Assessment of bone microarchitecture in chronic kidney disease: a comparison of 2D bone texture analysis and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography at the radius and tibia.

Bone microarchitecture can be studied noninvasively using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). However, this technique is not widely available, so more simple techniques may be useful. BMA is a new 2D high-resolution digital X-ray device, allowing for bone texture analysis with a fractal parameter (H(mean)). The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the reproducibility of BMA at two novel sites (radius and tibia) in addition to the conventional site (calcaneus), (2) to compare the results obtained with BMA at all of those sites, and (3) to study the relation

Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography venography compared with ultrasonography for detection of peripherally inserted central venous catheter-related thrombosis in patients with cancer: the DETECT study.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography is the primary diagnostic imaging modality for upper extremity deep vein thrombosis related to peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs). Computed tomography (CT) venography may offer higher sensitivity while additionally providing information about the superior vena cava and central pulmonary arteries. OBJECTIVES: We compared the diagnostic accuracy of CT venography with ultrasonography for screen-detected PICC-related venous thromboembolism (VTE). METHODS: Consecutive adult patients with cancer were enrolled before PICC placement. On day 20 ± 5, scr

Changes in peripheral quantitative computed tomography measured bone density, size, and strength in Zimbabwean children with and without HIV over one year: a cohort study.

Understanding bone accrual in adolescents may inform approaches to improve skeletal health and reduce adult fracture risk. We investigated the effect of HIV on bone mineral accrual assessed by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). Children with HIV (CWH) on ART for ≥2 years, and children without HIV (CWOH), aged 8-16 years (n = 609), had tibial pQCT scans at 0 and 12 months. Linear regression estimated sex-stratified differences in change (∆) and mean pQCT bone density (trabecular and cortical), size (total cross-sectional area [CSA]), and strength (SSI) between CWH and CWOH, adj

In vivo analysis of subchondral trabecular bone in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee using second-generation high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT).

OBJECTIVE: Subchondral bone plays an important role in the pathological mechanisms of knee osteoarthritis (OA). High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) is an imaging modality allowing noninvasive microstructural analysis of human bone, and the second generation enables scanning of the knee. The purpose of this study was to perform in vivo analysis of subchondral trabecular bone in patients with medial knee OA, to elucidate features of bone microstructure in medial knee OA, and to investigate relationships between bone microstructure and both stage of disease and l

A customized protocol to assess bone quality in the metacarpal head, metacarpal shaft and distal radius: a high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography precision study.

BACKGROUND: High Resolution-Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) is an emerging technology for evaluation of bone quality in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). However, there are limitations with standard HR-pQCT imaging protocols for examination of regions of bone commonly affected in RA. We developed a customized protocol for evaluation of volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and microstructure at the metacarpal head (MH), metacarpal shaft (MS) and ultra-ultra-distal (UUD) radius; three sites commonly affected in RA. The purpose was to evaluate short-term measurement precision for

A new method of segmentation of compact-appearing, transitional and trabecular compartments and quantification of cortical porosity from high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomographic images.

A transitional or cortico-trabecular junctional zone exists at any location composed of both cortical and trabecular bones such as the metaphyses of tubular bones and short bones like the femoral neck. The transitional zone comprises the inner cortex adjacent to the medullary canal and trabeculae abutting against the cortex contiguous with the endocortical surface. This is a site of vigorous remodeling. Intracortical remodeling cavitates the inner cortex expanding this transitional zone at the price of compact-appearing cortex so that it contains porosity, cortical fragments that resemble trab

Effects of an excess and a deficiency of endogenous parathyroid hormone on volumetric bone mineral density and bone geometry determined by peripheral quantitative computed tomography in female subjects.

Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is useful for evaluating volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) as well as bone mineral density (BMD) of cortical and trabecular bones separately. Although PTH affects cortical and trabecular bones differently, the effects of endogenous PTH on vBMD and bone geometry have not previously been examined with pQCT. We, therefore, investigated the effects of an excess and a deficiency of endogenous PTH on bone by employing dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and pQCT in 36 female patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (hyper), nine female patients w

Optimizing learning comfort: ergonomic influences on children's transition to online education.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the implementation of lockdown measures, resulting in children attending classes from their homes through online platforms. This study aimed to examine the impact of studying at home on children by investigating various aspects related to their study environment. Data were gathered through two questionnaires administered in Jordan: One targeted children aged 8-15 year through interviews, while the other targeted parents with at least one school-aged child through an online survey. The interview-based survey (N = 152) identified significant factors such as the

Multivariate analysis based on the maximum standard unit value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography and computed tomography features for preoperative predicting of visceral pleural invasion in patients with subpleural clinical stage IA peripheral lung adenocarcinoma.

