Concepts of drugs: differences in conceptual structure across groups with different levels of drug experience.

Seventy-seven college students varying in degree of drug use experience rated the perceived similarities of all possible combinations of 16 drugs classes (cigarettes, other tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, barbiturates, minor and major tranquilizers, amphetamines, amphetamine derivatives, cocaine, heroin, opiates, hallucinogens, inhalants, PCP, anti-depressants). Multi-dimensional scaling (INDSCAL) and network models (PFNET) indicated that abstainers had only one pharmacological category involving sedatives/depressants, and that they attached more importance to whether drugs were licit vs. illicit

Perception and allocation of time by dyslexic children.

The perception and allocation of time by individuals is closely associated with their observed behaviors in life. A dyslexic child presents unique and interesting problems to educational researchers, teachers, and parents since the information-processing style differs from that of normal children. This study examined not the cognitive understanding of time or problems in measuring time (dyschronometria), but the perception and allocation of time by 26 normal and 21 dyslexic children between the ages of 10 years and 17 years old. These findings were measured by a specifically designed time allo

Locomotion, active choice, and spatial memory in children.

In two studies, children between 4 and 6 years old were tested on a radial search task requiring nonredundant sampling of eight identically labeled positions in a room. In the training phase (5 days), children made free choices by walking between positions, were passively transported in a pushchair, actively directed their own route from a pushchair, or were led on foot to positions selected by the experimenter. When tested (whether walking or directing while seated in a pushchair), children who had either walked independently or directed the experimenter while being pushed performed competent

The rule learning behavior of reading disabled and normal children as a function of task characteristics and instruction.

The purpose of this research was to investigate rule learning in reading disabled (RD) and normal children (chronological age and reading age (RA) match) when required to (a) abstract rules independently, and (b) use rules after instruction. Study 1 required the children to solve problems using shapes and letters. Although there was no difference between groups in the rate of problem solving when children were asked to abstract rules independently, the pattern of errors was different. The RD children made a greater proportion of errors on the negative instance for the more complex problems. In

Precursors of symbol formation and childhood autism.

The salience of various precursory requirements for the formation of symbols is discussed. The conclusion is drawn that several necessary precursors could be assumed, and two experiments are described that were designed to test for the presence of these precursors in autistic children compared to matched retarded children. First, there was a study of the children's ability to imitate and form internal images, and then there was a study of their development of a concept of object permanence and ability to anticipate. These studies led to the conclusion that the autistic children could form inte

Task modulation of visual category selectivity at physical and conceptual levels: An ERP study.

Visual perception emerges from dynamic interactions between bottom‑up sensory input and top‑down, task‑driven expectations. This study tested whether task‑related ERP modulations during object categorization depend on low‑level category‑specific features-specifically the amplitude spectrum (AS)-or whether they arise independent of these features. Participants viewed grayscale images of animals and vehicles with either intact or equalized AS, each paired with an "X" or "O." They performed either a category‑relevant task (animal vs. vehicle) or a category‑irrelevant task ("X" vs. "O"). Task dema

Children require more evidence to revise beliefs under gradual perceptual change.

Rafetseder et al. (2021) were the first to demonstrate that children have difficulty revising their beliefs when objects morphed from one object (e.g. a rabbit) into another (e.g. a duck). Children aged four to eight reported the second object significantly later than adults. This is surprising, because both children and adults were presented with the same initial information ("it is a rabbit") and were exposed to the same contradictory visual evidence. We conducted three experiments to replicate the results and to and explore reasons for children's delayed belief revision. In Experiment 1 (N

Evidence for abstract spatial concept learning in young animals.

Encoding abstract spatial relations (above-below, left-right, inside-outside) is essential for navigation and object recognition. The ability to form abstract categories is particularly advantageous for young animals, as it supports efficient environmental encoding during development. However, research has largely focused on adult animals, with limited data on human infants and no evidence on young non-human animals. To investigate the emergence of abstract category learning and its underlying mechanisms in minimally experienced animals, we tested day-old domestic chicks (Gallus gallus). Durin

Digital social prescribing: a concept analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Digital Social Prescribing (DSP) represents an innovative paradigm that integrates digital technologies into traditional social prescribing frameworks to address the social determinants of health (SDOH). However, persistent conceptual inconsistencies and a paucity of theoretical clarity have constrained its systematic application and evaluation within public health and nursing practices. AIMS: This study aims to clarify the definition of digital social prescribing, distinguish it from traditional social prescribing, and identify its core characteristics through a systematic conc

The Function of Posterior Middle Temporal Gyrus in Conceptual Expansion.

