Improving physiotherapists' ability to recognise the presence of a serious pathology with a digital educational training: a mixed methods feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Due to an aging population, the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders and serious pathologies like spinal fractures and cancer is rising. Physiotherapists are ideally positioned to screen for signs and symptoms of serious pathologies (red flags) early; however, training in recognizing these signs and symptoms is limited. Additionally, evidence on the effectiveness of digital educational tools for this purpose is sparse. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a digital educational training designed to improve physiotherapists' ability to identify serious pathologies. METHOD

"The Mystery of the Cell Kingdom": an online game to improve the learning of thyroid physiology.

Games and analogies can significantly enrich the learning experience when integrated with traditional expository teaching methods. With this aim, we developed "The Mystery of the Cell Kingdom," an online game designed to enhance understanding of the physiology of thyroid hormones through a medieval analogy. In the game, students are challenged to apply their knowledge of endocrine physiology to solve a series of relevant questions on the topic. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the game as a complementary review tool for a theoretical lesson on thyroid hormo

The First Year of Global Cleft Surgery Education Through Digital Simulation: A Proof of Concept.

INTRODUCTION: Parallel to worldwide disparities in patient access to health care, the operative opportunities of surgical trainees are increasingly restricted across the globe. Efforts have been directed toward enhancing surgical education outside the operating room and reducing the wide variability in global trainee operative experience. However, high costs and other logistical concerns may limit the reproducibility and sustainability of nonoperative surgical education resources. METHODS: A partnership between the academic, nonprofit, and industry sectors resulted in the development of an on

Low-Fidelity Code Blue Simulation on the Orthopaedic Unit.

Orthopaedic nurses care for a range of patients with comorbid conditions, but because of the implementation of Rapid Response Teams, rarely do orthopaedic patients experience cardiac or respiratory arrest. Rapid Response Teams decrease emergent arrest situations on nursing units by intervening to treat clinical deterioration or move patients to a higher level of care prior to cardiac or respiratory arrest. Orthopaedic nurses still need to be prepared to act emergently with basic life support skills, which are only renewed every 2 years. Review of actual code blue events and the implementation

Comparison of traditional face-to-face teaching with synchronous e-learning in otolaryngology emergencies teaching to medical undergraduates: a randomised controlled trial.

Undergraduate otolaryngology teaching in the UK is generally limited primarily due to curriculum time constraints with traditional face-to-face (FtF) teaching being restrained by the limitations of time and location. Advances in network technology have opened up new doors for the delivery of teaching in the form of online learning. This study compares a traditional instructor-led lecture with synchronous e-learning (SeL) using otolaryngological emergencies teaching as an educational intervention. A randomised controlled trial was designed involving two groups of medical students attending an o

Animal behaviour learning environment: software to facilitate learning in canine and feline behavior therapy.

Interactive software has been developed on CD-ROM to facilitate learning of problem formulation, diagnostic methodology, and therapeutic options in dog and cat behavior problems. Students working in small groups are presented with a signalment, a case history, and brief description of the problem behavior as perceived by the client. Students then navigate through the case history by asking the client questions from an icon-driven question pad. Animated video responses to the questions are provided. Students are then required to rate the significance of the questions and answers with respect to

Interactive computer-aided training of emergency care tactics: an experimental study with medical students.

INTRODUCTION: It is important to know which level of tactical preparedness is reached after completing lectures and training included in a medical curriculum. A computer-based interactive programme aimed for tactical training of emergency care tactics at the scene (Matimed, Matimed Ltd, Kuopio, Finland) was used in testing the skills of 20 medical students. METHOD: In this standardised test, every student first received guided introduction on the technical use of the programme. The test included four severely injured victims. The traumas used were hepatic rupture, flail chest, haemothorax, an

Criterion-related versus non-criterion-related prompt training with severely mentally handicapped children.

Thirty-three severely mentally handicapped children were involved in a study to evaluate the effectiveness of three training programmes in teaching visual discriminations. Three matched sets of subjects each received both a size and an intensity discrimination with either: (1) size prompting; (2) intensity prompting; or (3) no prompting (trial-and-error training). The prompted groups therefore received both criterion-related (CR) and non-criterion-related (NCR) training. Order of presentation of the discriminations was counterbalanced across subjects. There was a significant main effect of tra

Teaching vowel articulation with the computer vowel trainer. Methodology and results.

The Computer Vowel Trainer (CVT) uses linear prediction to estimate and display the shape of the speaker's vocal tract during an utterance. The assessment of the CVT was carried out over a period of three years with 14 profoundly deaf children divided into an experimental and a matched control group. Two main results were obtained: (a) children learning to articulate with the CVT achieve consistently higher articulation scores than those trained with conventional methods; (b) the younger the children, the greater their progress in vowel learning, retention and generalization.

[Virtual guide on ocular self-examination to support the self-care practice for people with HIV/AIDS].

The objective was to describe the process of development of a virtual guide on ocular self-examination for people with HIV/aids. The methodological proposal followed the five steps recommended by Falkembach: analysis and planning, modeling, implementation, evaluation and distribution. The adequacy of the printed version to the virtual required the construction of a tutorial video, adding illustrative photos for viewing possible ocular changes and interactive tool demonstrating the examination result to the user. In the first material assessment, we diagnosed failures in the layout, thus comman

Computerized respiratory muscle training in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The present study describes the use of simple video games for a 5-week regimen of respiratory muscle training in 15 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) at various stages of the disease. The games were re-arranged to be operated and driven by the respiratory efforts of the patient and to incorporate accurate ventilation and time measurements. Improvement in respiratory performance was determined by maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximal achieved ventilation (VEmax) during a progressive isocapnic hyperventilation manoeuvre (PIHV) and the PIHV duration. The actual training perio

What makes learning and understanding in virtual teams so difficult?

The ideas presented in this article are especially challenged by critical questions raised by the other authors in this special issue. One of the core questions throughout the different studies is whether participants in distributed learning groups are able to successfully work on a common task and achieve a type of interaction that leads them to educationally relevant higher-level discussion and learning. This article discusses the central findings of these studies in light of the recent research on computer-supported collaborative learning. At the beginning of the article, typical problems a

A visual graphic/haptic rendering model for hysteroscopic procedures.

Hysteroscopy is an extensively popular option in evaluating and treating women with infertility. The procedure utilises an endoscope, inserted through the vagina and cervix to examine the intra-uterine cavity via a monitor. The difficulty of hysteroscopy from the surgeon's perspective is the visual spatial perception of interpreting 3D images on a 2D monitor, and the associated psychomotor skills in overcoming the fulcrum-effect. Despite the widespread use of this procedure, current qualified hysteroscopy surgeons have not been trained the fundamentals through an organised curriculum. The emer
