid technological progress continues to create new forms of violence and victimization. These offenses affect society unevenly, striking more intensely among minors, women, and other vulnerable groups. Their prevalence is shaped by structural inequalities, educational, economic, and technological, that condition both exposure to digital risks and the capacity for protection. Although international research has connected these disparities with digital victimization, evidence from Spain remains limited. The aim was to ana

A clinician-monitored 'PTSD Coach' intervention: findings from two pilot feasibility and acceptability studies in a resource-constrained setting.

Background: The high prevalence of trauma exposure and consequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is well documented in low- and middle-income countries, and most individuals with PTSD have limited access to treatment in these settings. Freely available internet-based interventions, such as PTSD Coach (web-based and mobile application), can help to address this gap and improve access to and efficiency of care. Objective: We conducted two pilot studies to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of PTSD Coach in a South African resource-constrained context. M

Dutch home-based pre-reading intervention with children at familial risk of dyslexia.

Children (5 and 6 years old, n = 30) at familial risk of dyslexia received a home-based intervention that focused on phoneme awareness and letter knowledge in the year prior to formal reading instruction. The children were compared to a no-training at-risk control group (n = 27), which was selected a year earlier. After training, we found a small effect on a composite score of phoneme awareness (d = 0.29) and a large effect on receptive letter knowledge (d = 0.88). In first grade, however, this did not result in beneficial effects for the experimental group in word reading and spelling. Result

Electronic screen media for persons with autism spectrum disorders: results of a survey.

Social and anecdotal reports suggest a predilection for visual media among individuals on the autism spectrum, yet no formal investigation has explored the extent of that use. Using a distributed questionnaire design, parents and caregivers report on time allotted toward media, including observable behaviors and communicative responses. More time was spent engaged with electronic screen media (ESM) than any other leisure activity. Television and movie viewing was more popular than computer usage. Across media platforms, animated programs were more highly preferred. Prevalent verbal and physica

Digital Isolation and Depression Risk in Older Adults Using the National Health and Aging Trends Study Database: 8-Year Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid advancement of digital technologies has profoundly transformed communication practices. However, this technological revolution has also led to "digital isolation," a form of social disconnection caused by limited or absent engagement with digital communication tools, including smartphones, computers, email, and the internet. This issue is particularly concerning for older adults, as it may increase their likelihood of developing mental health disorders, with depression being a primary concern. Although digital isolation has been studied less frequently than traditional so

Connecting internet use with gaps in cancer knowledge.

This study applies the knowledge gap hypothesis to the specific domain of Internet use for cancer information. In particular, this study examines disparities in online information seeking by education and ethnicity, and subsequent gaps in cancer knowledge. Perceived risk of cancer and ease of connection to the Internet are concerned as contingent factors influencing knowledge gaps. A subsample of the 2003 Health Information National Trends Survey-t-hose who have ever been online--was analyzed. Data supported the hypothesis that high education groups and White Americans were more likely to use