Conceptual expansion, referred to as the expansion of existing conceptual structures and the generation of new concepts, is a key cognitive component of creative ideation in human beings. However, the specific brain regions associated with the process of conceptual expansion remain unclear, particularly in the field of divergent thinking. In the present study, we examined neural correlates of conceptual expansion in the alternate uses task (AUT). Specifically, during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning, participants were asked to process a set of creative AUT ideas, each cons

Developing Concepts of Authenticity: Insights From Parents' and Children's Conversations About Historical Significance.

The present study investigated children's understanding that an object's history may increase its significance, an appreciation that underpins the concept of historical authenticity (i.e., the idea that an item's history determines its true identity, beyond its functional or material qualities, leading people to value real items over copies or fakes). We examined the development of historical significance through the lens of parent-child conversations, and children's performance on an authenticity assessment. The final sample was American, 79.2% monoracial White, and mid-high socio-economic st

Brief category learning distorts perceptual space for complex scenes.

The formation of categories is known to distort perceptual space: representations are pushed away from category boundaries and pulled toward categorical prototypes. This phenomenon has been studied with artificially constructed objects, whose feature dimensions are easily defined and manipulated. How such category-induced perceptual distortions arise for complex, real-world scenes, however, remains largely unknown due to the technical challenge of measuring and controlling scene features. We address this question by generating realistic scene images from a high-dimensional continuous space usi

Should Catatonia Be Conceptualized as a Pathological Response to Trauma?

Although catatonia is related to several medical conditions, catatonia as a response to trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is less clear. The aim of this review is to explore the small emerging body of preliminary evidence that suggests a possible correlation between psychological trauma and catatonia. Initial data suggests a correlation between episodes of intense fear associated with trauma and PTSD and some forms of catatonic responses. Although this relationship is still speculative to be causative, it can have important implications if confirmed. This is especially salient wh

Age-of-acquisition effects in pure alexia.

Pure alexia is an acquired reading disorder in which previously literate adults adopt a letter-by-letter processing strategy. Though these individuals display impaired reading, research shows that they are still able to use certain lexical information in order to facilitate visual word processing. The current experiment investigates the role that a word's age of acquisition (AoA) plays in the reading processes of an individual with pure alexia (G.J.) when other lexical variables have been controlled. Results from a sentence reading task in which eye movement patterns were recorded indicated th

Can we use statins to prevent stroke in Fabry disease?

UNLABELLED: Fabry disease is a rare, X-linked lysosomal storage disease caused by an inborn deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A, which results in the progressive accumulation of globotriaosylceramide and other neutral glycolipids in a range of cells and tissues. In association with the renal and cardiac insufficiency, cerebrovascular complications can result in the death of the patients. Several mechanisms causing vascular damage that leads to the development of deep-white matter lesions have been described. Recent clinical trials strongly suggest that statins protect against stroke by neuropr

Do infants possess an evolved spider-detection mechanism?

Previous studies with various non-human animals have revealed that they possess an evolved predator recognition mechanism that specifies the appearance of recurring threats. We used the preferential looking and habituation paradigms in three experiments to investigate whether 5-month-old human infants have a perceptual template for spiders that generalizes to real-world images of spiders. A fourth experiment assessed whether 5-month-olds have a perceptual template for a non-threatening biological stimulus (i.e., a flower). The results supported the hypothesis that humans, like other species, m

Prospective object search in dogs: mixed evidence for knowledge of What and Where.

We investigated whether two dogs that had been specially trained to retrieve objects by their names were able to integrate information about the identity (What) as well as the location (Where) of those objects so that they could plan their search accordingly. In a first study, two sets of objects were placed in two separate rooms and subjects were asked to retrieve the objects, one after the other. Both dogs remembered the identity of the objects as they reliably retrieved the correct objects. One of the dogs was also able to integrate information about the object's location as he chose the co

On a practitioner's need of further development of Wechsler scales. Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2).

Wechsler's intelligence test-batteries are still popular yet suffer from psychometric shortcomings and lack a certain content improvement and enlargement. In this paper a new approach will be presented that suits traditional Wechsler-testing. The approach in question is the Adaptive Intelligence Diagnosticum (AID 2; Kubinger & Wurst, 2000). Due to it's "branched testing" design, AID 2 works out to be more economical and in this regard also offers other advantages, such as parallel tests and short forms. AID 2 offers a method of survey for identifying specific developmental disorders or learnin
