Automatic analysis of pediatric renal ultrasound using shape, anatomical and image acquisition priors.

In this paper we present a segmentation method for ultrasound (US) images of the pediatric kidney, a difficult and barely studied problem. Our method segments the kidney on 2D sagittal US images and relies on minimal user intervention and a combination of improvements made to the Active Shape Model (ASM) framework. Our contributions include particle swarm initialization and profile training with rotation correction. We also introduce our methodology for segmentation of the kidney's collecting system (CS), based on graph-cuts (GC) with intensity and positional priors. Our intensity model correc

Diminished cholesterol efflux mediated by HDL and coronary artery disease in young male anabolic androgenic steroid users.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) have been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). AAS abuse leads to a remarkable decrease in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) plasma concentration, which could be a key factor in the atherosclerotic process. Moreover, not only the concentration of HDL, but also its functionality, plays a pivotal role in CAD. We tested the functionality of HDL by cholesterol efflux and antioxidant capacity. We also evaluated the prevalence of CAD in AAS users. METHODS: Twenty strength-trained AAS users (AASU) age 29 ± 5 yr, 20 age-matched strength-t

Development of a Semi-Automated Tool Based on Computer Vision Methods for Safety Assessment of Micromobility Users.

The operational behavior of micromobility users is a key indicator of the safety performance and design quality of cycling infrastructure; yet, existing video-based methods either require intensive manual processing or locate users coarsely through the centroid of the bounding box. This study presents and validates a semi-automated computer-vision tool that extracts the lateral position and instantaneous speed of micromobility users from bird's-eye-view video recordings acquired with a single camera. The tool, implemented in Python 3.10.11, integrates bike lane segmentation, background-subtrac

Coevolution of Myoelectric Hand Control under the Tactile Interaction among Fingers and Objects.

The usability of a prosthetic hand differs significantly from that of a real hand. Moreover, the complexity of manipulation increases as the number of degrees of freedom to be controlled increases, making manipulation with biological signals extremely difficult. To overcome this problem, users need to select a grasping posture that is adaptive to the object and a stable grasping method that prevents the object from falling. In previous studies, these have been left to the operating skills of the user, which is extremely difficult to achieve. In this study, we demonstrate how stable and adaptiv

Trainer in a pocket - proof-of-concept of mobile, real-time, foot kinematics feedback for gait pattern normalization in individuals after stroke, incomplete spinal cord injury and elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: Walking disabilities negatively affect inclusion in society and quality of life and increase the risk for secondary complications. It has been shown that external feedback applied by therapists and/or robotic training devices enables individuals with gait abnormalities to consciously normalize their gait pattern. However, little is known about the effects of a technically-assisted over ground feedback therapy. The aim of this study was to assess whether automatic real-time feedback provided by a shoe-mounted inertial-sensor-based gait therapy system is feasible in individuals with

Accelerometry-enabled measurement of walking performance with a robotic exoskeleton: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical scores for evaluating walking skills with lower limb exoskeletons are often based on a single variable, such as distance walked or speed, even in cases where a host of features are measured. We investigated how to combine multiple features such that the resulting score has high discriminatory power, in particular with few patients. A new score is introduced that allows quantifying the walking ability of patients with spinal cord injury when using a powered exoskeleton. METHODS: Four spinal cord injury patients were trained to walk over ground with the ReWalk™ exoskeleton.

Lightweight structure-aware explanations for rule-based models: application to radiotherapy risk communication in breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Rule-based models are often considered inherently interpretable because their explicit logical structure allows users to trace predictions back to human-readable rules. However, in complex domains such as healthcare, multiple rules involving numerous attributes may be activated simultaneously, making it difficult for end users to identify the most influential factors behind a prediction. This can limit practical transparency, particularly in clinical shared decision-making, where clear and trustworthy explanations are essential. An example is communicating the risk of side effects f

Goal selection versus process control in a brain-computer interface based on sensorimotor rhythms.

In a brain-computer interface (BCI) utilizing a process control strategy, the signal from the cortex is used to control the fine motor details normally handled by other parts of the brain. In a BCI utilizing a goal selection strategy, the signal from the cortex is used to determine the overall end goal of the user, and the BCI controls the fine motor details. A BCI based on goal selection may be an easier and more natural system than one based on process control. Although goal selection in theory may surpass process control, the two have never been directly compared, as we are reporting here.

Development and face validity testing of pyeloplasty surgical training models.

BACKGROUND: There are few realistic and accessible laparoscopic pyeloplasty training models. The aim of this study is to develop a functional training model through user-centered design that depicts the pathological features of pelvicoureteric junction obstruction (PUJO). METHODS: Realistic patient-matched anatomical models of the kidney, renal pelvis, and ureter were created based on segmentations of computed tomography (CT) scans of a paediatric patient with PUJO who underwent laparoscopic pyeloplasty. Three training model versions (polyjet, resin, and silicone) were produced, tested, and p

Vibration stimulation enhances robustness in teleoperation robot system with EEG and eye-tracking hybrid control.

INTRODUCTION: The application of non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in robotic control is limited by insufficient signal quality and decoding capabilities. Enhancing the robustness of BCIs without increasing the cognitive load remains a major challenge in brain-control technology. METHODS: This study presents a teleoperation robotic system based on hybrid control of electroencephalography (EEG) and eye movement signals, and utilizes vibration stimulation to assist motor imagery (MI) training and enhance control signals. A control experiment involving eight subjects was conducted to

Stimulus modality influences session-to-session transfer of training effects in auditory and tactile streaming-based P300 brain-computer interfaces.

Despite recent successes, patients suffering from locked-in syndrome (LIS) still struggle to communicate using vision-independent brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In this study, we compared auditory and tactile BCIs, regarding training effects and cross-stimulus-modality transfer effects, when switching between stimulus modalities. We utilized a streaming-based P300 BCI, which was developed as a low workload approach to prevent potential BCI-inefficiency. We randomly assigned 20 healthy participants to two groups. The participants received three sessions of training either using an auditory B

Neurofeedback Training of the Control Network in Children Improves Brain Computer Interface Performance.

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

Uncertainty Assessment for Deep Learning Radiotherapy Applications.

In the last 5 years, deep learning applications for radiotherapy have undergone great development. An advantage of radiotherapy over radiological applications is that data in radiotherapy are well structured, standardized, and annotated. Furthermore, there is much to be gained in automating the current laborious workflows in radiotherapy. After the initial peak in the belief in deep learning, researchers have also identified fundamental weaknesses of deep learning. The basic assumption in deep learning is that the training and test data originate from the same data generating process. This is

Simplified sperm testing devices: a possible tool to overcome lack of accessibility and inconsistency in male factor infertility diagnosis. An opportunity for low- and middle- income countries.

BACKGROUND: Manual semen assessment (MSA) is a key component in a male's fertility assessment. Clinicians rely on it to make diagnostic and treatment decisions. When performed manually, this routine laboratory test is prone to variability due to human intervention which can lead to misdiagnosis and consequently over- or under- treatment. For standardisation, continuous training, quality control (QC) programs and pricy Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) systems have been proposed, yet, without resolving intra- and inter-laboratory variability. In response, promising simplified sperm testin