PURPOSE: Preoperative prediction of visceral pleural invasion (VPI) is important because it enables thoracic surgeons to choose appropriate surgical plans. This study aimed to develop and validate a multivariate logistic regression model incorporating the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and valuable computed tomography (CT) signs for the non-invasive prediction of VPI status in subpleural clinical stage IA lung adenocarcinoma patients before surgery. METHODS: A total of 140 patients with subpleural clinical stage IA peripheral lung adenocarcinoma were recruited and divided into a t

Bone Health in Breast Cancer Patients: Comparative Evaluation Using Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Scan and High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is highly prevalent among Indian women and is further exacerbated by cancer-directed therapies such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and radiotherapy. Patients with breast cancer are particularly susceptible to bone loss. While dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) remains the gold standard, it does not assess bone microarchitecture. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) may provide additional insights. METHODS: This cross-sectional pilot study was conducted between May and December 2024 at a tertiary care center and included 54 wome

End-of-treatment positron emission tomography/computed tomography complete remission is highly prognostic in nodal peripheral T-cell lymphoma: An Australasian-Canadian collaborative study.

While end-of-treatment (EOT) imaging after front-line therapy is prognostic in nodal peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), its subtype-specific significance remains unclear. Retrospective review of patients with nodal PTCL included in the Australasian Lymphoma and Related Diseases Registry and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre lymphoma database between 2011 and 2024. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and positive and negative predictive values (PPV/NPV) of an EOT positron emission tomography/computed tomography response were evaluated. We identified 451 patients. Median fo

Non-invasive quantification of bone (re)modeling dynamics in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta treated with setrusumab using timelapse high-resolution peripheral-quantitative computed tomography.

Timelapse imaging using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography has emerged as a non-invasive method to quantify bone (re)modeling. However, there is no consensus on how to perform the procedure. As part of the ASTEROID phase-2b multicenter trial, we used 29 same-day repeated scans from adults with OI to identify a method that minimized measurement error. We evaluated input image type, registration method, segmentation mask, and for grayscale images various values for the voxel density difference considered formed or resorbed, minimum formation/resorption cluster size, and

Healing of tumor-induced osteomalacia as assessed by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography is not similar across the skeleton in the first years following complete tumor excision.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is caused by excessive fibroblast growth factor 23 production mainly from phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Surgical excision or tumor ablation are the preferred treatment. Information on bone microarchitecture parameters assessed by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography is limited. We report a woman with hypophosphatemic osteomalacia with generalized pain, weakness and recurrent fractures, and a large thoracic vertebral mass extending to the posterior mediastinum. Detailed radiologic and histopathologic evaluation revealed a phosphaturic mesench

Comparison of bone microstructures via high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in patients with different stages of chronic kidney disease before and after starting hemodialysis.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) negatively affects bone strength; however, the osteoporotic conditions in patients with CKD are not fully understood. Moreover, the changes in bone microstructure between pre-dialysis and dialysis are unknown. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) reveals the three-dimensional microstructures of the bone. We aimed to evaluate bone microstructures in patients with different stages of CKD. This study included 119 healthy men and 40 men admitted to Nagasaki University Hospital for inpatient education or the initiation of hemodialysis. T

The influence of systemic-to-pulmonary arterial shunts and peripheral vasculatures in univentricular circulations: Focus on coronary perfusion and aortic arch hemodynamics through computational multi-domain modeling.

Initial palliation for univentricular hearts can be achieved via a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt (SPS). SPS configurations differ depending on the proximal anastomosis location, which might lead to dissimilar coronary and upper body perfusions. Mathematical modeling can be used to explore the local and global hemodynamic effects of the SPSs. In literature there are few patient-specific models of SPS that specifically address the influence of both the local and peripheral vasculature. In this study, multi-domain models of univentricular circulations were developed to investigate local hemodynamic

Pleural recurrence after surgery for pleomorphic adenoma arising from peripheral lung: computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle biopsy as a possible mechanism of local failure.

A 75-year-old male was referred to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow found in the right lung 2 years prior that had been increasing in size. Chest computed tomography showed a 1-cm well-defined nodule in the periphery of the right middle lobe. Although a computed tomography-guided percutaneous needle biopsy was performed, the results were indeterminate. In observations over the course of 1 year, the tumor size increased. Surgical resection was finally performed for diagnosis and treatment, and histological findings revealed a pulmonary pleomorphic adenoma. 2 years after surgery, pleur

Bone health and body composition in pre-frail and frail older adult women: insights from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT).

BACKGROUND: Age-related muscle loss and obesity are linked to poor bone health and increased fracture risk, though findings in frail populations are inconsistent. This study examined differences in bone microarchitecture across body composition phenotypes in frail older women. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 280 older women were included, 109 of whom met Fried frailty criteria. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and classified into four groups: low appendicular lean mass (LALM; <20th percentile of residuals), obesity (fat mass index >13 kg/m²), obesit

Impaired bone health after pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment despite normal DXA: insights from high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in childhood. With improved survival rates, more attention has turned to long-term outcomes such as bone health. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) allows a three-dimensional assessment of cortical and trabecular bone and may have advantages over standard dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The aim of this study was to evaluate whether HR-pQCT can detect early bone health impairment in children following ALL treatment. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, HR-pQCT findings in ch
